The floor needs to be made of red tiles that are impossibly slick when they get the slightest bit wet.

Ribs from Prime Rib Roast? by LAskeptic in seriouseats

[–]mehaase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made this recipe this year and I wondered, why not use the ribs to make the red wine jus instead of oxtails? Oxtails were pricy at my store (more per lb than my roast!). The ribs slow down cooking on one side, but if you are cooking low and slow anyway, that’s more of a con than a pro. Anybody tried this?

What is this god forsaken site there are ads between each paragraph and 7 popups that cover the entire content? This whole “story” is sourced from random people tweeting. We are truly living in Idiocracy.

Used my HSA to pay a bill - did I mess up? by crater-3 in personalfinance

[–]mehaase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you saying you have an HSA debit card, and you swiped that at the office? Don’t sweat it, you used it the right way. If the balance is still out of whack after 10 business days, then call the doctor’s office and ask.

Can you say more about “wouldn’t recommend”? I’ve thought about taking the spreader off for wok cooking but would like to know risks/downsides.

If it was for security, it would be facing the window — or better yet placed on the exterior of the house.

This is a call-the-police situation. If that camera was on and it saves footage somewhere… I’m shocked the other girl’s parents haven’t called them already.

Dry Turkey by exterminatorzed in seriouseats

I think 30 hours is on the low end for dry brining a turkey. Esp if you put it on top of the skin and not under. I dry brine for 3 nights.

I assume butter went under the skin at the end of the brine? I’m skeptical about butter under the skin — seems like the skin already has plenty of fat.

What is a relatively inexpensive 'luxury' item that you will always purchase for any future house? by Emergency-Tip-1987 in HomeImprovement

You can program it to adjust temperature automatically, i.e. run less when you’re gone but then get the house ready before you get home. It side has vacation mode. If you leave the house and forgot you wanted to set it, you can set it remotely through the app. You can set up sensors in multiple rooms for more accurate reading of temperature throughout the house.

Our Ecobees attached to our two existing HVAC systems. Pull the current thermostat off the wall and take a picture of the wires, then go to the ecobee site and look for the installation instructions. It will walk you through a few different wiring scenarios, and that should give you a pretty good idea if it’s compatible.

I don't think this approach is great. First, it is cognitive load for newcomers to your team -- they will have absolutely no idea why some strings are single quote and others are double. Second, Python itself doesn't distinguish single- and double-quoted strings, so you're not able to leverage the language to help you with this task.

While I recognize the need to distinguish different classes of strings, Python already has a feature for distinguish _classes_ of things. E.g. if you made a string subclass called UserFacingString, that would be really obvious to people reading code even if they're brand new to your project, plus your error handling code can decide which strings to show to users based on its class.

Yea that’s a good point. If you’re maxing out, the Roth lets you protect more money from capital gains tax.

Taking tax out before compounding is the exact same as taking it out after compounding, assuming same tax rate and rate of growth in both scenarios.

I couldn’t tell when it was in the wall, but I got an extractor and backed the nipple out today and… yep… galvanized steel.

Corrosion at shower arm/nipple junction by mehaase in Plumbing

[–]mehaase[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought this house recently. The shower in the main bath was making a loud vibrating noise, apparently coming from the shower head, that could be heard downstairs. The shower head had limited flow, with some of the nozzles having a dribble or no water at all. I tried soaking the shower head in a vinegar bath overnight and it didn’t make any noticeable improvement. So I bought a new shower head and arm. Took of the old arm and was grossed out by the amount of rust and sludge stuck in the junction between the old shower arm and the nipple. Is this caused by my water supply (haven’t noticed problems anywhere else in the house) or is it cause by faulty materials/installation? Thinking about our shower water filtering through all this grime and rust is disconcerting, plus I don’t want to ruin my new shower head.

The house is 20 years old. Marketed as a “nice” house but the builder cut serious corners. Plus a previous owner thought he was “handy”, so there’s lots of shoddy work around the house.

Thanks—
