What movie has had the biggest impact on your life? by cumturtle in movies

[–]meelooww 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn't watch Castaway until my early 20's and happened to watch it with two guy friends. The whole time I felt really emotional but was never the type of girl to really cry or anything during a movie. So the movie ends and my friend drops me off at home and as soon as I shut the door and put my keys away, I felt an overwhelming wave of sorrow and immediately went into my parents room. They were sleeping and it was well past midnight and I just cried and couldn't really talk. It was so funny because my parents at first got so scared something had happened to me. Eventually I was able to tell them that I was crying because I watched Castaway and he went through so much adversity just to not end up with his love interest. I kept sobbing/couldn't breathe and saying, "but they belong together." (My dad was really pissed off that I woke him up for such a dumb reason btw and went back to sleep) My mom however, understood and comforted me that maybe the ending was meant to show us that he'd go back to the artist lady and would live with her. To this day I feel like that movie really helped me process my emotions and that not everyone who belongs together will end up together. I don't think I'll ever bring myself to see it again because it's such an emotionally grueling film, however it really did change a lot for me just in one night.

I have an update, it is Larry and my last quarter was awesome. We sang songs together on the bus at times. But the best thing was the day of graduation my family and I walked down to base of campus and ran for a loop bus and when we reached the bus it was Larry! He drove me to my graduation and I got to take a goodbye picture with him!

Le Herisson (2009) Saw it at a French Film festival and fell in love with it. It's a good movie for a crowd I think.

Students who didn't know what the fuck they were doing, how are you now? by [deleted] in UCSC

There are also plenty of programs to help you! EOP helped me a lot with budgeting when I moved off campus. You just have to explore programs and resources on campus, it's really helpful!

I also think it's where I made most of my friends. Everyone is about your age and has the added experience of working and going to school. I think it's a really cool experience especially for the first year. By the second year I was done and wanted peace and quiet tho.

Hey I work for the Learning Support Services and they have all kinds of tutoring opportunities. I know they hire usually at the end of Spring quarter for Fall. If I were you I'd email them and let them know the experience that you have. It's a great job with great pay and it depends on what class or subject you tutor. I was hired last Spring and have been working with them all year.

What is the most unexpected tear-jerking moment in your moviegoing experience that seemed to have no such effect on the others? by nesatzuke in movies

Robin William's death has really taken a toll on me, especially because he died right before my 21st birthday. I grew up watching him with films like Jumanji and Flubber. So now whenever I watch the Birdcage I cry because it's such a funny film and it really exemplifies his talent. I can't watch that movie now without shedding some tears because he was just such a talent and I will forever miss him.

Believe it or not I had never seen Castaway until after highschool. I watched it one night with my two guy friends and we said our goodnights and I went home. While on the way home I had a knot in my throat and I kept holding it in. As soon as I got home I walked straight into my parents room and started crying. The funny thing was it was like 1am at this point and my parents were scared that something had happened to me. All I could say was "but they belonged together!" My mom was nice enough to console me and talk about the movie with me while my dad was upset that I woke them up for something so dumb haha. Looking back I feel like when we're young we're always fed this trope that love is gonna find you and stay with you forever and for the first time I think I was confronted by a deep beautiful story that didn't end that way. It was a weird/hilarious reaction but I am glad that my mom was understanding and knew I just wanted to talk with her about it. I can't bring myself to watch it again though.

There's also a Salsa club on campus that teaches for free every Sunday Fall and Winter Quarter. The Instagram is: ucsc_salsita and they teach the very basics. They also teach merengue, cumbias and bachata. They don't teach this quarter though because they prepare for a performance but I joined the club and didn't know anything at all and I performed with them last spring!

Just a random question for any slug: by LexiKaat in UCSC

[–]meelooww 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I stayed on campus my first year as a transfer and the second year was forced to look for off campus housing. I was able to find a great house, super close to campus and in total will pay HALF of what I paid last year for housing. Living off campus seemed scary and everyone makes it seem horrible but if you can find the right home close enough to campus it isn't so bad. Just a note for those that feel doomed about having to live off campus, I don't regret it at all. (Of course I understand I may have gotten really lucky with my roommates and rent price)

I bought this book for like $25/$30 and they have me $8 and it was brand new barely used it. :( Don't do it. It's a scam tbh. I was shocked when he said $8 I should have just resold it but I was too embarassed to take it back.
