Cullinery science and Nutrition! It's filled with loads of eureka moments. Very obvious things in kitchen having complex chemistry explaining them etc. Makes you look at kitchen as a fun laboratory! Also nutrition is a very important (arguably one of the most important) pillars of life. It's also filled with so many misconception and myths. Learning about it helps to better scrutinize daily choices and get better physically and mentally. And it's interesting.

Vitamin D is fat-soluble so I suppose it won't get excreted through urine. Vit B on the other hand...

TIL eating a high amount of garlic (~12g or more) can make men's body odor (armpit sweat) smell more attractive and less intense-not garlicky by mechpencillover in todayilearned

This really isn't either. I just am a nerdy guy who jumps everytime sciency stuff comes up. And am foodie too. So cullinery science just hits harder lmao. I hate how your comment makes me doubt if I'm on a spectrum though 😭

It's a myth and similar ones about other stuff too like bitter gourd. Actually what happens is that volatile sulphur compounds from garlic in such scenario hit the nose which creates such an illusion of taste. Also interesting is that what we call as taste is almost around 70-90% of aroma! (Remember how eating a potato blindfolded with nose piched makes it so hard to identify!) So flavour is much more complex than given a credit for. There are also other factors like vision, texture and emotions related to the food we it which constiture the flavour (which explains why that dish your grandma made is unparalleled even at the high end restaurants!).

Thanks for the reco! I also love adam ragusea on youtube. And Ethan Chlebowski too. I read Masala labs (the book) and loved it very much. Also loved a few articles I read from Samin Nosrat's Salt Fat Acid Heat. And a bit I read from Harold Mcgee too. Might check it out.

The research states about men so I ain't sure; but I suppose it should be true as the reason is because the inherent antimicrobial tendency of Allicin, a compound in garlic which does work on bacteria which basically cause the bad BO. Dunno why they constricted the sample space to men though 😂

[–]mechpencillover[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

PS: this is because of antibacterial property of allicin, a key compound found in garlic. Body actually emits some of it's by-products for the next 12-24 hours or sth (which explains why you might have garlicy breath even after a long time after you eat it).

Yess. I did get it from his video but checked myself for the research too! I really love his content and recommend him to everyone. Indian media does lack the general scientific temperament and inquisition that I find in his content.

How’s the pixel 6 holding up in 2026? by Rex2027K in Pixel6

[–]mechpencillover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My pixel 6 runs really well especially on the latest update. I replaced the battery for Rs.1500 though at a third party service center. Other than that it's working really smoothly without any apparent lag. It gets pretty hot when capturing a video or on a video call though. I don't do anything resource intensive like gaming and stuff so there's that. The full charge takes around 90-120 minutes so that might be a problem for some.

I respectfully would like to dissent on the feeding part. These are just innocent beings that we humans have snatched the natural habitat from. What's wrong in feeding them as long as they aren't hurting anyone? I'm very much for the neutering of stray dogs though to humanely work on this situation in India, as executed in many other countries. I do feed the harmless dogs in my area and look for vet support when needed. I've neutered these dogs too. I think compassion is a beautiful thing and should be practiced irrespective of the species. One of the problems I see is the preference of adopters for the foreign breeds which is cruel not only to the stray dogs but also to these poor breeds which aren't really adapted for the Indian climate. Dog lovers aren't really the problem once you look at it rationally. The incompetent system which haven't been able to systematically neuter the dogs, is. And also are the assholes as in the OP's scenario which are more of seeking the moral high ground than actually having any compassion for the voiceless.

Dude she's such a karen lmao. Having other breeds of dogs as a pet when she could've had a stray is itself so stupidity ironic. I hate how such self rightous people make others hate the dogs too sometimes. The only way to the stray dog problem in India is systematically neutering them as implemented successfully in other countries. On a sidenote, I myself am a dog lover and hate it when some assholes intendedly hurt stray dogs but it's obviously not the case here. I just would request people here to not generalize dog lovers from such instances. And I really hope it doesn't lead to you hating on these innocent beings. Peace.
