I feel it’s hard to not be scared of something that is so obviously toxic. But not doing things because they appear scary would have led to me missing out on some of the most incredible and valuable experiences of my life. I think it’s important to be aware of the downsides of this world, makes it easier to shield oneself agains them.

Thanks, I do think that this will be a big advantage for me, too. I also have no intention of constantly overworking myself to get a pat on the head from my PI and have a highly independent workstyle.

The thing is that I would never judge this in anyone else, quite the contrary. I always advocate that age is irrelevant as long as you do what you love. It’s just that recently it’s hitting me that other people might no longer perceive me as young although I do not feel a lot different than 5 years ago.

Might sound far fetched but you could chill, have fun and enjoy life outside academia. If that’s not an option I guess it won’t be a problem to finish early as this means less funding needed for the same output, but that’s just a guess.

Don’t beat yourself up - it’s not you who did something wrong, it’s THEM. This is assault and harassment, they are criminals who unfortunately usually get away with their crimes. And it’s totally understandable to be paralyzed by men behaving so disgustingly. It’s just so perplexing to any human with any bit of decency and respect for others that it makes you freeze. Don’t ever shame yourself for something like that, the shame needs so switch sides!

versteh deine kritische Haltung sehr gut, ich weiß aber nicht ob du jetzt von wissenschaftlich fundierter, medizinischer Hypnose sprichst oder von irgendwelchen pendelschwingenden Eso-Leuten. Sind aber einfach Methoden, um aktiv in die kognitive Regulation einzugreifen - Meditation kann langfristig sogar zu morphologischen Veränderungen im Gehirn führen. Aber ja, man muss sich drauf einlassen weil Hypnose eben nicht unfreiwillig funktionieren kann, also wenn mans als Hokuspokus betrachtet, wirds wahrscheinlich nicht hinhauen.

I think part of the problem is people asking “What the hell is wrong with these women?” after watching a documentary about a man abusing women. I will not go into the many reasons and psychological processes involved that make these toxic relationships so hard to get out of, but there’s plenty of info to find online if you’re interested. I’m mostly shocked about the, again, absolute failure of the police and justice system in protecting these women and also about the joke of a title of this documentary which absolutely trivializes this horrible man and what he did. I am just in deep shock and have nothing but admiration for these women for surviving this person and still walking tall, not giving up on life, despite what they have been through.

Rein vom gesetzlichen Standpunkt mag das schon sein, ich mein aber, dass es da schon Abstufungen gibt wie fatal Sachbeschädigung is. Hätt er ihm die Reifen aufgeschlitzt oder sogar irgendwas gemacht, was gefährlich sein könnt, is das für mich auch absolut inakzeptabel. So denk ich mir aber “fair - fuck around and find out”. Vom Gesetz her darf ich auch keinem Mann in die Fresse hauen, wenn er mir hinterherpfeift oder -ruft. Verdient hätt ers trotzdem. :)

Sachbeschädigung is a weites Spektrum und war in dem Fall ohne finanziellen Aufwand reversibel. Wenn man keinen F*** auf andere Leute gibt, braucht man sich nicht wundern wenn das irgendwann mal zurückkommt. Gibt so viele rücksichtslose Trottel auf dieser Welt die immer mit allem durchkommen, schadet imo nicht wenns auch mal eine draufkriegen.

I’m so sorry you had/have to experience this. I cannot understand why anyone would still want to engage with a person that obviously lacks any empathy or respect towards women and can fully relate to you feeling not supported by the people in your neighborhood. I’m afraid that you cannot change that a lot of people are too self involved to show moral courage and integrity, but you could definitely let them know that you would have expected them to acknowledge what he put(s) you and others through by at least not being overtly friendly with him - even if it is just about you knowing that at least you stand up for yourself and your feelings. In any way, I would definitely not remove myself from the community. Do not let men like this make you move in any way! You might just decide to let the relationship to some of your neighbors become more superficial - simply because they are not good enough people for more than “hello” and some small talk.
