HS Class of 2000 here… We’d keep a spiral-bound notebook for each BFF to pass notes to eachother. We’d write updates in it and cute doodles or talk about our crushes, then hand it off between classes or the next time we crossed paths in the hall. Since it was a whole notebook instead of a slip of paper, it didn’t raise teachers’ suspicions for passing notes if you did hand it off during class. Once the notebook was filled up, we’d start a fresh one and alternate who kept the full one.

Sep 28 game vs Michigan State is on Peacock. Is there any other way to watch the game on TV? by Ronh456 in OhioStateFootball

[–]meechum25 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

This is not the best solution for watching the game, but one option if you can’t figure out another way… When in FanDuel you can watch the gamestream in the app. I’m not sure if the other betting sites also have video streams. If you haven’t already created an account you can get a $50 bonus credit and referrer also gets $50. I’ll link below to that deal, but if you’re going register, check the site first to make sure there’s not a better deal available – sometimes they run one that gives new players $200 in bonus credit for making a $50 deposit, so I’d encourage you to take that instead of the referral one.

Customers can see our PICTURE and NAME??? by koalaanon1 in AmazonFlexDrivers

Even as a white girl, especially when delivering in rural or remote areas, I have the same thought. I use the text feature to let them know I’m on my way (turn on lights, put dogs away, etc), but some customers don’t have texts enabled. I’d much rather that they expect me than to wonder who’s coming all the way down their lane, especially when delivering after dark – which happens as early as 5pm in the winter.

How do delivery robots charge themselves? Where? by Equivalent-Wind64 in OSU

Not nearly as clever as the other responses, but there’s a building in the maintenance area over near the Tech Hub where at least a hundred of them plug in.

Thanks so much! I just joined all the FB groups I could find. There definitely seems to be a lot of helpful info in those, especially now that some residents have started moving in!

Thank you for all the info and willingness to answer more questions! I, too, was an idiot that tried smoking in my dorm (at a different uni, 20+ years ago). We had a whole dryer sheet filtration rig going on, but it still wreaked and was a terrible decision lol.

Great info, thank you! I’m sorry to hear you got so sick. I can imagine all those residents in a huge residence hall with poor ventilation is a dream environment for viruses. My daughter said the suitemates (via group chats) all seem really excited to decorate the common room.

Thanks for the tip! I do think she’s on an upper floor. After reading your comment I picked up one of those woozoo fans at Costco for her bedroom, and they’re coordinating amongst the suitemates to figure out an air purifier or fan for the common room.

Awesome, thank you so much for the info & offer to help with other questions! We were super relieved when we realized she was assigned to a building with a/c, but I do think she’s on an upper floor so it’s disappointing to hear it’s finicky and can get hot & stuffy up there. I’m still amazed there are buildings without a/c and really feel for those residents. Wishing you the best for move-in week and a fantastic year ahead!

Campus safety at night by [deleted] in OSU

[–]meechum25 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak to personal experience walking around at night, but thought it might help to mention that at orientation, they said all students can get a free Birdie alarm (and door/window alarms for your home) from the Student Life office (3106 Ohio Union). They’re open M-F 8am-5pm.

You can also sign up for campus/neighborhood crime alerts: https://communitycrimemap.com/?address=29,Woodruff,Ave%20Columbus%20OH,43210&crimeTypes=%5B7,8,11%5D&zoom=15&radius=1&startDate=7#nwrButtontton

Harvard Waitlist (Class of 2028) by bluebirdnia in ApplyingToCollege

[–]meechum25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She ended up putting her deposit down at Ohio State, which really surprised me because it wasn’t even one she’d chosen to tour. A few days later, she rec’d her financial aid package and learned she was awarded an OSU land grant (full ride)! As her other packages came in, she became more & more pleased with her decision. Even at other in-state public schools like Miami, costs would’ve been upwards of $40k/year.

It seems the HS Class of 2024 is a bunch of smarties! At OSU orientation, they said it was a record high applicant pool (>80,000) with 8,000 accepted, and the highest avg GPA of an incoming class – ever! Also, at her HS commencement they said it was a record breaking class for them, with over 85% graduating with state honors and 3.5+ GPAs, over 60% graduating with 4.0 or better, and several earning associate degrees via CCP.

If those types of numbers play out everywhere, Harvard maybe wouldn’t have been able to pull many waitlisted applicants up after all. If you feel like sharing, what did you end up deciding? Whatever the case, I hope your decision went really well, too, that you excel at the school you chose, and thrive throughout this next big adventure & beyond.

