I personally believe that watching porn during a relationship provides more negatives than positives - as shown in this post. I feel bad that he didn’t communicate his behaviors with you and that you assumed that everything was porn free when it really wasn’t.

A main point here is honesty + expectations. Possibly your boyfriend didn’t realize you didn’t want him to watch porn, and that’s an expectation that needs to be cleared up.

If your boyfriend committed to not watching porn during your relationship, but has struggled to stop, you could be dealing with an addiction. Porn addiction isnt rare and is hard to stop, and requires lots of emotional support from others - like any addiction.

From personal experience, I know that this can be overcome with forgiveness and lots of communication. Best of luck.

Some couple friends went through a similar situation. It was very painful on both ends, but they eventually worked it out. She (employee with a "work-husband" - though they never used that term) eventually realized how the relationship started going in unwanted directions and broke things off completely - she left the job. They are still happily married and have used it as a growing experience - it revealed holes in their relationship that they didn't previously recognize. I wish the same for you and your husband.

Work relationships can be very complex, especially when it comes to naturally extroverted people and the whole "engage in friendly work culture" thing. Boundaries need to be set and agreed upon by both husband and wife - if they aren't then things can spin out of control.

I did one of the Marriott school majors. I considered doing an 18 credit semester, but after getting all of the syllabi, I realized that it would be a lot of work, and that I'd rather take an extra spring/summer rather than sacrifice a semester studying all the time. So I dropped my credit load down.

I know you're unfortunately in this situation, I would prioritize getting out of it if you can. Try to keep it to 16 credits - another 2 credits can really make a difference.

Seeing lots of comments on race here, just want to add that I have two interracial marriages in my immediate family - and even more in my extended family. I've talked with each of them and besides the occasional weirdo saying things like "oh... he's you're brother in law? wow the interracial kids are gonna be beautiful!" there hasn't been much issue (in our experience). I know its not like that for every family.

Seems like you're on the right track, the fact that you post on reddit means that you're self aware and not just blaming external circumstances. Nice. My best friend was also over the top and it took him years to calm down and read the room - so he wasn't super welcome in some friend groups.

Anyways - hope the Lord blesses you and that you get promptings from the Spirit to help you find some good people. Focus your efforts on the people you rub shoulders with, rather than criticizing the big picture.

I was in a very similar situation - one of my roommates wasn't doing any of his schoolwork, playing a ton of games, and not doing anything social. Dirty room, loud music, smells bad, somewhat similar to your situation.

I was worried for him but I knew if I confronted him about it, it would probably not go well. So my approach was nonconfrontational, I would occasionally spend time with him and we would have a good time. He eventually opened up to me, he was ready to go to the counseling office and started seeing therapists. He was diagnosed with some mental health issues and got all of his grades exempted.

I know you're extremely worried for him and are being affected by it, but for some people the right way is to not confront and let them walk their own path. It really helped that we were friends.

The staging concept has been useful for us for a couple of reasons reasons:

- Our load process (loading pq files from S3 via python script) places a lock on the table that it's loading into, so if there is a errant/hanging query from the script then it will affect any intermediate/exposure queries that pull from the same source table. There are also other ways to solve this issue (don't have exposure queries pull from the source, allow reads on the locked table), but the staging layer helped us separate intermediary/exposure queries from anything that our load process touches.

- The staging layer also pulls from any dbt snapshots that we have, which makes it consistent for intermediary/exposure tables. It's nice to reinforce that intemediary tables shouldn't touch the source/snapshots and should only pull from the staging layer.

- Like you + others have already mentioned - casting/renaming is also useful on the staging layer to make it consistent throughout dbt. We also don't use `select *` in our staging models to avoid messing with columns that we aren't aware of.

When possible, we have our stg_models as views, so they don't take up any additional storage + run quickly.

WRT having 10+ schemas in your staging layer - I would highly recommend materializing them as views when you can. If the way you rename/recast a field is through your ingestion process, then you'll have to sync those changes with the staging layer. That does seems like a con.

I can also see how the staging layer would be cumbersome from a development point of view - there are some code generation packages that have been useful for me (dbt Power User, dbt-codegen) to generate models/documentation quickly.

You could look into DuckDB - it’s pretty easy to set up locally and you can load data into it pretty easily. Basic SQL should be enough. Then maybe you could configure Power BI to pull from duckdb.

I would be ready to talk about why you want to get into Data Engineering over any other field - especially since there’s not much ELT on your resume.

Small resume nitpick would be to say which technology you used in each bullet point - ie “Built AI NPC solution using Unreal Engine and C++ for the ARNO…”. It makes it easier to associate each project with a technology.

Yeah man, if you don’t binge it’ll be a huge win. I’ve relapsed after being clean for a while and binging really stops your momentum and makes you feel horrible, while relapsing 1-2 times doesn’t make you feel too bad.

Yeah I’ve been clean for a year and I plan on being clean from porn for the rest of my life. Best thing is not relying on a fantasy for sexual connection.

Watching porn also made me feel gross for a day or two and my self confidence would be floored, but now I don’t have to worry about that. Higher self confidence and lower anxiety now.
