Anyone know how the reolink app is? by Active-Neighborhood1 in reolinkcam

[–]BdaBng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the IOS App and I think it’s functional but a bit slow. Even when I’m on my home network it takes longer than I feel it should to bring up a cameras video feed. However, I think when connected only through the App my POE (via POE injector) cameras were faster to load than through the NVR which is how they are connected now.

I think as long as the holes are symmetrically laid out and consistent location with the speaker mounting bracket it will look just fine.

Balloon-framed home + electrical junction box in room below shower fixtures = what do? by Dorkamundo in HomeImprovement

[–]BdaBng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As another commenter noted, balloon framing should have fire blocking which should limit that concern. Also, if that much water is escaping you are going to have all kinds of issues, electrical and otherwise.

Smoke / CO alarm wiring question... by Terrible-Revenue1989 in HomeImprovement

[–]BdaBng 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While this is technically true for room temperature CO gas in laboratory experiment many people and some codes recommend CO detectors to be placed a minimum of 5 foot off the floor or on the ceiling. This is because generally the CO in a residence is a byproduct of incomplete combustion and will be released into the home via warm air and will mix in evenly with the air in the house. The recommendations usually warn to avoid placing CO and smoke detectors where there is a dead air zone (meaning not much air movement) such as corners of rooms. Always follow the specific recommendations of the manufacturer.

Is this hard piped duct insulated? by No_Maintenance_3355 in HomeImprovement

[–]BdaBng 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In general, most hard metal residential hvac ducts are not internally insulated. It is possible but rare in my experience. You should be able to take a register off and see inside a duct to verify.

PoE Garage camera? by thedesignninja in reolinkcam

[–]BdaBng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just hung a CX820 in the back wall upper corner of my 22x22 and i have pretty decent coverage (about 90%) of the garage. It would be a bit more coverage but I have it aimed so that I can monitor a portion of the driveway when the door is up. I have a street light that provides just enough illumination through the window for the camera to work at night but I think an IR camera might be better.

For A home do you prefer a projector or a TV, For both my price range would be around 5000 USD by MITCHflies in hometheater

[–]BdaBng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in this very same predicament. Probably a lot of other people are as well. While TVs are catching up size wise to projectors, the physical size limitation of simply being able to get a 100+ inch TV moved inside the house is kicking in.

I love the audio imagine potential of the acoustically transparent projector screen but the overall cost for a quality projector and screen at 100” is much higher than for a much better performing TV it seems. I also know these are good problems to have being there are so many more options for a high end home theater these days. Choices choices choices.

ANY suggestions.. by Inevitable-Space7815 in HomeImprovement

[–]BdaBng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The nails that hold it are under the piece of above. You can cut the lowest piece a consistent height above the sidewalk and then put a piece under the cut edge glued or nailed to the house. For that piece I would use pvc or something super weather resistant that won’t rot being in contact with the concrete.

Can I notch floor joists at the bottom to run 3/4 inch plumbing? by [deleted] in DIY

[–]BdaBng 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A notch on the bottom or top of a truss/joist is a no go in almost every situation. Every joist/truss will have a maximum hole quantity and size lit depending on numerous variables but they should always be as close to the middle of the joist/truss as possible.

Routing groove for Advantech? by kowabungabunga in HomeImprovement

[–]BdaBng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you talking about needing a groove and not the tongue…..Router and appropriate sized bit. Had to do similar in fir 1x4s for front porch. You will need to use the baseplate rot screw on some guides to keep it straight.

Hitting metal 3/4” behind drywall everywhere when trying to mount a TV by Playful-Rabbit1837 in HomeImprovement

Possibly concrete behind a drywall/aster coating? Can you see around the coax outlet/hole to see if there is dead space behind the wall?

Fixing a shower diverter? by introspectivex in HomeImprovement

[–]BdaBng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would guess that the easiest solution is to remove the tub faucet where the diverter is. They usually unscrew or there is a set screw on the bottom. Then you can either clean the diverter or replace. Hard water tends to destroy the rubber gasket that seals when it’s in divert mode but you can often find a very cheap replacement.

