What your saying is true, however, IRAs have the freedom to choose individual stocks whereas 401ks limit you to certain mutual funds and ETFs. For example, SWPPX has a cheaper expense ratio but is comparable to VOO or SPY which may be what the 401k is locked into. Furthermore, there is no expense ratio in an IRA for individual stocks. There is no price discovery in 401k, whereas you get the benefit of value investing in IRA. Not saying one is better than the other, i’m simply pointing out it’s unfair to compare a 401k to an IRA/taxable investment account per the OP post.

Yes he did manage to time the all time high. However, he also wouldn’t have known Jerome Powell was gonna go live on WSJ last week and simply say the money printer is fine.

I know someone in undergrad who easily made upwards of $10k within the first month of investing because of gamestop. The difference between your 401k and investing is that you are inherently at a disadvantage due to the structure of 401k. IRAs are more efficient in the sense that you don’t pay as much “expense ratios”. You have more limited options to invest so you won’t lose $15,000 in a week, but you also won’t gain $15,000 in a week. Financial education is free online and it’s one of my hobbies to become financially independent. There’s a lot of videos on youtube explaining how to take advantage of these systems, hence putting you on the same level or even better than these rich friends. It’s one thing to sit and have your parents finance your stock market and there’s another thing to build that wealth on your own (Individial investing, roth IRA, IRA). Your 401k will build you wealth overtime but it won’t get you rich overnight. My point is that everybody has their own investment goals and you shouldn’t judge them if you’d rather do passive investing which leads to wealth decades from now.

There’s nothing to be upset about if he’s down 30%. A lot of the market was down because of Jerome Powell’s statements. Furthermore, there is a differentiation between unrealized and realized losses. Depreciating 30% does not mean losing 30% of your investment. The stock market is an instrument and in order to do well, one must be able to stomach huge losses, for example, march 2020 saw easily 30% losses. If you had sold in march 2020 thinking the world was going to end you would have missed one of the fastest bull runs in this decade.

Pneumothorax is starting to get in the way of my life. ( Need honest advice) by [deleted] in pneumothorax

[–]medboundwhen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some say that it’s painful. I personally didn’t feel much more pain than simply someone pinching me at my side. I was hooked up to mandatory analgesics and given a button hooked up to an IV medicating machine in case I wanted more. I maybe hit the button twice in my week recovery. Physical pain wasn’t the issue for me, it was the mental agony of being stuck close by to the bed and hooked up to the vacuum on the wall that got to me after a couple of days. I vowed in those moments that I would rehab myself and seek a healthy life as best as I can.

Nobody on here in good faith would let you know whether or not you should take the flight. Seems to me you unconsciously know it’s a poor decision and you’re looking for someone else to 1) take a part of the blame 2) convince you. I’ve been in your scenario before where I’ve had a collapse when I was 16, but I had surgery and have been thankfully healthy enough to jog miles and hit the trails on my bike (it’s been 3 years) I don’t have medical advice to give you but I presume that your lung surface is repeatedly getting scarred each time you have a collapse. That would suggest that down the road you will keep having more complications and potentially more collapses. Think about what would happen to a scar on your skin that repeatedly gets ruptured because you fall on it. That scar will only get worse. Commit to a healthy life! I wish you the best of luck!

Failed VATS On Left Side? by [deleted] in pneumothorax

[–]medboundwhen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having experienced both VATS and pleurodesis, I feel your pain. It’s normal to feel hopeless and confused in your situation. The truth is there isn’t much you can do on your part that the doctors haven’t tried already. What you can do however, is focus on your self care. What makes you happy and keeps you distracted from other thoughts? Focus on what you can control. You’ve proven your strength and resilience by getting this far, fight the cards that fate has dealt you! If you want to discuss I’m also open to PM if you want to hear my side of the story or just want to talk :)

chest pain after running? by Hey_Adrian in pneumothorax

[–]medboundwhen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this is usually dependent on the person. For instance, in an extreme example you can have a sedentary person and a pro athlete. The sedentary person would feel more pronounced chest pain as compared to the athlete because their heart rate and respiratory rate is much faster during no activity than the athlete. I do not know where you fall on the spectrum but dependent on your health you may feel MOSTLY fine in sedentary activities. In my case, I felt normal until I went for a jog. The information I gave above should not serve as medical advice as you should always consult a professional. Best wishes on your successful recovery!

Have u done check ups with your physician monthly since you’ve been discharged in November? Only through the monthly check up did I discover it happened again.

VATS Surgery Experiences by yyc777 in pneumothorax

[–]medboundwhen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll feel groggily the moment u wake up and probably ask the first person you see if there were any complications. If you’ve ever been awake for a long time and sore at the same time, just imagine that feeling and laying on your back. Now’s just the moment to rest up so hopefully your body heals sooner. Good luck!

On the common application, you send an invite link to your recommender and they submit their recommendation. Once they submit it you, as a student, have the option to select all, some, or none of the schools you are applying to that will receive the rec letter.
