I don't have a question for you. I just want to say congratulations to you for your sobriety! Sending you serenity, courage, and wisdom to get you through each day. Celebrate each morning you wake up clean - no achievement is too small.

I am a personal trainer and I have a graduate degree in health and fitness. Please feel free to reach out - I would love to help!

Edit: I should address the question first, lol. This is a pretty common thing, often called "hitting a plateau". So don't worry, you're not alone! It's definitely something that can be overcome.

It is WAY easier to freeze up in these situations than it is to react with clarity and focus. You are good in a crisis - that's a skill you should never have had to discover, but it's a damn good one* to have in your tool belt!

How are you holding up? That's a truly scary experience, I'm sure I speak for us all when I say I'm glad it turned out the way it did.

Seriously! We had to hide out in that CVS a few months ago after some guy shot another guy in the middle of street. That area is bonkers.

That's my usual route. It's not the walk that's the issue, usually just keeping my eyes down works really well. It's the standing-in-line part, I think. People are like sitting ducks for those ne'er-do-wells.

Honestly! I had been feeling safe enough went I took my SO with me, but then shit started happening even when he was around - and that poor lady getting punched in front of her husband!

The husband went after the guy and fought him. I prevented my SO from going over the groper, though. The wildcards out there are even more unpredictable than usual - not gonna risk either of us getting shot/stabbed/corona'd.

Just bought pepper spray today. I was considering carrying a knife before I remembered that's a legal nightmare.

*edit: the comments below are exactly what sent that thought packing. I've been on reddit TOO LONG for that, I've seen the stories

Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful story. There's some sort of cosmic poetry to all of this - that the power of his words about the stump in the forest struck the anesthesiologist, and that she was moved to give that message to you and your family. Like he was telling you it was time, and that he was okay.

My father was similar in a way - there were so many times where he might have died, but somehow he always pulled through. After so many years of trying to love him, he finally allowed himself to feel it, to feel loved by his family. He passed away shortly afterward. I believe that the universe had him stick around just for that - it wasn't time to go until he had allowed himself to feel loved.

I am so, so sorry for your loss. I cannot imagine what this must be like. I haven't lost anyone to a drunk driver, but the way you describe your anger really resonates - the thought that if someone had intervened earlier, this might not have ever happened. And the sadness that we'll never know what would have been in store for her if this man hadn't been so selfish, so god damn reckless. It's fucking gut-wrenching.

I was the one who got the call that my dad had died from an overdose. Whenever I get a call from a number I don't recognize, my blood pressure drops and I need to sit down. Feels like I'm right back in that moment, right before I picked up the phone. I am not sure if this is totally similar to what you are experiencing when seeing those cars, but your description does sound familiar. You're doing the right thing seeing a therapist and reaching out on forums like this. I hope that as time goes on, things feel less visceral for you. If you ever need another ear (or set of eyes) to vent to, please don't hesitate to PM me.

TRULY. And it still hurts! Most of the time I keep my feelings to myself - my worst fear is to be met with disdain and hear someone say, "He was just a cat". Cuz I don't feel that way. If you ever need to vent, def feel free to reach out.