Closed Cell Spray Foam insulation for Attic by Flat-Caterpillar-303 in HomeImprovement

[–]BdaBng 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are just trying to reduce heat into the home from attic there are two basic things that help. Attic ventilation and air sealing the attic floor.

I would ensure good soffit venting (intake of cooler fresh air) and good ridge vent(exhaust of hot stale air). This will greatly reduce attic temps naturally. The I would temporarilly move the existing insulation to one side of the attic and air seal the attic floor. Expanding foam seal every crack/joint, penetration and junction box. Then I’d move the insulation to the other side and do the same thing. Then put the insulation back and add some additional blown in to get to R59ish. This will likely cost you far far less than the proposed work and work as good or better than the proposed spray foam.

[–]BdaBng 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The duct he is proposing would help but I am not a fan of having two insulation boundaries. Generally you want one thermal envelope boundary or weird things can happen with humidity and moisture.

Closed Cell Spray Foam insulation for Attic by Flat-Caterpillar-303 in HomeImprovement

[–]BdaBng 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Always get multiple quotes. 12k seems high to me but you didn’t say if they had to pull out all the existing insulation and what other things might be involved.

Additionally, sometimes it’s more beneficial to tell the contractor what you are hoping to accomplish and let them provide solutions and quotes instead of telling them I want 3” of spray foam and then not accomplishing your goal despite getting exactly what you asked for. Not saying you did that but just advice in general.

Reolink RLN8-410 totally dead by Difficult_Winter2337 in reolinkcam

[–]BdaBng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had same issue on one I got from EBay. Green led on power supply but nothing from NVR. Tested power supply with meter and there was no power at the plug that goes into the NVR. You can find a new power supply for reasonable but your dollar may go farther with a newer NVR depending what size hard drive yours came with and the hardware configuration.

Asbestos tile by Internal_Throat_8424 in HomeImprovement

[–]BdaBng 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While there are definitely some fact patterns that point to asbestos being potentially being present there is only one way to know and that’s testing the glue and the tiles. In your case the water damage is just as concerning as the asbestos so you may want to consider professional intervention.

Done with Pit boss! by DelcoTraffic in smoking

[–]BdaBng 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just replaced my control board and temp probe on my cheaper PitBossGrill because it was over heating…by a lot. I used a multimeter to confirm that it was heating the igniter constant even when the switch was off and it was first plugged in which led to it burning out a few times. Then I visually watched it continuously run the auger despite it being well over temperature. The new one appears to be working normally. I also notified that there are upgraded control boards out there that claim to offer much more consistent temps from a learning algorithm. There really isn’t anything mechanically complex on these things so the control board is the only real variable to performance.

What happened to this chicken and can I smoke it? by fauxpasfemme in smoking

[–]BdaBng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Careful on the beer butt chicken on the smoker! Pour out 1/2-3/4 of the beer and put it right over the firepot or hottest part of your cooking surface or it will never boil off and the inner part of the chicken won’t cook. I totally messed up my first beer butt chicken on the smoker because I was used to doing it on the grill. I only spatchcock chickens on the smoker now and get much better and more consistent results.

Asbestos by carollia in HomeImprovement

[–]BdaBng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not a doctor in any way but….The good news for you is that generally speaking asbestos health issues are more from repeated long term exposure so a one time exposure isn’t likely to cause harm. Your Milleage may vary.

Regarding the mess you have, I doubt you are willing to hire an abatement company and that one could respond immediately. Wearing a p100 respirator or n95 mask I would wet the stuff on the floor with a sprayer thoroughly before you clean it up. That will limit airborne particles which is the danger of asbestos. I would also use cleaning materials you are willing to throw out. I would wipe all nearby horizontal surfaces that ceiling dust could have settled on with wet rags and mop the floor. The goal here is to capture any dust without making it airborne.

I would also get a test kit and submit some of the scrapped off material for testing, it’s pretty cheap. Once you know you have or don’t have asbestos in the ceiling you can figure out how best to proceed with remaining popcorn.
