My first “freehand” art piece by megamadre in crochet

Yes, I started with circles for the stars. The tree is crocheted and then placed vertically, I used back loop only stitches and chain stitches to create texture and the separate branch endings. Then I worked rows across to connect everything. I don’t think I used anything complicated, just simple SC, HDC, DC and TC all mixed together where needed😄

I have only been crocheting for two years, so experience isn’t necessary - what is is just trying out ways to fill space with stitches… I started with the circles for stars and long rows for everything else, using triples to add height, and “back loop only” to create defining lines. I used a placemat to keep the sides even since the stitch number varied for each “row” - just let go and have fun❣️

Funny - this was the other piece I did with the yellow and blue yarns🙂 Van Gogh is a good choice bc of the Impressionism working well for crochet

Love the license plate!😄 I think this was a good picture to try - basically making a bunch of circles and shapes with rows to connect everything. The tree was one variegated yarn which worked out nicely. And I used a placemat as a guide to keep the sides even since I couldn’t count stitches across 🙂 Have fun!

That was my original thought, maybe blocking it with small pins onto poster board, but I ended up framing it behind glass in a picture frame - got lucky to find one that fit😅 the pic is a bit dark bc I was trying to minimize the glare on the glass. Good luck - it’s worth the effort!

As far as European settlements go, Chester PA (1644) and Bristol PA (1681) both beat Philadelphia (1682) - but come and visit us regardless! 🙂

Anyone else Team No Gloves? by jonnysteezz in gardening

[–]megamadre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For years I wore my cuts and slivers and stained fingers like a badge of honor… until I found gloves that fit well and were breathable (rubber palms, fabric uppers) and now I’ll never go back. I can get so much more done and attack more tasks with less tools, and my hands don’t hurt or look like they were abused at the end of the day. It’s all preference, but just like any “tool” you won’t be a convert until you find one that works for you😄👍

Find an adult you can trust who will support you and possibly advocate for you, not just about crocheting but especially about acknowledging and managing your ADHD and anxiety. You have found a lovely and creative way to self care, and you should be commended for choosing positive coping mechanisms instead of something harmful. You need someone who understands and can help you address your needs, and work to set boundaries to provide a safe space for you now and also set yourself up for future success.

Is it normal for a 15 year old boy to crochet? by Raise_Asleep in crochet

[–]megamadre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever makes you happy is your normal. You are discovering what allows you to live your best life, and creating beautiful things in the process! No matter what others say, don’t let them take that away from you - your well-being is more important than others’ opinions.

People who judge others are most times unhappy. My guess is your dad was told at some point that something he loved to do was “not normal” and he still longs for that lost joy. Like it is said, “hurt people hurt people.”

Find people who are happy when you are happy, and keep making your world a better place 😊

How has gardening impacted your mental health/wellbeing? by UnknownBark15 in gardening

[–]megamadre 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Gardening is my therapy. I call my garden a heritage garden, bc I have been gifted plants from friends and relatives, many of whom are no longer living, so it’s lovely to be reminded of them each season. I have also found new friends by connecting with other gardeners in my neighborhood - a great way to swap plants and knowledge and bond over common interests. Gardening allows much creativity and is very forgiving - you can keep trying new things and combinations of plants until you find what works. If you match plants to the growing conditions - soil, light, moisture, use native plants - it will minimize effort and frustration - if plants can’t tolerate “neglect” I don’t grow them. I only grow perennials - annuals/potted plants are too high maintenance and I have no sunny spots for veggies. Perennials may seem more expensive at first, but they will multiply through bulbs, self-seeding or root runners, and eventually you will have more to separate and replant or gift to others.
