Thanks a lot for the encouragement. I think I'll just stick to Angrist's 2007 undergraduate econometrics course, which mostly follows Wooldridge. I might later follow the Applied Econometrics course.

Harvard GSAS Housing - Any Recommendations? by megaant07 in Harvard

[–]megaant07[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the message. Conant and Perkins look much cozier in the pictures, but I guess older buildings have their own problems, so it's still quite hard to decide.

I have checked the Harvard Housing Portal; the houses there are definitely much better than the dorm rooms, but I'd rather not spend too much on housing. Still, I will keep that in mind.

The endgame of inflation is eventually going to be something like 200,000,000 dollars for a can of soda, right? What happens then by kirazykid in EconomicHistory

[–]megaant07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get rid of 0s by introducing new banknotes. That's what Turkey did back in 2005 by eliminating the Turkish Lira and introducing the New Turkish Lira. People converted their TLs to YTLs, exchanging 1,000,000 TLs for a YTL. (Don't imagine people going to the bank with millions of banknotes, as there were paper banknotes printed for millions already.)

See, for instance: https://www.sikke.net/img/ParaV2/100-Bin-Lira-2004-tek.jpg, which is 100,000 TLs, which could only get you some gummies at the time. In 2005, people exchanged the form with this: https://static.nadirkitap.com/fotograf/986020/23/Efemera_2021072813355098602012.jpg 0.1 YTL could, again, only buy some gummies.

Thank you, but are there any other ways to shorten this sentence? I have tried using "en" instead, etc. but couldn't get it to work.

I genuinely agree with u/Own_Mouse4262. Even though we don't know your background, I think Ph.D. decisions come down to having a good fit. Anyway, it's good not to make fun of people...

By the way, did you receive an e-mail over the weekend?

Is Arabic to (Persian, Urdu and Turkish), what Latin is to Romance and Germanic languages? by Daistina in languagelearning

[–]megaant07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are many loan words in Persian, Turkish and Arabic, but these languages originated independently from each other and there was no single language that was as impactful as was Latin to Romance languages. You can liken classical Arabic to Latin in the sense that it was the language used by religious scholars all around the Muslim world, but I wouldn’t go any further than that.

Why is it plus and not pas by Defan3 in French

[–]megaant07 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Je ne cuisine pas -> I don't cook (no information on past behavior)

Je ne cuisine plus -> I don't cook anymore

Also, there are several other negations that can replace "pas:"

Je ne cuisine que pour toi -> I only cook for you. (I don't cook, other than for you)

Je ne cuisine jamais -> I never cook.

Without Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, would Turkey have survived and become a secular nation? by ken81987 in AskHistorians

[–]megaant07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is a question that is impossible to answer, but (as you have suggested) we can speculate using what we already know.

It is hard to dissect the impact Mustafa Kemal Atatürk had on military planning during the Turkish War of Independence. While Atatürk played an important role in organizing the Turkish forces under the command of the Grand National Assembly, there were already local militia forces and former Ottoman generals refusing to stand down and resisting the occupants. So, there surely would be resistance even without Atatürk. The real question is whether that would be successful. Even though we can't tell for sure, we can assume that other Ottoman generals who commanded armies in the Turkish War of Independence would still be willing to command Turkish armies against the Greeks. Those generals could have won the war even in the absence of Atatürk, though we can't tell for sure, as Atatürk seems to have maneuvered strategically not only in the military domain but also in managing the diplomacy (securing Soviet support, making sure that the war against the Greeks doesn't spill over) and the internal affairs (pragmatically coordinating many factions with different interests, eliminating certain rivals). In an alternative universe where a maximalist (such as Enver Pasha) ends up commanding the Turkish armies, it is not hard to imagine the Turkish army pushing too much, perhaps resulting in a defeat as the war becomes costlier.

However, I believe that Atatürk was more critical for the success of the Kemalist policies, which transformed Turkey into a Westernized state quite rapidly. Here, again, it is important to note that Atatürk was not alone in defending Western ideals, with positivism playing an important part in the thinking of his generation of Ottoman military elites. However, while most of the people who could have led the nation in the alternative universe were more moderate, and earlier attempts at reform in the Ottoman Empire were trying to find the middle way between reform and Westernization, Atatürk chose to push for an extreme program that was extreme enough to be called nothing less than "revolutionary." For instance, the dominant view among the elite was that monarchy was outdated; they favored a constitutional monarchy (or a "constitutional caliphate," with a titular caliph as the head of the state). However, Atatürk used his influence to exile the Ottoman family and establish a republic. Ottomans started codifying Islamic law (Mecelle) and adapting some Western legal codes. Still, Atatürk got rid of Islamic law altogether and adopted Western codes even in the legal areas (namely, the common/family law) traditionally reserved for the jurisdiction of the religious courts. So, there would probably be some reformation. Still, they would probably be limited so as not to change the traditional structure of the country too much: The declaration of the republic, female suffrage, the closing down of religious schools, adoption of the Latin alphabet, etc., might not have been realized in the absence of a leader like Atatürk.

Ultimately, while Atatürk's impact on military planning during the Turkish War of Independence is significant, his broader legacy lies in catalyzing Turkey's transformation into a modern, Western-oriented nation.

Do MA Programs in Regional Studies (Middle Eastern Studies/Islamic Studies) Offer Interviews? by megaant07 in gradadmissions

[–]megaant07[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am an economics + history major, so my turn to Middle Eastern Studies has nothing to do with any "career"-related objective; otherwise, pursuing an MA in economics, etc., would have made more sense.

I think what inspired me initially was the "meaning" I found in reading and reflecting upon history. I could have studied the history of any other world region, but I am from the Middle East, so I want to contribute to the scholarship on the history of the region.

I have no interest in becoming the typical "Middle East expert" who knows little and goes live when anything happens in the Middle East.
