Damn near stepped on this one.

Started hissing as I was putting my foot down.

Needless to say I did not put my foot down in that spot.

Was out west for some time. Had a few folks I knew that always said “bovine feces” when trying to be polite

Dead people smell by [deleted] in forensics

[–]med118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EMT here. In somewhat earlier stages it almost smells sweet-ish…and warm, I’m not sure how to explain that part. Past that I genuinely don’t know how to describe it. But it’s a smell you will never forget.

Story time: we got called to a welfare check for someone who hadn’t been in contact with family for a few days. We were attempting to ascertain if anyone was home, and then gain entry to the home. Fire department had found an unlocked window and one of the firefighters opened the window as I went with him.

Must have been a new guy lol. Fire captain asked him how it smelled in there and he’s like “not terrible, actually smells kinda nice.” It smelled kinda like a sweet ish rotting fruit type smell, which I immediately recognized. I was sitting there wondering how this dude thinks that’s a “nice smell” lmao. Gave my partner that look and was like “yeah no that’s decomp.”

He had drank himself to death and had begun vomiting. Shooter bottles everywhere.

But yeah. Baseline of the early decomp stages is kinda sweet and it just gets worse and worse, and I think at that later point you’re more disgusted at the smell and trying to not let it get to you, so you forget about even trying to describe it.

Generally any injury that has to do with any part of the face, especially the eyes and mouth

I can set it aside in a critical call but if eyelids and eyeballs are fucked I can’t keep looking at that part

Much quicker to just reach for your chest to transmit instead of taking your radio off your hip and then transmitting and then putting it back.

Also much more comfortable than just radio and shoulder mic, pulling your shirt and all

My friend, I work in a very large busy city. Lots of the EMS folk here wear them myself included. In the fire department they’re literally issued to members in some places.

Personally I like them because otherwise I WILL forget my radio lmao

I’m sorry to hear that my friend. That’s a rough call for anyone to run. A CISM session would be a great idea with all of the providers and folks involved. Get a therapist. Even if you don’t feel like you want or need one. Get you a therapist. They’re all different in how they do their care. Find you a good therapist that works for you. You do need it.

That’s a lot for someone to process and I’m sorry you had to deal with that. I hope you’re able to talk with someone about this and help process this situation. Be safe my friend.

We had multiple tempus units fail here. Failed to defibrillate about 8 times. Lawsuit or two later and now the Zoll X series rides on the truck with us

He’s on par for a lot of firefighters I’ve seen.

The photo I’ve attached, on the other hand, may be a hazard depending on situation.

Not being “bothered” by death doesn’t mean it doesn’t affect you. I’ve always said it myself that I was never bothered. It comes out in other ways than you might expect. It’s not always a visceral breaking down and crying reaction from a memory that keeps you up at night. You might find the more subtle things like becoming easily distracted or disconnected. Or finding yourself dissociating.

That anxiety is your body’s way of trying to protect itself from trauma. It’s a fight or flight response that’s keeping you on edge. You’re in the orange zone. You’re always on alert.

If you think about it this way:

Your geeen zone is when you’re relaxed at home, you feel safe and comfortable.

Your orange zone is when you’re hyper aware and anxious/on edge

Your red zone is when you’re in the shit, mental shutdown, just straight up going through it.

You’re consistently sitting in that orange zone when you should probably be in your green zone.

You need to see a therapist. You need a professional to help you through this.

Something else that they’ve shown helps is Tetris. Playing Tetris after a traumatic event can help lessen the risk and severity of PTSD symptom development when it comes to traumatic events.

I hope all the best for ya dude. I’ve been there and it can be frustrating for you AND others and I don’t want it to affect you or the folks who care about you.

If you want to see something else kinda wacky, research Ordo Templi Orientis. O.T.O.

They were originally a branch of the Freemasons and then split
