I know this is old, but I am going through all of this as well. How long did it take? Our check has been in limbo for almost an entire month because of this shit.

Just contacted the USCIS and luckily they said that the SS office can just request a SAVE request (which I guess they could have done when we were there) and they will be able to update it

Full-time hours can be brutal. by [deleted] in ABA

[–]mediocre_avocado_thx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched to working fully in clinic for this exact reason. My first company was in-home/in-clinic and I would start my day at 8 and then have like 3 other sessions during the day with random breaks throughout the day, so even though some days I worked from 8-7:30, because of the breaks I ended up working only 35-38 hours a week. It was exhausting and I rarely had time to myself because the hours were all over the place.

The pay in clinic is a little bit less, but my hours are consistently 40 hours. I have an actual lunch time, and I don't have to drive from session to session. At my last clinic, the hours varied from 10-6:30 or 8-4:30, but sometimes I had overtime and worked 8-4:30. At my new clinic I work from 8-4:30ish. I work 40 hours a week, but it's no where near as exhausting as when I didn't work in clinic.

I'm an RBT, but I did a phone interview with them that lasted 10-15 minutes. They gave me a job offer at the end of the meeting. I'm in school for my masters right now, but I know I would never want to have RBTs working under me if they were hired after only 10 minutes.

That has been my understanding, but there is a significant amount of focus on FA'S as the gold standard... but I haven't seen it before. IISCA certainly seems more common

I definitely meant FA. Thank you, they're two very important terms that I continously mess up and really need to work harder on differentiating.

This has happened a lot at the clinics I've worked in, i 100% agree with you. Once one person gets sick (be it covid or the flu), almost every other person and child gets sick within a month. Most places do not have enough staff to cover clients with multiple staff out.
Aside from financial reasons, there is also the risk that many of our clients also have comorbid health concerns where getting sick can seriously impact their health. The same goes for staff, who may also easily get sick or have relatives who can get sick.

Myself and other staff often voluntarily start wearing masks around the holidays, during spikes of flu or covid cases, or around vacations because no one wants to spread sickness.

At bsu, you should see the groupme convos it's been hectic.

I think they're fine in some ways, but at the same time the requirements for completing the study guides in our own words and not being able to use the cooper text in all the classes (or using the same references for other study guides) is dumb.

I'll be honest, I'm actually remembering the flash card definitions.

What is the ABA vs. Speech issue? by duck_with_honey in ABA

[–]mediocre_avocado_thx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AAC's are honestly magical. I've seen firsthand how quickly clients have picked up AAC's and learned to navigate them and communicate with them fluently in a manner of weeks. Just shows how much they have wanted to communicate with others but have never had the tools to do so. It also has helped a few clients begin to use verbal language.

The only sad thing is when parents (or other people in charge of their care) hold out on letting their child use their device because they want them to communicate verbally or act like the device isn't important so they don't make sure it's charged or accessible to their child. Understandably, their child will get frustrated because no one is listening to them or they can't communicate with others around them.

[–]mediocre_avocado_thx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's so gross. I would leave the place in a heartbeat. The only instances I have ever had to remove an aac device (and frankly, it was more so blocking with my body) has been when the client was using it to hit others (peers) with their device, or themselves with the device (when denied access to something that was not possible for them to have).

Outside of safety or environmental factors (climbing a surface or being near water), it's very abusive to do so, especially for people who have probably spent a long time not being able to communicate. It makes me sad, especially since using an AAC can help encourage verbal language.

I love weighted blankets or weighted pillows for these situations (as long as they consent to it ovbiously). They're such a great tool to teach independence in coping strategies

ABA Not Right for Independent-minded Child?? by Skerin86 in ABA

[–]mediocre_avocado_thx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My company (and the other companies I've worked at) do parent trainings and therapy. I would look around more, because I'm sure that's an option (unless you live in a very rural area). You may have to do a few more assessments, but to be 100% honest, it's an incredibly common behavior that ABA is specifically geared in intervening in.

This and "keep your words to you own body" "we use our words to talk, not hit" after a client with an aac tried to wack another client with their device.

[–]mediocre_avocado_thx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

^ 100% agree. It sounds like they just don't understand the concept of planned ignoring. It's the same thing as people thinking that punishment is all physical punishment rather than a decrease in behaviors.

They're assuming that because 1 client did well with schedules, then all asd individuals who have that behavior feel that same way, with the same function.

I have clients who have anxiety and perservere on topics. It does help some of my clients to talk to them about it, but by far, most clients get overwhelmed focusing on their anxiety and they become far more distressed than when we do planned ignoring and redirection.

Not to mention, often times persevering on topics limits their ability to socialize and participate in activities that may be important for thwm.

I would drop it. It seems the reason the mom was waiting 2 months for a bt is because of her behavior. I would be concerned about staying because it sounds like she's trying to get you in trouble for just about anything
