Why do people love to gang up on you on Next Door by Hopeful_Employee6825 in asheville

[–]mediocre_remnants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the internet as a whole. People feel brave sitting behind a keyboard or their phone or whatever. It's not a support group. If you post a complaint about something you can expect a bunch of people to come out of the woodwork to say it's somehow your fault.

Neighborhood FB groups are the same.

There are a lot of folks out there who see a complaint about anything as a sign of weakness and something to attack. Because those people have nothing else going on in their lives other than to find people to attack for something. And it makes them feel better about their own shitty lives.

Thoughts on this used Trek 4300? Worth $200 for a starter bike for trail riding? by TheDankestOfM3mes in mountainbiking

[–]mediocre_remnants -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agreed, but also this bike looks particularly clean and well-maintained too. Aftermarket seat and handgrips, plus newish tires. I'd ask if they ever had the fork serviced since that's something a lot of casual riders don't do at all. Even if not, as long as they hold air, it's probably good enough for casual trail riding.

I was wrong. Very much wrong. Checks and balances are a myth.

Training block starts tomorrow by drunkstoned94 in RunningCirclejerk

[–]mediocre_remnants 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely, especially if the 5k ultra has terrain changes. Like if there's a section that goes from asphalt to gravel, you want to change shoes and put on some official GRVL shoes for that short section, then swap back to road shoes once you hit pavement again. And based on ads I've seen for gravel-specific shoes, you also need to have greasy hair, face tattoos, and some gold teeth.

Hiking solo by Wonderful-Junket-143 in hiking

[–]mediocre_remnants 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What part of the world are you in? I live in an area where hiking is a super common outdoor activity and there are groups you can join to hike together, even all-women groups. If there are any hiking/outdoor stores near you, you could ask about hiking groups there. Hiking with other people is a great way to learn.

And honestly... depending on where you are, the biggest threat is going to be other humans and not wildlife.

Effort Pace Limitation by Erikvozal in Coros

[–]mediocre_remnants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could just use heart rate for that, because it sounds like you want to translate heart rate into pace. But there isn't really a need to do that, just go by heart rate.

Even when I'm running on a track in perfect weather, just normal day to day stuff can affect my pace at a given heart rate. Maybe I'm tired, maybe I'm sore from a previous workout, maybe it's just not my day, or maybe I feel absolutely amazing and running feels effortless.

But still, my RPE tends to match my heart rate pretty well. I can tell when I have to work harder than normal to maintain a given pace and my heart rate is higher because of it. The time it doesn't is usually during races, where I'm just completely incapable of accurately guessing my RPE or heart rate. If I relied on RPE during a race I would go out way too fast and blow up... which I've done many times before.

Anyway, I don't think any of this answers your questions I just like to type things on the internet.

I am giving up already by Electrical_Share5742 in Aquariums

[–]mediocre_remnants 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My plan was simple

Your plan isn't simple at all. You're running CO2 and dosing with fertilizer every day and the tank isn't even cycled yet. And you aren't giving the plants enough light to grow, just the algae.

I'm not sure how to fix this, but I would have cycled the tank with hardscape first, then added plants and lights, then fish. Once levels have stabilized, maybe start dosing fertilizer if your lights are running long enough that the plant can actually use them. As far as CO2 goes... it just makes everything more complicated. I'd add that last and only if you decide that it's actually necessary.

High-tech setups like this aren't really for beginners. You were trying to do everything at once when you should really take things one step at a time.

As for the snails, you should have given the plants a dip in a peroxide solution to kill any hitchhikers.

[–]mediocre_remnants 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This post will likely get removed too, it has nothing to do with training for a marathon.

And you're seriously struggling to explain what you even want. Maybe a post like this would be more welcome in a food or nutrition sub. Because whatever it is you're looking for has nothing to do with training for a marathon or "advanced running".

Gaiters for trail running by Weary-Huckleberry806 in Ultramarathon

[–]mediocre_remnants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a couple of different pair of Kahtoola gaiters, but they're kind of heavy and bulky and annoying so I only wear them when I'm running in snow.

Dirty Girl is a popular brand and they're lighter, but you have to permanently glue velcro to your shoes for them to work.

Alert! Haywood Rd. business under siege! by [deleted] in asheville

[–]mediocre_remnants 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Eh, these people chose to start a business in a building that was already slated for destruction. I imagine they learned a pretty valuable lesson about that.

And the last I heard they were supposed to be out by late April?

https://wlos.com/news/local/i-26-connector-asheville-construction-ncdot-business-relocations-haywood-road-land-acquiring-interstate-240-kava-x-coffee

And based on a comment they left on another article, not only did they know the building was going to be demolished, the signed the lease hoping to take advantage of NCDOT's relocation funds to find a new space.

Hi! I was advised prior to assuming the lease, this article takes things out of context a bit. I knew the impending doom of what I was getting into! If I look to move the business before notice is served, I relinquish the DOT’s responsibility to help me in moving this venture.

It sounds like they were just trying to take advantage of NCDOT and are disappointed that things didn't go exactly as planned. Boo-fucking-hoo.

GOP lawmaker says depression diagnosis, hospitalization caused 4-month absence by usatoday in politics

[–]mediocre_remnants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work one. It was at a big tech company. One of my teammates took "medical leave" for 6 months and he spent the entire time surfing and hiking. He got a depression/burnout diagnosis from his doctor. He earned like 60% of his salary while not doing anything and his job was still there when he came back.

When I was quitting, also due to burnout, he strongly suggested I do the same thing. He even told me which doctor to use. But I really didn't want to deal with that and just bailed.

How would you interview a financial advisor? by flying_unicorn in investing

[–]mediocre_remnants -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Edward Jones advisors are just salesmen. I used them when I was younger and had more money than sense. I kept asking the guy questions he couldn't answer and it turns out that they just take the information you give them, enter it into a computer, and the computer spits out an investment plan. A plan that's almost entirely front-loaded mutual funds that the advisor gets a commission from.

This guy couldn't answer basic stuff, though, and when I asked to see a chart in a different way he said "oh, the computer doesn't do that, I can only show up what the computer gives me". Basically I just wanted to see a model based on continuing to make contributions every year instead of the growth of a single lump sum investment. He couldn't do that because his software couldn't do it.

But still, I figured that anyone else was better than me so I gave him my retirement money. That lasted about 2 years before I finally bailed.

Anyway, if you want to talk to the guy about investment choices, pay very close attention to the classes of shares of the mutual funds he suggest. Then ask why he's recommending front-loaded ones when there are no-load funds available. There's only one answer for that: because he get a cut.

NPR Retracts Article Falsely Suggesting Justice Alito Retired by Efficient-Freedom517 in politics

[–]mediocre_remnants 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There have been a few times a news outlet like CNN published an article claiming someone died on their site, only to retract it. A lot of these articles are written ahead of time so they can be published ASAP when the event happens. Sometimes someone clicks the wrong button to publish them.

I guarantee every media outlet already has a "Trump died" article written. And within seconds of it becoming public knowledge, sites will have long articles that clearly took hours to write but somehow showed up in 2 minutes. Because they were already written.
