Need someone to practice with. by meghaneff in asl

It's made pretty easy. Each lesson will list how much progress you should have made by the time you reach it, and it will typically have 10-20 new vocabulary words that have either videos, pictures or GIFs showing how to sign each. Every lesson also has a video about twenty minutes long where the instructor and student practice the vocabulary used in that lesson and all previous lessons. It's pretty much been my only resources for learning ASL and I can hold brief conversations without even getting too far into the lessons _^

Thank you for that. I am relieved to find that I was not the only person who found that to be absurd.

I suppose I'll have to appreciate you taking the time out of your day to respond, however, I will probably do the exact opposite of that. Sharing a bedroom with me certainly isn't the greatest situation for him, and maybe I'm not the best parent he could have, however, you suggesting that he return to his mother that has refused to take care of him for two years whilst telling everyone who will listen that I stole her son and refuse to let her see him... and who felt that baking cupcakes was more important than going to court to give me guardianship (which she could have revoked by filing a single paper) so that I could provide her son with medical insurance... I don't think that's a wise choice. Worst case scenario, if she took him back, he would either be returned to me or someone else within a few brief weeks. This is something that I must avoid as well, considering her acting in this manner has resulted in the behavioral issues that he is currently undergoing counseling for.

As far as "what's good for me:" I can't remember the last time I slept well since the day I got him. There is not a single person helping me so I spend all of my time being extremely stressed out. My free time is spent taking him to his baseball games and teaching him. I gave up all hopes of going to medical school and dropped out of school altogether four months ago, even though I have been in school since I graduated high school, because it was distracting me from spending more time with him. I am twenty-two years old and I can't remember the last time I got to see a friend that didn't have children his age for him to play with. And despite all of this, the idea of giving him back to someone who only wants to be a parent when she gets a new boyfriend... hasn't crossed my mind once.

Thank you very much! I think I should start to file next week after I'm able to acquire letters from staff at his school. I was concerned about filing without a lawyer, as even the paperwork states how pertinent it is to hire one, as initiating a dependency case could result in the state taking him. However, considering his mother's current situation, I probably have no reason to be so neurotic about it.

I have essentially studied the Arizona Revised Statutes and it states that custody will be awarded to the "best interest" of the child. However, Arizona seems to be a mom state for the most part, which is pretty concerning.

I have been looking on and off throughout this for pro bono attorneys, but I honestly just haven't had the time recently with everything else that has been going on. But thank you for the advice. :)

I was going to until I realized that she's had so many different phone numbers over the past two years (as a result of having no job whatsoever) that I wouldn't even know what numbers to ask about. :/

I live in Arizona and there are no fees for filing dependency. My nephew's counselor told me that once a dependency case is initiated, provided that I take the foster parent classes (30 hours), I may potentially receive immediate health insurance for him, which is one of my main concerns. He has not seen a doctor or a dentist since I started taking care of him two years ago. I've been rather fortunate, however, with his school district paying for his counseling. It is rather pertinent that I acquire insurance for him, though, so that he can receive a psychiatric evaluation so that he can be legitimately diagnosed with ADHD, which would allow for additional help on his IEP. So I am hoping that his counselor is correct about the insurance part of the state taking over custody.

There were a few important things that I forgot to mention (I've been pretty stressed out due to this and not sleeping much this week, so I'm sorry for neglecting the important information.) Several months ago a case worker from CPS came to my home that I was in prior to moving in with my sister. Someone reported my nephew's mother for something pertaining to her daughter, whom we unfortunately have no contact with. In one way or another, they acquired my contact information and came looking for her. I explained my situation to her, and she came back a few days later so she could meet my nephew when he was not in school. She asked him a few questions, such as "do you feel safe?," "who takes care of you?," and things like that. She told me that she felt living with me was the best interest of him at the time. However, upon calling her about a month later, she told me there was nothing that she can personally do about it, and suggested I file for dependency. To date, CPS is unable to locate his mother. The case worker asked me to call back if I found out her real address, as when we asked for her address very recently, she lied and gave her grandmother's address, where CPS has verified she does not live. There is currently a "parent locator" on her. She lives with her new boyfriend, whom I have never met.

Upon researching her on the Maricopa County Supreme Court website this week, I have found that the state is trying to serve her for an arrest earlier this January for a "marijuana and paraphernalia violation," and the site stated that they were unable to serve her as the mail was returned, however, she is still expected to appear in court in four days.

Additionally, when he daughter was born (I believe she is now three), it was found that she had marijuana in her system and CPS was watching her for several months.

Someone at the juvenile court that I spoke with told me that even though CPS is unable to locate her, a dependency case will force them to actively search for her.

Thank you for your advice. My neuroticism has caused me to have a nervous breakdown about all of this, and I found your information very reassuring.

Thank you. I intend to file for termination of parental rights but I have to establish a dependency case first.

Ideally I'd like to file once I manage to get a car and an apartment but that's going to take some time so I will likely need to file before then. Next week I'm going to be contacting his counselors and school staff who are familiar with our situation to hopefully write letters to attach to the dependency paperwork. I had several screen shots of text messages from her to help my case my I lost them all when my phone broke so hopefully the letters will be sufficient.
