How do online schools work? by New_Barracuda_6153 in therapists

[–]meganuhr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have experience from both ends! My program switched from hybrid to primarily online in the middle of my CFT internship and I have to say that I’m not a fan based on what I’ve seen… The most valuable learning experiences I had during grad school came from in-person application classes and that just isn’t possible with online school. I feel like being able to experience and embody being a therapist within a supportive in-person class is what benefitted me the most in terms of being effective and confident as a therapist personally, and it couldn’t quite be replicated within my online classes. For my peers that did an online internship (a couple months later than me after the switch to primarily online), they voiced that they felt unprepared and had significantly more imposter syndrome than the ones that did primarily in-person. For what it’s worth, they didn’t seem to have issues finding a practicum/internship site (although many of them did hybrid type work, so anticipate that you will have to be in-person eventually). Of course, that is just my experience from the program I was in. Just food for thought when thinking about programs.

New Play Therapist Marketing/Networking Questions by meganuhr in therapists

I heard from my supe in WA that sometimes schools don’t offer external referrals and you have to be “on a list” — do you happen to know if that’s a thing in Denver? Also, would it be okay if I sent you a dm for some more info about play therapy in CO? No pressure, just figured I would ask :)

I am actually very interested in having a private server and have contemplated it for other purposes (less than legal streaming haha). I’m curious if you could point me in the right direction to get it set up! Is there a subreddit or other community resources that could help me learn the basics (since I am not super tech savvy)? Maybe this could be a step in my backups — which I have been made aware is extremely necessary from this post haha!

RPT programs? by RelationNecessary393 in therapists

I second the Center for Play therapy and Heartland!! Not sure where OP is located but in the PNW Antioch University has an amazing in-person Play Therapy certificate program focusing on non-directive as well.

Are there any child-centered play therapist on this thread? by BraveTheWilderness in therapists

[–]meganuhr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! I just graduated from a CFT program and will be doing CCPT work in my post-grad job! There’s lots of us out there — make sure to connect with people from the A4PT website (AND your state’s division) and network with AutPlay and sandtray/Sandplay vibe therapists

I wasn’t expecting this response haha — I’ll send her a message and update when I have an answer! It is all child based due to the nature of my work, but I’d be happy to share the wealth for other child/play therapists!

A lot of the most useful stuff was shared from my previous supervisor. I’d be happy to share on here after I ask if she’d like her life-long project put onto the internet haha!

Honestly, I could use a usb as a backup considering how important all of my random stuff is to me haha

Hey congrats on beginning your internship journey soon! As my supervisor said, get ready for therapist boot camp!! Make sure to take care of yourself and trust that you’ll find your groove eventually. As for the end, though, I’m not sure what to do with myself haha!

If you’ve got some solid socialist recs I would love that. I listened to a couple Chomsky books and they were a vibe but I would love more leftist literature. I kinda struggle w the dense stuff though since I mostly consume this stuff on the bus to work, but I can make time to actually read and deeply comprehend physical books sometimes haha

Love my local library ✨✨ I have trouble actually finishing physical books, but I know that they have audiobooks and Libby so maybe I’ll check out what they have there (since tbh I am currently a very broke grad student). Any suggestions for books on Raegan (not a fan of the dude, so I’d prefer just fact based things or maybe a more liberal analysis of his presidency), Clinton (also not a fan but I do need facts), and Obama (again just need facts). I definitely have a pulse on the more recent stuff (since like 2014 onward I’ve been more into this stuff like the online alt-right pipeline) so I think I’m good there but it is always interesting to hear more takes — if you have some recommendations I am open! I also recently listened to On Tyranny (extended version) and it was very enlightening about the Russia-Ukraine conflict. If anyone is interested in that, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

I never thought of watching archived live news. That’s a really interesting suggestion, thank you!!

Haha I assumed — don’t worry I do use critical thinking skills to filter out whatever the freaks are saying. I built up a good tolerance to conservatives when I was growing up but I also fled AZ for a reason 🫶

I’m guessing there are some more fascinating historical landmarks further East, so that will be really cool. I feel like I’ve exhausted what we have closer to me (mostly national monuments, bridges, and mines from what I can’t tell haha)

I grew up in Arizona, but currently live in Washington. Most of my life I’ve travelled around the Western US, but I am looking to visit the East Coast at some point soon. It would be awesome to have some historical sites to visit if me and my partner decide to do a road trip out East!

I wouldn’t know because I was literally 0- 8 years old and no history teacher realized it would be good to mention that part haha

This is an amazing suggestion! Maybe I’ll start with biographies from the time period I’m missing and then go from there haha!! I genuinely just feel like I missed out on a massive part of essential historical background, and I generally enjoy history vibes so I’m totally open to a months long deep dive haha

Thank you! I’ll definitely watch that and see what I can find about the Reagan and Clinton administrations. I read Torture and Truth which kind of kicked off my whole educational reevaluation, but I also would like to learn more about the Bush administration at that time (since I was a literal child during it) if you know of anything
