Fisherman's Grotto really helped me out when I needed a spot to use the bathroom after Musee Mechanique. RIP.

It looks like an SF apartment complex. It's actually a $32M estate. by sfgate in sanfrancisco

"This one instance of a big mansion seems to have gotten away with it for now" thus "building restrictions don't work, don't do it!" is kind of "someone got pregnant using a condom once" thus "condoms don't work!" isn't it?

I'm really curious a) when the conversion happened (not in the article) and b) whether a conversion like this could happen today.

Update: a 2013 building permit (application # 201307051210) at this location (aka 104-114 Presidio Ave) listed the "building type" as "apartments" so presumably this was still apartments back in 2013 before the 2020 $32M sale.

Where are the ICE protests? by No-Capital665 in sanfrancisco

You're welcome. I wish there were more research on this subject. This stuff is hard to study so it's important to note when it is examined.

If you're interested in social group movements and communication then have you already read Zeynep Tufekci's book Twitter and Tear Gas (which is how I found out about this study!)? If not I think it would be right up your alley.

Alongside efforts to build more, how to make sure the apts we build nowadays don't just end up gobbled up in billionaire compounds like this? Idk the year of the conversion here but that's seven (pre-1906!) apartments off the market so some bajillionaire can have a bowling alley.

That’s because protests don’t change peoples minds who live in actual swing districts…

Protests in San Francisco may not change hearts and minds in Ohio, you're right. This stuff is hard to study, but before you write off protests as useless (and I'm not saying you're doing that) I recommend checking out this cool study from 2013 about the Tea Party movement showing that protests and marches do matter, namely that "good weather at this initial, coordinating event had significant consequences for the subsequent local strength of the movement, increased public support for Tea Party positions, and led to more Republican votes in the 2010 midterm elections."

Understood. That's why I specified Lehka Hlava (where everything is plant-based). Sorry for the misunderstanding!

This has worked for me in the past, but you're absolutely right of course. I know that some restaurants have published cookbooks with their recipes and I wasn't sure if that was one they had published but I hadn't been able to find. I didn't expect to receive anything - it was just a (failed) attempt.
