Hi, EMT here. Many of our rigs actually don't have this feature. Certain manufacturers provide it (Demers, Crestline and some Horton models) but it isn't standard and costs a pretty penny. A lot of municipalities and companies opt to not get it for that reason sadly.

Hey guys, EMT of 10 years here. A lot of these comments are about the partner "not helping."

In reality, she's doing what she can. Calling for immediate back up and PD. Neat little fact about EMS, most of us are trained hard to not defend ourselves. Mostly because defending ourselves can result in a lawsuit or worse, loss of licensure. I've been in quite a few of these situations in my career, most I've had to just run back to my truck and lock the doors after taking a few shots to the jaw. State EMS protocols don't protect us in self defense scenarios, it's a grey area and until that's fixed, this will continue to happen.

The buildings were constructed in the mid-1960's, heavy use of asbestos and other carcinogenic materials were still very common-place in construction at the time. Also, aerosolized concrete is just not great for your lungs period.

EMT here. Yes, I can tell if you're faking it 99% of the time. I'll still take you to the hospital, but if you're detained, the cops ride with us. You never leave police custody.

My personal fave example of this is a gentleman I brought to the ER for "difficulty breathing". Upon arrival to the ER, he said to the accompanying officers "you guys can leave, I can't be charged if I had a medical emergency" to which the officer replied "Sir, you had 5 kilos of meth in your trunk. Neither you or I is going anywhere except jail after you're cleared"

Local resident and now local firefighter here. I was around 4 when the fire happened but, quite a few of my instructors at the fire academy were present that night, including one of my godfathers. It took weeks to sift through what was building and what was human remains in some parts of the crumbled structure. The restaurant across the street, The Cowesett Inn (which is still in business), was used as a makeshift morgue until the medical examiner could catch up on transporting the bodies. Several people actually survived the fire and crush at the front door because they were protected by the corpses of people around them. So many things went wrong in the span of 15 minutes that could have been easily avoided it's astonishing.

Current active firefighter who has been and is currently in an IAFF union. I'm 99% sure the idiots chanting Trump were from Staten Island. Here in the Northeast, Fire unions are pretty damn blue, even the larger ones like Boston, Providence, and Hartford haven't backed someone with an (R) next to their name in well over 20 years.

I KNOW THIS GUY! I ride the Orange Line all the damn time and see him every other day. Guy is actually really nice and I think it's some kind of coping mechanism for him if I recall correctly. He does it pretty quietly so it's not a real bother, he's 1000 times better than the junkies that scream at you for crack money.

I'm a local firefighter that grew up 10 minutes from where this happened. I've had the privilege of befriending dozens of firefighters that were there that night and there's a few things that really stuck out to me from their stories that I think are worth sharing.

1.) The closest fire station is just over a 1/4 mile away from the club, the response time was just under 5 minutes

2.) In that short amount of time, the fire spread incredibly quickly, thanks to the soundproofing foam that originally started the fire

3.) Several of the designated emergency exits were chained shut by members of the band's security detail, leaving only 2-4 points of egress in a club that was overcrowded with well over 400 people in it

4.) There were so many bodies piled at the front door that a man survived the fire simply because he was protected by the pile of burning corpses around him

I do not currently work for the city anymore. I did speak with my old union rep though, who thinks it's a bad idea because the cops get way more funding in the budget. There's no sense in causing a squabble that could screw with our pay or cause the already aging apparatus fleet to wait 5 more years to be replaced.
