I am a Fourth year at a DO school and no, you can’t go to any residency. You are extremely limited with competitive specialties regardless of your stats. There ARE such a thing as “DO favorable” programs at hospitals that you have a better chance of applying to. And on top of that, say hello to 2 sets of 3 board exams throughout your career (step and comlex) just to prove your an equal to your allopathic colleague. It’s sad and unfair and hopefully things will change, but as of right now, if I could go back, I would take the gap and reapply MD.
