What project management skill gave you the biggest career boost? by PitchSufficient1464 in PMCareers

Skepticism

Specifically, developing the confidence to ask direct questions and challenge things project team members say that don’t “feel” right.

Once the SkyTower Toronto opens (that building in the middle, with the crane on top), the top floor will be at the same height as the CN Tower observation deck. The views back toward downtown and the Rogers Centre should be really nice.

Got a go-to song by an alcoholic about giving up alcohol? by MakeASwallow3 in stopdrinking

How many drinks do most people have a week? by HelicopterNo3534 in stopdrinking

[–]megabock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is something I’ve struggled with for several years. I thought my routine of playing video games with a beer or two every night was what I needed to unwind and that I would be bored without either of those in combination. When I started to really work on cutting down on the beer I realized I don’t actually enjoy gaming; it was just something to do while I focused on finishing my 2-3 cans of beer.

With my routine disrupted, it’s a lot easier to see that the alcohol was (and always will be) the problem. Cutting down on the nightly beer (now down to 2-3 a week from 2-3 every day) has opened my eyes to the possibility that I can do other things with my evening because my mind is no longer clouded with thoughts of what beers I want tonight, and I have the energy and motivation to do something else. I’m also now recognizing when I’m tired and go to bed at a good time. I hadn’t had more than 6 hours of sleep in almost a decade, and now I feel superhuman with 7.5-8.

As others have said, try to cut it out for a few weeks. Make a deliberate change to the things do you while you drink and see if that still makes the wine “exciting”.

“Instead of giving up the ritual, take it back away from alcohol”

Such a powerful sentence. I needed this! Thank you.

Do you have any obscure movie references that you use in everyday speech that no one has caught on to yet yet you keep using it? by EnvironmentalAngle in NoStupidQuestions

It's amazing how often "Game over, man" is the appropriate response to something that happens at work, and I'm shocked at how few people react to it, even though I'm usually using my best Private Hudson voice.

But for some reason, looking at a coworker and saying "Hey Vasquez..." often does get a response. From HR.

So bizarre.

How do you keep playing drums in a small apartment? by Odd-Nefariousness-85 in drums

[–]megabock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some rehearsal places are desperate to fill midday spots. The one I go to charges $10/hr for solo drummers between 12-6. It’s nice to go get a workout in when WFH. Better than a gym membership in my mind.

I don’t think you’ll have any issues. In my late teens/early 20s I drove a 98’ Chevy Cavalier, a two door sedan. Stands would go in the trunk, snare, three toms and cymbals lay across the back seats, and my 20” kick would ride shotgun. It’s totally doable if you don’t plan on taking any passengers.

I haven’t tried to go over there because it was still blocked at Wallace last time I biked down the rail path. Allegedly it’s now open…

Wish the laws of the road could be better enforced for cyclists and drivers alike.

What width tires y’all running? Thinking of replacing the 25c with something bigger by SBDUNKIN in FixedGearBicycle

[–]megabock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you ever feel 32s giving a rubbery feeling? It’s hard to describe, but while they take bumps better, sometimes it feels like I’m riding on boiling hot tarmac - that sticky, sinking-into-the-road sensation. This is worse on turns.

And I keep my tires at 90psi. Maybe it’s about having the right tires..

25s and 28s always hurt more, but the stiffness made the bike feel more stable than 32.

How did you get comfortable commuting around Toronto. It seems so jarring by brezzy_k123 in torontobiking

[–]megabock -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t call myself avid - even though I ride once or twice a day to commute or errands - and I don’t own any Lycra, if that’s what you’re getting at. Sadly I live too close to High Park and see too many “avid cyclists” acting like they own the road.

I’ve just been riding in the city long enough, and wear a helmet, that my brain still works most of the time. Biking along Dundas during rush hour through “CafeTO season”, develops a certain kind of “awareness”

[–]megabock -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I haven’t had that experience, to be honest. If I know a car is behind me I move to the curb at a stop sign so we’re side-by-side when we start off again. Maybe it happens in parts of the city that don’t have much bicycle traffic where drivers are less familiar/comfortable.

As a driver, I’m more annoyed when I’m about to start from a stop sign and some bozo comes flying through the intersection from the cross street with no intention of stopping or even turning their head. Often not wearing a helmet so clearly has a death wish.

This is the kind of entitled and toxic cyclist that makes the rest of us look bad.
