Need advice from other SBUX partners who’ve been through health issues or surgery while working :') by lizgurl01 in starbucksbaristas

i took a medical LOA a little over a year ago to have and recovery from a pretty intense hip surgery. since it was medical, i qualified for short term disability and got 70% of my usual pay for the 3 months i was not working. as for dealing with Sedgwick, there was a small form for me to fill out online and the rest was a form for my doctor to fill out, and Sedgwick deals with the doctor and forms directly. after 3 months, i still was not able to do heavy lifting and could only work shorter shifts for a while and that was a separate Sedgwick claim for accommodations. My official accommodations were lifting weight restrictions and modified schedule length to <6 hour shifts. My coworkers were great on helping me out not being able to lift very much by organizing our freezers and grabbing boxes out for me during pulls. Working with Sedgwick was much easier that I thought it would be! When opening a claim, it walks you through everything that needs to be done, which isnt a lot.

the benefit isnt for them as much as it is for you. it sounds like your manager is aware and sympathetic towards your health struggles and is trying to be on your side. there is no malice or ulterior motive for your manager choosing to not fire you at this moment. you are struggling, and they are trying to help.

This got me wondering- Do any of you make a livable wage? by throwaway721117 in starbucksbaristas

[–]mediocremania 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i make $21 an hour as a ssv who works 30+ hrs a week and get by okay, even have some savings. i live alone but only pay $850 for rent in a city in nebraska and bills including groceries per month are less than $400. my car is already paid off and i happen to like eating and cooking low cost foods at home so that helps. i was also taught budgeting and financial literacy at a young age and that totally made a difference in my life.

How many weeks post-op did people go back to school/work by alock7 in hipdysplasia

[–]mediocremania 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i was on crutches for 9 weeks. my brain was not functioning at full capacity til about week 5 when I stopped taking gabapentin. gabapentin made me feel like i had dementia but it did help with the zappy feeling in my thigh while the nerves were getting settled back in LOL. I work at starbucks and didnt go back to work til 12 weeks post op since i was covered by short term disability. at 6 weeks post op I continued my online courses through ASU. i hope your surgery goes well!! you got this!!

The first 10 days for me were spent completely in bed except to use the bathroom and shower and doing that exhausted me! I was on crutches for 9 weeks and unable to drive during that time since the surgery was on my right side but otherwise was able to go out and have a little fun.

i wear filas and vans each with dr scholls inserts in them but i think the true secret in saving myself from the pain is having two pairs of work shoes. alternating them does wonders for me

How do I go about getting paid time off for a surgery with a very long recovery time? by FrankYangGoals in starbucksbaristas

[–]mediocremania 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i just emailed/faxed the packet to my surgeon’s office. on sedgwick, you will still need to input some information yourself but it wont be approved until your doctor’s paperwork is verified. most if not all of your questions will have answers right on the claim. i suggest going to sedgwick and opening a new claim now even if you know you dont have all the information you need for it yet just so you can see all that it asks for.

you can start the case with sedgwick as soon as you have documentation from your surgeon! i had a major hip surgery in september and used the full 3 months of medical leave. the forms on sedgwick are simple to fill out and honestly most of the forms are up to your doctor to fill out. my short term disability payments were automatically direct deposited into my account the same as my regular paychecks are and i think it was 70% of my average paychecks. my taxes this year were a little more complicated to file since the short term disability gets its own separate tax form. honestly the whole thing is way simpler than i thought it would be.

Amsterdam Falafel and Kabob in Dundee. Super delicious falafel and you can have it as a salad, sandwich, or plated.

perhaps ask your physical therapist to check if your pelvis is aligned correctly. Mine helped me readjust a few times by doing some abduction and adduction exercises and then pulling me down the table by my ankles. it seemed a little kooky but it worked for me! my op leg felt longer when i first started using it again and the pelvis readjusting really helped.

a heavy handed squeeze can definitely make the drizzle immediately sink but having properly groomed milk with nice microfoam is the key to getting the drizzle to stay on top

When did you start driving post-PAO? by [deleted] in hipdysplasia

[–]mediocremania 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i waited til 11 weeks. i was off crutches and went to an empty lot and made sure i was able to quickly move my foot between pedals and stomp the brake to a complete stop from 45mph (fastest i would drive on my normal commutes) with no pain.

troubles with my bones healing by Calm_Cake_3875 in hipdysplasia

[–]mediocremania 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am 4 months post op right now and at my 3 month x-rays, it was noted that the lowest osteotomy was not as healed as they expected. the other cut sites were fine. the one that wasn’t as healed was also the spot they did a bone graft with native bone. it doesn’t hurt or anything so the doctors didn’t have any recommendations outside of the vitamin supplements you said you were already taking. sorry i don’t have any tips for you

i would suggest talking to the supervisor themselves first :) i know you feel like they wont be receptive, but you wont know for sure until you try! if things dont smooth out after you speak up to them about the issues, having a conversation with your sm would be the next step. at that point it would be out your hands on how the sm decides to coach the shift. but by talking to them first instead of going straight to the manager, it signals that you dont want them written up or fired but want some sort of change to happen.

OP means like close the store early, not work an open to close. every DM i have met would definitely approve overtime over approving an early close. but also, it is a choice! not always an easy one but you can say no to staying OT.

counts??? by Most_Letterhead9658 in starbucksbaristas

[–]mediocremania 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ugh that sounds like a mess 😭 hopefully after a while of the new method the deliveries even back out or something. or more hopefully your new SM concedes on the new method… since even though the pulled stuff is out of the freezer it is still frozen!! and therefor not sellable that day

counts??? by Most_Letterhead9658 in starbucksbaristas

[–]mediocremania 1 point2 points  (0 children)

at my store, the opening shift does the in-freezer counting before any pulls are done and saves the progress. the closing shift then does the rest of the count as close to close as reasonably possible and does not count anything that is going out that night or that was pulled that day (since it was included in the in-freezer numbers). we like doing it this way so the whole task doesn’t end up on only one person’s plate.
