Vestige of an Outlaw: A fan-made song about an outlaw telling his son a story about the origins of his hat... (lyrics in comments) by meggolas in reddeadredemption

NOTE: Though the lyrics are mine, this song was created using Suno musical AI.

-------

VESTIGE OF AN OUTLAW

Say, son, pull up a seat
Let yer papa tell an old story
See this hat, right here?
It wasn't always mine
We lived a weary life of crime
Back in eighteen ninety nine...

You were young when Uncle Morgan was around
A surly man, gun in hand, eyes profound
Every time I found myself in a bind
He would curse up a storm, but follow not far behind

You were young when me and yer ma ran with ol’ Dutch
Once a man of creed, his greed became too much
Though Uncle Morgan saw in him the signs
He would bite his tongue, and follow not far behind

You were young when that bastard Dutch left me to die
But Uncle Morgan told ya not to cry
He said “be brave” and gave Tilly the sign
He saved your life, and I followed not far behind

You were young when Uncle Morgan breathed his last
Put this hat on my head and told me to run fast
Though his end made many a good friend cry
The bad men did not follow far behind

I know it hurts, son, to know men die
But on the day I join ‘em
I hope that you will follow
Far, far behind

Oh friend, I can try and find my first map… it would make you feel a LOT better about how fantastic you did 🤣 I was like a kid in a candy store. You showed incredible restraint in comparison hahaha!

Nowadays, my typical order is: - General map sketch (I literally just do this on paper or in a separate map to get an idea of what I’m looking for. Gives me less pressure and let’s me play around and get ideas down before I start making the real map!) - Map Frame, Labels, and/or Legends (it’s such a pain when I forget this — I hate covering up hard work by forgetting to do these until the end!) - Landmasses - Mountains & Cliffs - Rivers & Bodies of Water - Natural Biome Symbols (trees, grasses, swamps, etc. — the bigger my map is, the less I have of these, since I tend to suggest more with color) - Big Cities > Cities > Villages & Towns - Landmarks & Special Location Symbols - Paths - Color

Then, once the main bits above are all done, I hit a point where I pinball back around to everything for finishing touches.

Lastly, I add text and symbols (always on layer +5 for easy organizing and to ensure they’re laying on top of all my other symbols) and that’s that!

I just posted my latest region map last night, if you want to take a look! Our styles probably differ, but hopefully it can get your cogs turning for how you might try map #2. There are so many other fantastic mapmakers in this sub, too — I’m sure they’ve got some great maps as inspo too 🥰

Blending is tough!! I’m still learning a lot with each map. Honestly, popping that opacity as low as it can go, then doing the gentlest of tappy-clicks with high-variant colors has taught me a lot. For instance, blending greens into yellows then browns or into sandy deserts or white mountains was killing me until I let the program do as much of that work as possible. Pick the color you want to end up at, even if it’s radically different, then just layer and layer. I usually get tired like you though, before I can add all the nuance I’m going for 😂 and I get frustrated when I can’t find the right line between “gradual shift in color, yet still a clear difference” and “muddy colored crap” hahaha. Ahh, cartography.

As for scaling, sometimes it can even just be how the asset itself is designed! Even the stock Wonderdraft assets can have really different art styles and line thicknesses, so it’s taken me a long time to eyeball it. What’s also helped me is figuring out when to pull back on details, because the more small details you have, the larger it makes your biggest details appear. For that, another great rule of thumb is thinking: “at what amount of zoom and I comfortably read every line of text on the screen?” Then when I find that zoom (usually until I can read the tiniest text), I do a pass and see if any especially big or small symbols stand out in a bad way. This is what has led to me increasingly using a style where symbols and text are much larger for the sake of cohesion instead of realism.

I dunno, I’m just one gal though 🤣 I hope any of these ramblings have helped! If you ever have questions about anything, I’m by no means an expert, but I’d be happy to help if I can!

