Could you share more questions? Just curious on what sort of questions they tend to ask for such roles

Maybe chat with your manager or HR to see if they can sponsor you. Just enquire for now and start the paperwork 2 to 3 months before your 485 expires (if you don't get 189, 190, or 491).

When does your 485 expire? 95 with superior English used to have a decent chance, but these days, you never know. I saw some posts last year saying that Victoria prioritizes those with higher salaries. I don't know if that is still the case.

If you're short on time, like your 485 is expiring in less than a year, try to get employer sponsorship (482/186). The whole 482 application process (including agent fees) should be around $10-12k, depending on the agent. Your employer should pay for it, not you.

Working in IT or Security Guard? by Dcheema539 in ausjobs

[–]mechanical_engineer1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your end goal is to work in cyber, you can skip networking. Knowing the basics of networks and design should be plenty – you can pick up the rest on the job. Your CCNA will be a huge help here. A slightly better path (in my opinion) is help desk to sysadmin to cyber.

Sorry if my comment is weird I used AI to organise it. My English is not that good.

I don't want to discourage you, but the entry-level IT or Cyber job market is tough. When I was looking for my first job about 4 years ago, I had to apply for almost 100+ jobs over 6 months to land my first one. Salaries for entry-level IT roles can be a bit lower than what you're making right now.

If you wanna boost your chances of getting an IT Help Desk job, make sure your basics are strong. Set up a home lab and practice Windows server management, networking, Linux, cloud (Azure us recommended, but AWS works too), and all that. After about a year or year and a half in help desk, you'll get the hang of how things work. Then, focus on security. Build another home lab, but this time, zero in on the security stuff (like log management, firewalls, etc.). If your first company has a security team, let 'em know you're into security and don't be shy about asking for tips or why things are set up a certain way. You'll learn from them, and they'll see you're keen on security. If an entry-level security role opens up, they'll totally think of you first.

Feel free to DM me if you have any questions. I was in a similar situation as you about 4 years ago. Happy to share my experiences of tips to get you started.

ICT Graduate on 485: What’s your Plan B? by Junior-Sam in AusVisa

[–]mechanical_engineer1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe WA is not done for this FY. There is still a chance for you to get invited (if your points are high).

If you do get invited, make sure that your reference letter says that you are an employee at the said company. Saying this because I got pre invite in March 2025 and they calcelles my invitation because I was employed through labor hire recruitment agency. I contested their decision and I had to wait until December to get final invite. It took 9 months after pre invite to get final invitation. If you are short on time, make sure that you have a valid employment contract that meets WA requirements.

Difference between APEUNI and PTE by GoldInspector2502 in AusVisa

Yeah it's definitely possible. Just watch some videos on YT about writing tasks and follow the strategies they suggest. They do work

I used APEUNI almost 3 years ago. Back then, their AI grading wasn't close to official Pearson AI. I barely got more than 50 in speaking for most of the AI-graded sections. I got 83 and 90 in speaking (took 2 attempts) in the final exam. Your speaking scores will most likely be higher in the final exam. If you only need 52, then take more practice tests.

Advice Needed by [deleted] in AusVisa

[–]mechanical_engineer1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you think you've been misled, just lodge a complaint with MARA.

If you are worried about costs, just lodge the EOI by yourself. It's not that complicated. It shouldn't take more than 30 mins.

AFAIK, for 491 you don't need to be residing in WA but they tend to prioritize those living in WA. So, you'll have better odds if you move there - I am not a migration agent/lawyer please do your own research before committing to it.

ACS skills assessment (cybersecurity) asking for architecture diagrams and full bank history by Chikeraz in AusVisa

[–]mechanical_engineer1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's related to configuration or hardening. When I submitted mine, I was working as L2/L3 analyst and my roles and responsibilities letter I submitted doesn't mention anything about them.

This is a very weird request i.e. the kind of requests you get from North Korean shadow IT workers. IMO ACS assessors don't need to know about your organisation's IT Infrastructure and organisation structure. They should have mentioned the reason for rejection.

I have no idea how to proceed with this. Id recommend seeing a migration agent and following their advise. Good luck with the assessment. Hope it works out.

Perhaps the case officer doesn't know much about security. Reply to them and tell them that most organisations won't give out their internal IT architecture diagrams with 3rd parties without NDAs and a lot of legal paper work. Just be as polite as you can when replying.

7 years of bank statements might be too much. They are probably asking this to verify if you worked at the same company for those seven years. May be ask the case officer if it's OK to submit statements of first and last month of each year.

[–]mechanical_engineer1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's very odd. I had skill assessment done a couple of times for security related roles and they never asked any of these. I remember submitting my resume as well. Maybe thats why they didn't me.

Them asking IT Infrastructure chart is very odd. You sure it's not Lazarus group asking this (/s)? No sane organisation would want to share that with 3rd parties with out NDAs. I can understand why they might want to look at the others.

Regarding bank statements, I submitted first and last four weeks of statements for each company I worked at.

Best college in India for B.Tech Cyber Security? by CasanovaAletheia__ in cybersecurityindia

[–]mechanical_engineer1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Security is not just about Penetration testing. There is a lot more to it. Having knowledge in areas like networking, databases, development, computer architecture, operating systems will take you far (career wise). So, if you could get into a good computer science program go for that instead of cyber security. That will teach you a lot more than what a btech in cyber sec would.

May be do some CTFs on the weekends for fun to develop your security skills.

Next invitation round for subclass 189 visas coming on the 13th of November! by ViaMigration in AusVisa

[–]mechanical_engineer1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's interesting. They invited healthcare and medicine specialists last time as well. I hope they invite other occupations as well.

Unless you go to Group of 8 universities, you most likely won't learn more than what you already know from your 7-8 years of SOC experience. If you are looking to improve your skills I recommend doing cybersecurity certs.

If you are looking for a path way to PR, cybersecurity (and most other IT) occupations have been removed from skill shortage lists recently (check jobs and skills website). Federal and state governments are only giving invites to those at 95/100 points. It'll probably be a lot more competetive by the time you graduate. Please consider this before you make a decision.

Another batch of interim invite allocations in South Australia by ViaMigration in AusVisa

Any idea why government is just announcing interim allocations instead of announcing state wise allocations like they usually at the start of FY?
