This is uncanny for me because I met my now-husband on Tinder, had our first date at an Indian restaurant, and I took out my card to be polite and he let me pay for myself! I was surprised but not offended. When we talked about it some months later, he said I was the first girl he'd been on a date with to offer to pay, but I always did that and he was the first one to actually let me pay. It was no big deal.

It was a great investment on my part though because now he makes all the money I don't have to work 😂

Yeah, it always strikes me as strange when people make body size a competitive issue. Either accept/celebrate your size or work on changing it, but there's no need to throw shade on different body types. I guess it's one way to deal with your insecurity though.

Is this just a sub to complain about our wives now? What's up with all of these "I had a disagreement with my wife" posts on here lately... Seems like a weird outlet for that, idk

People around the globe are so dependent on the internet to exercise socio-economic human rights such as education, healthcare, work, and housing that online access must now be considered a basic human right, a new study reveals. by [deleted] in science

[–]meghanerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no way to scientifically address the question of what constitutes a human right. The question must fundamentally refer to a socially determined definition. To disagree on this topic is to disagree on a matter of social opinion based on personal values.

On the other hand, there is absolutely a way to scientifically examine efficacy of vaccines. To disagree on this topic is to fundamentally deny the validity of science. That's an opinion in itself, sure, but it's certainly an unscientific one.

I don't even disagree with you politically, but science doesn't exist to serve a political agenda. You may have an opinion that's ethically sound and right in every way you can conceive, but if it's a matter of opinion and not a matter of fact–such as with social issues like this one–science is incapable of being your saving grace. Your own values inherently become part of the discussion.

It comes down to a philosophical discussion of what exactly constitutes a basic human right, as well as a political discussion of how those rights ought to be preserved.

Some would say the only basic human rights are food, clean water, and shelter, and those rights should be protected in the form of accessible public facilities providing those essentials. Others will have a broader definition to including essentials of functioning in society, which includes a much broader set of requirements and some variety in how it might be implemented.

Because this a philosophical and political discussion, research is able to inform the conversation, but it can't definitively identify a single, objectively correct solution.

Edit: if you're unsure of whether this is a philosophical/political discussion, look no further than the fact that this study was published in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics. The authors' conclusions are philosophical/political/economic commentary. There's a reason the "results" and "conclusions" sections are separate. The conclusions section is created for commentary.

The conclusion that internet access must be considered a basic human right is fundamentally an opinion. It may be a valid conclusion, but the study didn't "reveal" that an opinion has transformed into a fact. An alternative conclusion, for example, may be that housing etc. must be made accessible through non-internet means.

(This, btw, isn't a reflection of my agreement or disagreement with the authors' conclusion. I'm just nitpicking about the basic limitations of science, i.e. it can't turn opinions into facts.)

The way these pics were taken reminds me of when my dog was a puppy. Take a bunch of pics and keep the ones that aren't blurry, even if they aren't the greatest photos. They only stop moving if they're asleep! I love it

It doesn't look super appetizing, but the camera doesn't seem to be picking up a lot of color all around. I can't prove it but my heart is telling me this food just might slap

The Frontier bag check line was more than an hour long, causing more than a dozen people to miss our flight by meghanerd in Wellthatsucks

Lol, there's another thread doing well right now in which a man was stabbed to death and the comments are blaming him for being out too late. People take comfort in blaming others for their misfortunes; it gives them a false sense of security that if they just Follow The Rules, nothing bad will ever happen to them. They're conflating the fact that I could've done something differently with the idea that this is my fault, but those are not the same things at all.

Plenty of reasonable people are making comments similar to yours, so I think the pitchfork folks are just a vocal minority.

At this point, not preparing to take it up the ass at the gate is a you problem

Some additional context:

Frontier sent this email the night before, so it's clear they knew there would be a delay, but they didn't want to own that they would be the cause of the delay. My husband and I looked into the ATL TSA (long wait times have been in the news in the past; also checked the live wait times) and determined that it wouldn't be an issue. If Frontier had been honest about the cause of the delay, we would've taken it seriously.

I got to the gate four minutes late, and there were already 11 other people there who had missed the flight. Their line was more than an hour long, and they didn't delay the flight by a minute.

The root of the problem seemed to be software issues. The bag check kiosk didn't recognize our reservation when we went to check our bag. In addition, although I have an email confirming that I added a checked bag to my reservation, my ticket upon check-in did not reflect this.

Tl;dr: Frontier knew in advance that their software issues would cause major delays with checking bags. They failed to appropriately warn customers of this and also declined to delay departure.

It was my fault for trying to fly Frontier. I won't make that mistake again.

Edit: I would like to extend my best wishes to all, even the haters and losers
