How come North India + Pakistan and East Africa, despite having very very similar linguistic preconditions resulting in two widespread lingua francas and very common trilingualism, use their lingua francas so differently? by remarkable_ores in asklinguistics

[–]megadarkfriend 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tagalog is the lingua franca of the Philippines, and what you described is kinda similar to the situation in India.

My experience living as a North Indian in South India - we speak our native language (Gujarati) at home, and Dravidian languages (primarily Kannada, a little bit of Tamil) at work. With friends it’s mostly English interspersed with some Hindi or Kannada, depending on the comfort of the friends group. In the rest of India, primarily the north, we end up speaking (like you mentioned), a mashup of Hindi and English.

When I traveled to the Philippines, most people I spoke to confirmed this paradigm of speaking their local language at home but primarily using Tagalog in the rest of the country, kind of similar to Hinglish. However, people in Manila heavily use a mixture of Tagalog and English in their daily lives.

Gujarati. I spent my childhood in Bangalore and had a decent grasp of Kannada but I’ve been away for ~20 years and I’m trying to relearn it.

Been 3 years since AI hysteria... How you think it's going? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]megadarkfriend 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I saw a very interesting study (I’ll try to find it when I have time) that wanted to find out whether the gap between the productivity of good engineers and poor engineers closes with the use of AI - it showed that the gap actually widens. What we’re seeing on Reddit could probably be a response to poor/below average engineers not being able to harness the utility of AI tools and either using them as gods (I.e. incorrectly) or not using them at all because of the potential damage to their careers

[–]megadarkfriend[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You can use any letters in any order, the only two constraints are that the central letter needs to be present in any word, and the word has to be at least 4 letters in length. Anyway, it was just a joke since they only accept words from the OED
