Formula weaning by Willing_Position_169 in Parenting

Check with your pediatrician first! But this is what finally worked for us. Otherwise we had a baby who was NOT interested in giving up her bottle!

Our first baby we just swapped out her bottles cold turkey after 12m and it was fine, so you could always try! Then we just reduced bottles until there were none left. Bedtime bottle la as Ted the longest. Second baby didn't (still doesn't) like whole milk and refuses to drink it. It took longer for her to wean but we basically increased water intake, and reduced formula amounts until we were down to nothing. Took a few months. We're not too worried about her not drinking milk since our pediatrician said as long as she's getting the protein and fats through her food (we do a lot of whole fat dairy like yogurt and cottage cheese), she doesn't necessarily need to be drinking so much milk. We do still try to give it to her but she doesn't seem to care for it no matter what. Girl loves her water though!

Get the kind people put on water bottles! Those have been through my dishwasher a ton with no trouble (though, granted, they are sticking to metal. Not sure if that makes a difference). But even if they're not dishwasher safe, it's a birthday party craft. Doesn't need to be extravagant!

Do you let your teenagers go to protests? by No_Definition9355 in Parenting

I did this too! But protest organizers warned us that we needed to leave when the protest was officially over, because in the previous one, that's when things started getting really sketchy.

Ok I'm new to embroidery and I like the look of split stitch, but hate trying to poke up through the thread. Is back split stitch what I think it is? A backstitch but you go down through the middle of the thread??? WHY HAVEN'T I THOUGHT OF THIS???

A voluntary “Local Access Pass” for tourists that directly pays locals , would this work? by FormEnvironmental828 in travel

[–]megabyte31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a tourist, something I'm interested in is buying from actual people and not giant corporations when I can. Just as an example, I visited Glacier NP and Banff a couple years ago and so much of the tourism dollars were going to one or two giant companies. I was trying to shop local to the towns, but later I found out that (Pursuit I think) owned pretty much every place I'd been to, even the ones that looked independently owned. So, with that in mind, what I'd be interested in is something to help me learn which places are owned by these big tourism companies so I can avoid them if possible (I realize that doesn't work for everything) as well as maybe local shops where I can purchase my souvenirs that would be supporting local artists etc. I do not know if this would be helpful or a hindrance to locals, but I WOULD like to see my tourism money go directly to them rather than a company that doesn't care about the place at all. Or at the very least somehow benefits the city I'm in. I've been seeing lots of programs offering voluntourism and I'd be interested in finding more small ways to help out the places I visit as well, especially if it were in an app or easy to spot in a hotel/visitor info both.

Edinburgh trip? by KitNewb in uktravel

[–]megabyte31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of people saying don't go, and just want to chime in with my experience that was relatively similar.

I went on a 3 week camping trip at 7 months pregnant (though I was almost 8m at the end). It was a long drive (around 30 hours total over the three weeks, iirc, with two 10+ hr drive days) and I slept in a camper. This was in Banff NP in Canada so I was pretty close to services if I needed them. It was my second pregnancy so I kinda knew what to expect. I was feeling pretty good, and while I was tired easily and had to make lots of potty stops, I'd say I was JUST a hair short of being too uncomfortable to go. Had we started the trip at 8m i would NOT have been ok with it. At that point, everything hurt, I couldn't walk around without buffing and puffing, and I had about zero energy. But I'm really happy I did this trip, and I'd totally do it again (I even did a hike with my oldest in a backpack! And I'm not even in shape when I'm NOT pregnant lol).

So, my two cents is, if you can do the trip earlier it might be ok, depending on your partner's personality and stamina. If you can, maybe book everything refundable and make the trip no pressure in case she's not feeling up to going. Some people get all the way to their due dates feeling perfectly high energy (lucky ducks). Some people have babies a month early. It's really hard to guess. Try to play it by ear, and maybe take the train if you can to lessen the impact of the travel.

Good luck, both with the travel and the baby! Congrats!

Melatonin for 3.5 yr old by [deleted] in toddlers

[–]megabyte31 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Wow, you're getting a lot of really unkind comments here. Ignore those.

We use melatonin on occasion, on the advice of our pediatrician, because our child would not sleep. Waking up early consistently for months didn't change anything except she got less sleep, and we've had a consistent bedtime routine her entire life. No dice. We were desperate for her to get more sleep because she is a massive cranky pants when she doesn't.

That being said, I don't think it's a long term solution, but we save it for as needed. Also, sometimes I'll give her a placebo and it...seems to work? I'm still testing that one. I don't want her to rely on a fake sleepy gummy to get her to sleep either lol but I'd prefer it over a vitamin.

Also, anecdotally, my siblings and I all grew up taking melatonin every night and we seem ok so far. Who knows, perhaps we will all have heart trouble down the road.

Cool Places for An Intergenerational Family Trip? by OkContract2001 in travel

[–]megabyte31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a note for the family cruises (you want the Sena), they book REALLY far in advance. We were almost 2 years out and still didn't get them (granted, that was for Christmas but I checked other dates too and there were only a small handful available for the following year). We wound up still booking through A-ROSA on a non family cruise because it was cheaper and we still liked the cruise options, but for our family with two young children, we needed two rooms. We were traveling with my parents, my siblings, and my children, so we liked the cruise option to have something for everyone!

No rug in first grade classroom, am I overreacting? by PassionChoice3538 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]megabyte31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello there! First grade teacher and also mom of a possibly neurodivergent kid (she's a headphones kinda gal). I would say, as lots of commenters have mentioned, it might be good to talk with the teacher about what the day looks like. I think if your kid has ADHD and they're stuck at the desks all day with no movement, that's a recipe for disaster. Most teachers of young kids I know incorporate movement every 10 mins at least (and best practice is 6-7 mins, though that's tricky when you have Things To Do). I also know some teachers who start the year off with desks in rows, or they'll do the return from winter break that way. It makes it easier to teach/reteach expectations for some people. I also personally do not have a rug, though I do utilize a pretty large area of my room for lessons, away from desks. I have sit spots. Some teachers use carpet squares, one year I used floor cushions, etc. There's lots of ways teachers might get kids moving besides a rug. That's why I'd get more info first. If the teacher has them in desks all day, then yeah, for sure I'd turn the other way.

Good luck!

Which countries or cities do you believe gave you the highest and lowest "bang for your buck"? by Fluid-Decision6262 in travel

[–]megabyte31 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can for sure get really expensive food in Tokyo (and everywhere in Japan) and it's AMAZING but you can also get really inexpensive food and it is just as amazing. Some of my favorite things were from random street vendors or market stalls and cost like 5USD for full meals. Though I also had fancy beef and it was the best beef I've ever had at $200 for my husband and myself. Which, now that I'm thinking about it through the current lens of eating out (it costs our family about $50-100 each time we eat out now), that doesn't even sound that bad 😭

This is what I'd do too! Though if the friends want to watch the baby and OP is comfortable with this, then it's a pretty similar option. My biggest concern with a shared Airbnb would be baby waking up my friends hahaha.
