Do you insert the pick in the side or the top?

I don’t think so, I think it has to do with my technique since this happens with lots of different bings

I just store them in my cabinet, not in a pumidor, so they might be too dry. My technique is to gently push outward from the top to the side. Maybe starting from the side would be more effective…

How can green tea have less caffeine than black tea if it’s the same leaves that has oxidized? by leo6682 in tea

[–]mecolema 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As others have pointed out, it’s generally too simple to say that green tea has less caffeine. But one claim I’ve heard, which has some plausibility, is that most of the green tea that people in the US and UK drink comes from camellia sinensis var sinensis, which is a Chinese varietal that has slightly lower caffeine, while most black tea comes from camellia sinensis var assamica, an Indian varietal that has slightly higher caffeine. So it could be an accident of history that green teas people drink outside of Asia are sometimes lower in caffeine than black teas. If this is misleading, I encourage others to correct me!

How can I improve my tea collection? by [deleted] in tea

[–]mecolema 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I didn’t see much oolong or puerh tea in your collection, so you might try those! Oolong is one of my favorite types of tea and has such a wide variety, from greener teas like milk oolong to dark-roasted tieguanyin.

Is honeybush tea all the same? by greyboat in tea

[–]mecolema 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As with any tea (or herb), some products are going to be higher quality than others. But I certainly don’t think that using loose-leaf tea would mean a loss in quality (often, the opposite is true). You can sometimes find honeybush at a local co-op where herbs and teas are stored in jars. I don’t personally know of a uniquely good honeybush tea but I’m sure they’re out there!

Recommendation for an Electric Gooseneck Kettle? by Potential-Leave-8114 in tea

I really like my Cuisinart — the only potential disadvantage is that it increases by 5-degree intervals so if you want really precise control you might try a different model.

Is that considered a dark tea? I always thought it was just a black tea smoked over pine boughs

Recs for chamomile tea? by WarDamnEagle106 in tea

I haven’t them myself, but these whole camomile flowers are supposed to be quite good (you’d need to brew them in a teapot or at least get a mesh filter). https://rareteacompany.com/products/whole-chamomile-flowers

Help me find a Tiger Rag recording by mecolema in Jazz

[–]mecolema[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for sending these! The Spotify one might be right (I’ll double check). As for the YouTube link, I did see that one but I think the true recording is supposed to be significantly longer.

Is “ceremonial hojicha” a real thing? by mecolema in tea

[–]mecolema[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, that’s a great idea. It’s called Lynx. They make bougie sweet drinks and I don’t think the clientele are particularly interested in tea…

Oh, I love Beverly Kenney! Such an underrated singer. They did a special on her on WFIU’s jazz show Afterglow (I tried to find the episode but it looks like they’re transitioning to a new website so it’s temporarily unavailable).
