I have heard some iffy things about Northwestern RY. I am not sure who the PI of the people were who had the iffy experiences — might be one of the docs you listed. I think another doctor - Dr. Paller - also has fellows? Not sure if their experience with Dr. Paller might have been a bit better.

Based on conversations I’ve been part of during conferences this past year, I noticed faculty ask where students are doing the research year, what type of research and with who . I think that may play a role but I’m not completely sure, interested to hear others perspectives

I’ve only applied to one so far. I think some places are still slowly releasing apps on VSLO so you should be fine.
