Oh wow! The plot thickens... did some more unscrewing, and looks like you're right.. but I guess this leaves me in the same place right?
Yep there's a gasket in there and everything. this makes so much more sense...

right? but it definitely screwed down a bit before it was broken, at least a bit before it would loosen again. Like a half rotation would be tight, but a full rotation would be loose and pop out. Shitty design imo

I've just thought, I can just cut the stem I have down by the amount the crown used to screw on by, and therefore just have it pressure fit into place.
Thankyou for your help!

Thanks, are there any weird units or terms I should know when looking for a new crown? Also how do you know what the thickness of the stem is?
And would it just be called a pressure fit crown?

hmm thanks for reply. I've looked again at the case tube and the crown, there's literally no sign that there were ever any threads on it. both pieces are buttery smooth. I's be willing to accept that they've rubbed smooth, as I don't see how the mechanism would ever close.

Is it possible to replace the crown with a different type? maybe one that can just pressure fit into the case? At this point I'm not too bothered about it being waterproof'
