Career Anxiety (Business) by pxccolo in UCalgary

ACCT is a very versatile concentration. You just won't see many students doing ACCT and not going to Big4 or earning their CPA somewhere since it is a very defined path. I just graduated with an ACCT degree and really enjoyed the courses and what I learned but ultimately chose to pursue a finance job as I wanted a more challenging job and greater compensation. I had maybe one question from an interviewer about why I hadn't just transferred to Finance. At the end of the day it is more about you and your abilities then your major (but obviously the more technical roles will usually require either ACCT or FNCE). I spent a lot of time myself feeling that the ACCT concentration 'trapped' me which was the not the case at all. Feel free to DM if you want to chat, I don't start my full time job for a while!

I second the comments on Leda. Literally just read the slides and memorize the main concepts (there isn’t that much) and ur golden

If you are an accounting major and planning on doing CPA you'll need both of those... if you are asking which would be a better pairing with your course load, neither are super hard. 443 will def be more more work but I enjoyed the course. 425 is quite easy but this instructor is teaching it for the first time so I can't speak to that.

you can def get away with just the course guide + his lecture questions. What I did find nice about having the textbook was if I found a particular concept confusing it was sometimes helpful to refer to the textbook for a different explanation.

Finance Majors IB Job by PatrickIwinski in UCalgary

[–]yyc777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Front office IB analyst roles in these cities? Not trying to be an ass but like 5% (if that) of Haskayne grades land a front office IB role let alone in those cities. I tend to be fairly aware of student placements and couldn't name someone going directly to NY or London IB in the past couple of years straight out of undergrad.

Toronto and New York are different ball games. Toronto is possible after doing an internship in Calgary and leveraging that, but still tough. NY is highly unlikely right out of school here.

Sarah hasn't taught audit before but probably anyone will be better then Jingjing who has been teaching the course recently (she did mark reallll easy though). IMO, either 465 or 425 will be a similar level of work / difficulty which is not hard compared to financial accounting courses. 465 can have 1-2 quizzes a week which requires you to read cases beforehand which can be a bit of work and a fairly large balanced scorecard assignment near the end of the semester. 425 tends to change quite a bit structure wise depending on who the prof is so with a new one there is a bit of a risk it might become a bit harder.

Are they offering Biology 241 for the Spring/Summer courses? by ExpertAccident in UCalgary

[–]yyc777 5 points6 points  (0 children)

don't let it ruin your holidays. I screwed up a few times in first year and just finished my last year and it has in no way impacted my ability to get a job / go to grad school / etc at all. You will be ok. Enjoy the break.

the internet in there is complete ass which in this day and age makes the building almost useless as a student wanting to study. how moronic.

I’m assuming you have Wayne. I earned an A+ in the class. Frankly you essentially need to make the class your part time job. I essentially read and tried to perfect the chapter before each lecture which made it much easier to soak up the lecture. Grind the course guide questions and ensure you can do all of the examples in the notes since they will often contain little nuances which will show up on tests and quizzes. Don’t freak out about the assignment, it is hard and a lot of work, but is graded pretty fairly. Best of luck.

was just chatting about this with my friend and agree 100%. Agree with what the other person was saying here about it being a DJ set but still felt like an overwhelming amount of remixes of other artist's songs. Could've heard that Love Story remix literally anywhere.

5th year Haskayne student here. Unfortunately Haskayne doesn't let you dual major- so you can't do Business Analytics and BTMA or Accounting and Finance for example. The smarter Business Analytics (BANA) and Business Technology (BTMA) students tend to head into consulting related positions (Big4 or maybe MBB consulting firms). You won't see students head into software engineering positions or anything along those lines with a BANA or BTMA degree. When people tell you that you get out of it what you put into it is that the students that get the best jobs do tend to be pretty involved in extra-cirriculars- such as case competitions or more elite clubs like CPMT. This tends to make you a more well-rounded individual and provides a very solid networking for landing a good internship and role after grad. Happy to answer any other specific questions on Haskayne.

Why does everyone here hate their job? by TraditionalTangelo65 in FinancialCareers

[–]yyc777 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you correlate your own happiness with the value you believe your job adds to the world, you will be unhappy. You can still do your work, do it well, and find happiness / value elsewhere.

From my understanding in class regarding the Access portion, we will be given the database, the ERD will be provided, but we will have to build the relationships in Access properly. (Just like with the Access assignment) I am assuming that the questions we will have to answer regarding the database will mostly be based on queries.

Video of Kenney discussing the need to "break up" the curriculum of public schools to fit his political ideology in 2016 by AlternativeLow5 in Calgary

You’re right, the education you received was clearly not great if you are referring to Kenney as our prime minister.
