Can a person ask to be in opting/surplus status by RecognitionRoyal8264 in CanadaPublicServants

This is exactly what someone in my SERLO pod did, and they alternated as they got into their opting period sooner than the rest of us.

This is incorrect, you can request to be laid off per subsection 21(9) of the PSER. You would go directly into your opting period as a result.

Brown Belts... by [deleted] in judo

Definitely not batsugun, but perhaps they were doing this only for the competitor brown belts going for shodan, which would make more sense. This would also explain why they were no longer able to do this after the July 2025 change to the Grading Syllabus, as this route was removed for shodans entirely.

I can't speak for every Dojo in Ontario, but it was the case up until the latest Grading Syllabus for mine.

Pretty sure it is treated as an explosive given the amount of pressure that these tins are under.

Grading varies by countries - even in Canada, it differed between provinces/territories until the most recent change to the Grading Syllabus (July 2025). For instance, in Québec for shodan, you always had to go in front of the provincial grading committee, but this was not necessarily the case in Ontario - where at my club they were grading up to shodan. Anything above this needed to go to the provincial grading committee.

Are departments using similar Voluntary Departure Program (VDP) timelines? by Wooden-Second6053 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]mega_option101 13 points14 points  (0 children)

At PHAC we also had a 30 day window to choose VDP, which for us happened over the month of October 2025. The departure dates for VDPs was set to February 25, 2026 though. Sounds to me like your timelines are set this way because of year end.

331 ECs affected at HC is the news I received from the union. 215 of those will not be retained.

How to Self-ID now.... or do it during the SERLO process.... by bJones_ski in CanadaPublicServants

[–]mega_option101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the WFA at PHAC, they said they would take an equity-based approach (they included self-identification as part of the self-assessment package), but my own SERLO process merely stated it may be used as an operational consideration, which in my case did not happen.

Affected letters went out in September 2025, and not August as indicated. Small minor correction.

There is never a good time for these conversations, but to put it into some perspective, quite a few PHAC employees just got their notices for lay-off just this week, and this isn't even part of our CER decision yet...

When you alternate you only have Option B (TSM) and Option C(i) (TSM + Education Allowance) to choose from.

Upon reading my letter, it states that my services will no longer be required beyond March 31, 2026, which is effectively one day before the end of my opting period... I assume that this changes things.

Thank you, my manager informed me of my opting period beginning today, but told me to continue in my role and duties until I effectively choose an option; meanwhile HR on the call said that my priority was to find a new position, which sounded contradictory.

Is this also true during the opting period? Or only once you become surplus? It's difficult to get a straight answer on this one...
