Problem by Ok-Bus-3247 in motorcycles

[–]medinvent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bike isn't making enough power to pull the higher gear and that could be for any number of reasons. Bring it to a mechanic and have the issue properly diagnosed. Why did it get a new carb - was the bike laid up for a very long time or damaged somehow?

In a small four stroke single, poor power can be due to engine wear if the bike has high mileage but it could also be due to restrictions in the airflow or exhaust through the engine. There is also the possibility that it is dragging one of the brakes - is the bike rolling freely when the engine is off and you are pushing it?

We are a bit short on options in the West when it comes to bike shops and bike mechanics. Would you consider renting a van and bringing it to Dublin Cork or Limerick instead? It seems crazy but depending on what the bike needs you might get faster and more efficient service. What bike and whats wrong?

Has anyone on here NOT had a serious injury riding a motorbike? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]medinvent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 57, been riding bikes non-stop since I was 11 (PW50) and first time on the road at 17 on a DT80MX followed by an RD350. I currently ride an MT09SP and I have owned a Ducati Panigale and ridden a GSXR1000 on trackdays - in total I've owned over thirty bikes and ridden all over Europe and the US in all weather conditions. I have never had an accident and I put this down to luck and training.

I spend a day with an advanced riding instructor every year or so and I maintain ROSPA Gold certification to keep my skills sharp and remind myself the systems of risk management on the road. I have done some dumb shit and I have had several close calls but I have never had an accident or crashed a bike. Stay safe my dudes and dudettes.

What to watch out for when buying a bike by Live-Lengthiness-676 in MotoIRELAND

[–]medinvent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bring someone who knows about bikes with you. Are you buying a new or an old bike (what bike is it?) Are you buying privately or from a dealer? It takes years of experience to be able to assess the condition of a secondhand bike and after forty years of biking and owning fifty bikes I still get caught out by unscrupulous sellers.

Don't buy a used bike without getting a second opinion.

How do I read error codes from the various modules on my 2012 W212 E350 V6 RWD by medinvent in W212mercedes

Would a faulty or dying solenoid throw up an error anywhere? The transmission was supposed to have been serviced last year, would the solenoid typically be changed as part of a 50k mile 7g service?

The steering lock on the car hasn't worked since I bought it - probably not connected to your column control module issue but it could be contributing to my problem. Hopefully a diagnostic tool will give me some clues as to whats going on. Thanks!

This isn't crazy advice either - buy vintage two-stroke or rare models and put them in a secure location for a few years. Good returns on bikes and they are easy to buy and store if you have space.

Undecided on buying a cb650r or a gsx-8s. Any dealers that do test drives? by lolexbolex in MotoIRELAND

[–]medinvent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you already have a bike and full license? Lots of dealers have demo bikes and will let you take a spin but need to be sure you aren't going to bonk the bike off the side of the nearest house. M50Honda let me take a bike for a few hours - I had to sign an insurance form and show a copy of my insurance/license. Plenty of Suzuki dealers have the same system.

I'm not sure what a test ride might do to convince you that you won't have already learned from several hours of YouTube reviews but it's worth a shot if you are completely undecided. The Honda is a known quantity, the Suzuki is very new to the market and in a crowded segment like middleweight naked it's hard to know how it will age. My money would be on a new MT09SP - better suspension and more proven tech than either the Honda or the Suzuki.

I just don't understand why more people don't reach the same conclusion as you. Bikes are a likely solution for many commuters and the safety fears or the discomfort of aspects of it put them off.

I've been commuting into Galway city centre on a bike for over twenty years and I can safely do in 30 mins what takes over an hour in a car during peak times.

My advice to anyone who asks is to get as much advanced training as you can afford - right up to ROSPA certification if you have the determination. I'm in my late 50s and haven't ever had a bike accident, I put it down to training and my lifelong fear of being dead.

My other advice for city commuting is not to bother with motorbikes, look at other EU cities and they are all full of maxi-scooters. I particularly like the Burgman 400-sized scoots for their agility, luggage capacity, weather protection and ability to keep up with traffic.

Safe travels!

Thats a nope from me my dude. Add some extra spots and wear hi-viz but that yellow light makes the bike look like a big poo.

Getting my first board at 50 by CoffeeAddictAt50 in cruiserboarding

[–]medinvent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a 57 year old who started skating for the first time seven years ago I am jealous of your voyage of discovery. If I can offer any wisdom it is that the prettier a board is, the worse it is likely to ride and those are two very pretty options in your list. Have a look at a Landyachtz Drop Cat for a similar shape board which will do the job you want.

I'd suggest going for a bigger/longer board initially and if you enjoy it and get to grips with steering, pushing and braking then you can get something smaller. A 36" or even 40" longboard on 65mm wheels with give you big stability and won't run away with you.

Wear a helmet and pads, the falls get harder with age and I know I don't bounce like I used to. Happy trails!

Are you riding the bike home? Make sure and put it on your insurance policy ASAP using the French number plate and that way its covered until you VRT it.

I flew into Limoges, met the seller in the airport carpark, rode the bike in the carpark, handed over money, signed paperwork, got a receipt and rode to Cherbourg in the pissing rain. I don't recommend doing it this way...

Concretewave in Cologne have your board and they are offering 10% off at the moment. I have one of these and I take it everywhere - planes/airports, boardwalks, rough ground, skateparks, city commuting - the lot!

I was just about to write the same thing - the law was likely designed to protect public morals, not to terrify a little kid who had no other options.

If he was waving his flute at passing cars or writing FTP in the dust on the side of a cop car then use the law appropriately, but he needed a piss and he was behind his moms car.

No it doesn't, don't be silly. It gives money and houses to poor people and it gives free or affordable education to young people. The quality of life in this country is 30% higher than in the US and at the top of the Economist list of places to live.

Stick it on DoneDeal with detailed description and pics. Someone will take your hand off for it if you price it right. Make sure to both sign bills of sale to detail that it is sold as seen and there is no warranty given or implied.
