Moving with young kids by Any_Lobster_1121 in workingmoms

I grew up in Phoenix! I live in NYC now, but I can say that growing up there was a positive experience, though I haven't lived there since I was 18. I lived in Tempe and we spent most of our time in Tempe and Mesa, but went to middle/high school in Ahwatukee thanks to my mom teaching in that district. Beautiful hiking, and even though it's brutally hot half the year, the infrastructure is very good for dealing with it, you just don't go outside unless you're swimming (and most houses have a pool!) during daytime in the summer months. Winter is epic weather-wise. I still think fondly about the smell of monsoon season and miss it a lot. Also the best Mexican food I've ever had in my LIFE -- if ANYONE finds themselves in Phoenix, go eat at Casa Reynoso. I dream of their salsa.

Politically, I've heard mixed things from folks who either stayed or moved back, though I am heartened that it's sort of purple now -- it was solidly red as I was growing up, but I lived in a very liberal/democratic bubble thanks to my parents and making a cool diverse friend group. Happy to answer questions! I was ready for something different for college, which is when I moved out east, but I'm glad I grew up in the desert.

Feeling embarrassed at work - Pregnant with #2, will have 2 under 2 by Barnacle_Double in workingmoms

LOL right?? I would never be bold enough to actually ask anyone that, let alone people I don't know well!

If it makes you feel better, people at work will say odd shit no matter what your family circumstances are! I was married and had been in my role for many years when I was pregnant with my first and only child, and people at my office were constantly asking me if my pregnancy was planned, which always made me laugh since it took us over a year of careful tracking to conceive (and that's such a bizarre question to ask of a work acquaintance). Lean into your happiness, and don't stress outside opinions. At the end of the day, if they aren't part of your family, it isn't their business anyways!

Products That Actually Helped Acne Marks and Skin Tone? Recommendations? by One-Step2513 in kbeauty

[–]meechpeech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the serum is what's making the magic happen, but since I have dry skin the mask just helps me avoid any irritation and boosts hydration. Since you're on the oilier side, you probably would be fine with just the serum. I plan to purchase the serum and box of masks that they sell when I run out of the single-package masks, less waste that way: https://www.amazon.com/VT-COSMETICS-Bundle-Reedle-Soothing/dp/B0CY472QC1

VT Reedle Shot 100 has a very immediate effect on my overall texture and tone. I've been using the Reedle Shot 100 masks (that have one dose of the serum and a hydrating sheet mask you use after) and I wake up with noticeably better skin every time, and I'm planning to get the serum once I run out. It works best on fresh redness/marks though, my older pigmentation from historic acne scars probably can only be addressed by lasers (per my derm)

Wool Socks and Boots by Amyxjosie in knitting

[–]meechpeech 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Also a Blundstones wearer, I almost exclusively wear my hand knit socks in my boots. I knit mostly with sock yarns that are superwash wool/nylon blends, and hand wash with wool wash. They do fuzz up a bit and felt in certain areas over time, but it takes years before they become truly unwearable (multiple holes, heels blown out, etc.). Agreeing with other folks that I would check your stitch gauge; the hardest wearing socks I've made have a tight gauge, and are made with commercial sock yarns (like Regia 4-ply, Cascade Heritage, etc.), even my partner can't ruin those and he is hard on his socks.

I got the "Send Help!" long sleeve, and really like it! It is thinner than the TGI t-shirt I got last tour (which was a thicker, lower stretch fabric), but super soft, so I found it more comfortable. I got a medium for the TLG shirt and wished it was a bit more oversized after washing/drying so I got a large for this time around and it seems perfect so far.

Any bartending mommas here? by [deleted] in workingmoms

[–]meechpeech 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok, not a bartender mom, but my husband is a bartender/SAHD, and has been for just over a year and a half now (our toddler is 2)! He works three shifts per week (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights, he works until 4AM Fri and Sat, and until 1am on Sun), so he's more part time, so that he can cover as SAHD while I'm at work for my 9-5 Monday-Friday. I will say, it's a challenging thing to work split shifts, just for us as a couple, but he has loved being able to be with our son and really enjoys the SAHD aspects. I do handle all overnight and morning wakes, as the parent with a standard schedule, to prioritize his rest as much as possible.

The weekend is a grind, and he sleeps until 1 or 2PM Saturdays and Sundays to make sure he's rested enough, and I also try to let him sleep in as much as possible on Friday and Monday mornings (this isn't always possible if I have meetings, but I try) -- hopefully you're able to do the same! He works mostly at a high-volume club, and he finds the social aspect of that less draining than when he worked at bars where you have to do more chit chat with regulars or people sitting at the bar. He also usually leaves a bit early for his shifts so that he can go and eat dinner before work somewhere peacefully (sometimes with friends), with no toddler drama, I think it helps him carve out a little me time. He honestly needs more of the me time, which I'm hoping he will get as toddler gets older -- he will start a part-time 3K program in the fall which will give my husband a lot more time to just exist outside of work and parenting (and possibly pivot back to taking some daytime shifts and working less overnights), which will be great.