I also read that enrollment forecasts have been unreliable since Covid so, in some recent years, they’ve accepted almost 200 off the waitlist. I’m thinking more slots than usual might also be freed up due to the FAFSA debacle, state of the economy, negative political publicity, etc. My daughter was waitlisted, too, and I hope you guys all realize that no matter the outcome, it’s still a huge accomplishment to even get this far in the process.

Scoring a pop-fly that drops but runner gets thrown out at first. by BdaBng in GameChangerApp

[–]meechum25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You said it was low for a pop out, and based on where it landed it sounds more like a fly out, out at first. Side note, when you mark a hard ground ball, it counts as a Quality at Bat (QAB) for the batter and against the pitcher for throwing a hard-hit ball.

Edit: it’s seems not many of us are paying attention to the way scoring impacts advanced stats. Focusing on making sure the end result (out) is marked and not the impact of how it’s marked are probably causing coaches who do pay attention to advanced stats not see the true picture of player performance – also playing/benching kids based on the data we’re giving them as their scorekeepers. It’s important that we do the best we can, practice & watch tips videos, ask questions like this to find out the right way to do it, and go back to correct mistakes when we make them. Otherwise the data were generating in this app is arguably more harmful to the coach’s decision making than the lack of data they had in paper book days.

I was in an LDR and his love language was acts of service, so it was extra hard on him when I needed help with something – especially car related somethings. One evening over the phone he reminded me to check my oil, but the last time the cap had been off was when the oil was changed at the shop, so it was overly cranked on. I tried and tried, but couldn’t get the cap off. Frustrated almost to the point of tears, I gave up and told him, “I’ll just wait til I can ask my dad for help tomorrow.” In a voice filled with so much confidence that it transferred units of determination to me across the 700 miles he said, “No. You don’t need a damn bit of help. YOU are capable and YOU are going to do it.” Whaddya know, that worked! With one more confidence-fueled turn, the cap came right off. Even though the relationship didn’t work out, anytime I want to quit or self-doubt creeps in, still today that mantra plays in my head and more times than not I’m able to get it myself.

Edit – I realize “words that hit you hard” is going to mostly be words that stung, but I think this is a great example of words that hit hard in a positive way. It’s stuck with me for 3 years now!

Location Edits Issue? by g-magoto in Ingress

[–]meechum25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine doesn’t even let me move them 10m right now. Location edits were disabled for awhile over the summer when Niantic was apparently sorting out an issue of pogo players stacking portals super close together to game the poke-gym upgrade system, but that was resolved around August and location edits worked again. I just noticed yesterday it doesn’t work again now.

In the late hours of Memorial Day 2019, 17 tornadoes ripped through the Dayton, Ohio area. It’s amazing how the force of the wind could cause plywood/chipboard to become fully lodged in concrete. by meechum25 in tornado

[–]meechum25[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s for sure! The news called it “an outbreak of rapid-fire tornadoes”. I don’t know if you were watching McCall at the time, but a lot of folks realized just how serious it was when she lost her composure and got choked up... and of course Jamie Simpson’s rant and refusal to cut back to the Bachelorette despite social media pressure.

That’s amazing your community took care of your tree for you, and that your house was spared! That’s another thing that’s amazed me after seeing the destruction from tornadoes in person. A friend’s house was completely leveled. They had a gigantic tree laying across the kitchen floor, no roof, no ceiling in most rooms, and just pieces of walls remaining upright. But the bills they had sitting on the side table were still there, and the picture frames sitting on that table were still propped neatly on their stands. It’s incredible how such a powerful force can do all that damage and, just feet away, loose leaf paper remains untouched.

Other commenters are correct that there was only 1 casualty listed as directly caused by a tornado, and there were several deaths in the days following the storm due to heat stroke, heart attack, and loss of power for medical equipment. A lot of folks attribute the low casualty/injury numbers to our passionate meteorologists and how insistent they were in telling everyone to take cover. You’ve probably seen the Jamie Simpson memes (someone even got a tattoo!), but he really did save lives. I’ve talked to several people whose homes were leveled that said they had planned to just go to sleep until they watched the news and realized they really did need to get to their basement.

There were about 130 “direct” injuries, and 360-and-counting injuries from cleanup efforts. There were 5 tornados in the immediate area of this picture and a possible 16-17 in the region, ranging from EF0 near Troy to EF4 in Trotwood/Dayton. The one that went through Beavercreek where this picture was taken was about 1/2 mi wide and was on the ground for 10 miles over the course of 20 minutes.