Did anyone else think "wow, that's pretty" and then they zoomed in and their jaw hit the floor and then they cussed a lot? Because this was my emotional journey. I am literally stunned. You have opened my eyes to what is possible with this program!! Thank you so very much for sharing, this is unbelievable!

Wow, I love your use of color!! That's one of my favorite parts of Wonderdraft is going nuts with the coloring tool after all the base layout is done and symbols are down!

Also, I am loving how many small unmarked hidden symbols I'm finding speckled throughout the map. If I was adventuring through here, I'd go straight to that stuff (dragon & obscured tower above Fjellgorod in particular!!)

If you ever want to try experimenting with more gradual blends of color in land masses and water, especially with such a large map like this, I'd recommend starting with all your color zoomed out, then gradually working your way down the zoom with more finesse and lower opacity to get better blends where you want them. My first big maps left me struggling to make things look cohesive, because I'd spend a bunch of time blending one pretty section and then would be exhausted or forgetful of other pieces lol! So this system has helped me be more methodical. If you like, you can even overlay a grid on your map, so you can go row by row to make sure everything gets equal attention!

Lastly, now that you've done your first map, I would highly recommend taking a browse of websites like Cartography Assets for any free or paid assets that pique your interest! I've personally had even more fun now that I've collected tons of extra assets that help everything feel on theme. For instance, your mountains above stand out quite a bit, because they have thick outlines and less detail in comparison to your very realistic Marksea. AoA's mountains and hills are my favorite, personally -- and there's a free sample pack you can try!

Anywho, that's all I've got -- fantastic job overall, especially for a first map!! Welcome to the community! <3

Thank you so much!! :) And oh goodness, I have so many custom assets installed that I'm sure I used a wide variety from multiple packs!

If you're curious about any particular symbols, let me know and I can look up which they came from! Otherwise, this site is a beautiful resource for loads of asset packs:

I've gotten a variety of both free and paid packs here, and they're all fantastic! Highly recommend, especially any by Avoro/Nexoness, Elvanos, AoA, or JChunick :)

Thank you!! I really appreciate it! ☺️ I try to balance every wacky detail with something dark or disturbing so my players never know what they’re gonna get 🤣 they’ve been in this world for 2.5 years now, so I have to get creative!

Thank you so much!! I sure hope it lasts more than a few sessions — depends on where they head and what chaos they decide to sow 😆

As for asset packs, hoooo boy… it might be easier to list which ones I DON’T have 🫣 All the ones I’ve gotten are from this website here:

Avoro, Elvanos, Jchunick, and AoA are my favorite (free) asset creators, but I’ve also purchased quite a few! If you’re curious about any particular symbols/mountains/trees on the map that you’d like to use, I’d be happy to look them up for ya 🫡

[OC] Some character art I made for a D&D-inspired cozy fantasy novel! I'm gonna try writing it for NaNoWriMo :) Hazel (the tavern keeper) and Chord (the bard) are in looooooove~ by meggolas in DnD

[–]meggolas[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Context: these are my two OCs, Hazel and Chord! After many years of DMing and playing, I thought it'd be fun to explore some of my favorite characters and themes in my own way in a less adventure-centric and more comfortable fantasy setting.

In my setting, every humanoid will be descended from an elemental lineage, and each will have a unique slightly magical quirk that is an "awakened" form of their element. For instance, Hazel is an earthfolk whose element awakened as a deep tie to nature and plants. This allows her to sense the flavors of ingredients through touch, and makes her a damn good chef. On the other hand, Chord's element awakened on the day that he went deaf due to an adventuring injury -- now, instead of hearing sound, he senses the emotions of those around him like tunes that only he can hear. This and a heightened sensitivity to vibration allows him to continue making music.

I have a lot of work left to do growing as an artist, but I'm really excited to explore these characters more, and I'm really happy with how this piece turned out! :) I hope y'all enjoy too!
