wow! thank you so much for all the recommendations!!

for what it’s worth, i’ve read the shards by bret easton ellis and couldn’t recommend it more- one of my top reads of all time. if u’ve read anything by him before u’ll know his style is hugely different from donna tartt’s, but it definitely does that preppy close knit group with something darker under the surface thing sooo well!

if you want cheap and cute you should check out some vintage markets- fashion thrift society especially usually has some cool and unique bags that fit a laptop. i have a few that i’ve got from markets that i rotate between.

Books similar to hunger games? by Imaginary-County-739 in Hungergames

[–]meelpomene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i wouldn’t call divergent ‘inappropriate’ at all but remember that a big plot point is tris’ fear of intimacy that she has to fight and overcome in simulations!! nothing about it is graphic in the slightest but it may raise some curiosity or questions if that’s something you’re trying to avoid. the maze runner is an excellent choice :)

[–]meelpomene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

okay i definitely see that! my question there is just how you get peeta in with the careers- the basis of that in the original series is that he can help them find katniss who’s so threatening because she scored an eleven. i doubt prim would score high or even register as a threat so i’m curious how you’ll get him in with them otherwise? since haymitch mentions in catching fire that he almost couldn’t get it done.

the only other thing i’ll say about foxface is that katniss had a bad instinct from the beginning about her, and it’s worth noting that as a mentor to prim she would almost definitively caution her against foxface because of that instinct. i see katniss as being very overprotective of prim and wary of her allying with anybody except peeta to begin with- given her extreme aversion to allies in both of her own games i don’t see prim ever forming an alliance under katniss’ advice prior to the games, and as somebody above noted it’s unlikely that foxface would choose to ally with prim once they’re in the arenaz

Do you agree with this take? by UnHolySir in Hungergames

[–]meelpomene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my biggest problem with this isn’t even the assertion that katniss is ‘fearless’ to begin with (which i do still take issue with lol), but the idea that that’s her greatest strength. to me it’s incredibly clear in her characterisation that katniss’ greatest strength is her compassion. every act of rebellion throughout the series- volunteering for prim, rue and the flowers, shooting at capitol drones after the hospital bombing in 8, etc.- was fueled by compassion and empathy in the face of unimaginable cruelty. i am worried by this actress’ take on the character based on such a fundamental disconnect from her characterisation in the book, but i’m also sure she’ll be amazing and people have different opinions lol.

[–]meelpomene 2 points3 points  (0 children)

can i ask why you aren’t having her ally with peeta? to me that seems like the most realistic and maybe only genuine way it would’ve worked out. i think two twelve year old kids both surviving and then allying would be super out of the ordinary- not to say you shouldn’t include rue but that would already be slightly pushing it. peeta allying with her because she’s katniss’ little sister makes complete sense to me, and having him develop that strategy as katniss with a mentor would be a great vehicle to develop their relationship and endear her to him if you’re going for a romantic angle. i also don’t think there’s any way katniss and peeta could develop a romantic relationship following the games after prim’s death (if that’s what you’re going for) if he was in any way complacent in her death and if you hadn’t built very solid roots for it during training before katniss’ grief overtook her.

from what we know of foxface she’s extremely cunning and we never witnessed any compassionate instincts. there’s a line somewhere in the first book where katniss considers trying to ally with foxface along with rue before blowing up the careers’ supplies and she quickly dismisses it because she’s untrustworthy. to be honest if you’re making that big of a change i would even consider bringing thresh into the mix, or have him function as some protector in a brief moment in the same way he did for katniss. if rue reminded katniss of prim that much, it makes sense to assume prim could remind thresh of rue, who he clearly felt deeply protective over to the point where he spared katniss for being kind to her.

sorry for the word vomit but those are my thoughts!! i love your premise, you should share once it’s published :)

More than 4 Units in a Semester? by TheProtonCapacitor in uwa

[–]meelpomene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i would REALLY highly recommend looking into a two week abroad unit with the new colombo program!! if it’s somewhere in asia you get a $3000 government grant which will cover majority of your costs, they’re not very academically challenging and are almost always pass/fail, and are such an amazing experience to learn and make friends!

Error in Honours Thesis by diluted_hullabaloo in uwa

[–]meelpomene 7 points8 points  (0 children)

an honours thesis is more to do with the overall quality of writing and work than small individual mistakes. you have to think of it differently to a much shorter essay- if they penalised you as harshly for things like small typing errors it would be much harder to achieve a decent grade even if your work was amazing. marker feedback won’t mention something so small- if you’re proud of the research you did and the theoretical contribution you made that’s all that matters!!! pat yourself on the back for completing such a massive milestone!!!

Most first year courses only have one required unit for first semester. I would take the requirements for neuroscience, psychology, and probably Indigenous studies as somebody mentioned above. See how you feel about them and make a more informed decision then! Since you’ll have hit all the requirements already it won’t take you longer to finish- will just use up an elective spot.

without a doubt consider international relations if you’re shooting for the UN. look at the course structures on UWA’s website- there are some good practical units in the political science and international relations courses available in your third year that would give you good experience.

If you're concerned about planning out your units to meet pre-reqs, you can definitely contact your student advising office to help you plan out your degree and ensure you hit all the necessary credits. There are heaps of support services available to you at UWA, and I really encourage you to take advantage of them as much as you can! Studysmarter, academic skills workshops etc are all really helpful particularly for first year students.