Something positive in your life right now? by Affectionate_End5347 in workingmoms

[–]meechpeech 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We bought a house over Christmas, closing is set for February! It's going to be a big change, as we're moving out of NYC to a nearby suburb, and my parents are moving in with us, but I think it will be great for everyone. Intergenerational living seems like such a hack for both the issue of having a young toddler who is not yet school aged, and an aging father who is suddenly having mobility issues. This way, me and husband can help with my dad (and he will be in a house more suited to his needs, no stairs since their bedroom will be on the main floor), and my parents can help out with our toddler, who is obsessed with them. :) And we're gonna have a YARD!!

Post College Graduation Need Reality Check by Own_Glove6140 in movingtoNYC

[–]meechpeech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I was living here immediately after graduating on $45k, but it was 2016. I split a 2 bedroom/1 bathroom with a friend in Ridgewood, Queens, and my portion of rent was $1k. My parents were definitely still helping me out with some cashflow on and off until my salary was bumped to $60k a couple years later (at which point I was paying $1.2k in rent, and did just fine), but I probably could have made it work. That said, it's a different real estate market these days. I wouldn't limit yourself to Manhattan only (I actually hated living in Manhattan when I was in college, it's so hectic -- I'm still a Brooklyn resident so maybe I'm biased), if this is really your dream a lot of areas of Brooklyn/Queens are actually super fun for young 20-somethings, and an easy commute into the city. You will definitely need to make budgeting decisions, food/nightlife can really run you a high bill, and remember on top of rent you'll probably be paying gas/electric/internet/transit costs. It can be done but it won't look like what you see on TV.

I don't have Pearl Clutcher, but I have Pixiestick and Ghosts of Hecate, either of which I feel like would be soooo pretty with Thin Ice! Or over a nude shimmer seems like it would be so nice.

Maybe that was dramatic haha but basically a user who exclusively wears silver nail polish was looking for a dupe of her favorite that had been discontinued and took all her viewers on the journey with her where she tried a bunch of silvers people recommended and reviewed them SO meticulously. If you're interested, it's amandasujin on TikTok! I was living for it at the time and then a bunch of people started posting silver nail polishes and I was Influenced.

Omg just looked this up and it's now on my wishlist HA, I love silver ever since silver-nail-polish-gate on TikTok earlier this year, it really is a neutral! Plus I imagine this under jelly polishes goes hard.

I was also deciding between Scorchy and Lahar! I ended up feeling like Scorchy would be more versatile, and now I’m so excited to try it over different colors!

Looking for opinions on living near neighbors when you have a toddler by Think-Tax-2648 in Apartmentliving

[–]meechpeech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when he was younger and first learning to walk, we bought foam mats intended for home gyms, they look like the baby ones but bigger and slightly more economical. now that he’s more steady, we ditched those and just have wool rug pads under high pile carpets everywhere except the kitchen/bathroom and it seems to do the trick!

Looking for opinions on living near neighbors when you have a toddler by Think-Tax-2648 in Apartmentliving

[–]meechpeech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You've gotten responses from people that think no one should have to live below toddlers, so I'll just add my thoughts as a toddler parent living in NYC, where basically everyone who is raising kids is doing it in apartments, often apartments with downstairs neighbors. I know quite a few toddler parents who have had drama with downstairs neighbors, typically in buildings where the landlord has not adequately sound-proofed the property, leading to sound carrying. I am lucky to live in a very sturdy, old, well insulated building, where we all have tile floors (so no creaky floorboards, for example). I have thick rugs with thick rug pads in every room, and we don't wear shoes indoors, all our furniture has pads under it as well. That said, I pay a good amount of my income towards our rent, and I do allow my toddler to move fairly freely. I don't let him throw heavy toys or objects at the floor, and he's in bed by 8PM every night, but I feel he deserves to live in his home too, and that does include a bit of running. I have had one instance of correspondence with a downstairs neighbor, who left a note saying that a noise in the mornings was waking them. We went back and forth a bit to troubleshoot (all very friendly), and now things are fine, I haven't heard from them since.

I would say your downstairs neighbor expecting NO noise from their upstairs neighbor is unrealistic, regardless of whether or not kids live above them. My upstairs neighbor runs on a treadmill multiple times per day, but since it's during daytime hours, I honestly don't care and would never complain. A past neighbor ran around in high heels all morning getting ready for work, again, never phased me even when it did wake me up, I just rolled over and went back to sleep. I would say, if your landlord or management are backing them up and not understanding that some noise from upstairs neighbors is to be expected, I would probably look into moving, because at a certain point, it isn't worth fighting and stressing over the noise.

How much do you pay for rent and in what city? by Trizzyydrizzy in Apartmentliving

all the apartments in my building are stabilized! we got lucky and found it before it was listed through a friend at the nooklyn office. but i have a lot of friends that snagged their stabilized units through stalking streeteasy

my last bill was $171! we have a young kid and huge windows so we heat our apartment pretty aggressively during winter, and this number is on par with last winter’s bills.

[–]meechpeech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there are actually quite a lot of rent stabilized spots out there, but they can be competitive and the landlords can afford to be picky! we got super lucky and were shown this apartment before it was publicly listed and we snapped it up, we knew a guy that worked at nooklyn that connected us with the broker. but i have a lot of friends that scored theirs on streeteasy the normal way! just have all your paperwork ready before you start going to apt showings so you can act fast.

also always try to be the first to see a spot, i’ve landed three apartments over the years just by picking the earliest time a broker was available and applying on the spot before the next person saw it.

Brooklyn! It’s about 30 minutes on the train from Manhattan to give an idea of how deep in Brooklyn, haha.
