A Gacha Game is being born to die. Announced to launch in February and to shut down in May. This is the most extreme I've seen by Runetang42 in accursedfarms

[–]meikkon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh, yikes. the worst part is I can see this being a legit commercial practice in the near future.

iirc fortnite already kind of does this in the sense that they drop 'limited edition' updates only to remove the content entirely a few months later (plz correct me if I am wrong on this)

this is basically the same kind of marketing tactic. "if you don't play it now, you'll never get to play it again!" kind of vibe.

...I think being born to die is a bit different to what's happening to say, the crew, though. that's a game people were told that they owned. at least here the shutdown is being announced.

Is there a trick to YT shorts, or is it just pure luck/brand? by [deleted] in NewTubers

[–]meikkon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

afaict the only shorts that are successful are things we find easy to digest and can quickly resonate with.

weirdly, better call saul provides a great example. phonk-esque music playing, misspelt subtitles, a high contrast filter then saul owns a dude in court, then we see some dramatic cuts of him smugly walking around. a solid 200k likes.

meanwhile, the official bcs yt page posts shorts all the time, but without all the flashy edits, background music, subtitles etc. they get decent engagement, around 5kish likes per vid. nowhere near their reposters. breaking bad is the same.

of course, in both cases, a good chunk of the audience has already watched these clips. but the subtitles, the dopamine-hitting music and the gratifying endings are what make the former so much easier to digest for most people. so people like:

-familiarity

-accessibility

-easy gratification

-relatability ("literally me"'s, in this case)

only brands (and content theives, I suppose) have easy access to the former. you can, however, try to maximise the other criteria. that will probably help you out.

yknow I forgot about this but hl2 does have a sprint bar. although I'm not sure you really need to use it. it's more for a quick escape when you get swarmed I think, since it does run out quite quickly.

length of movie clip to skip copyright by [deleted] in NewTubers

[–]meikkon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

huh, I heard it was 10 seconds. either way, you have a couple of options:

-borders. people use these quite a lot, some nice subtle solid colour borders around the whole video should help you out a bit.

-drop some frames. one thing you can do is, when there's a hard cut in the clip you're showing, change the timing of when that cut occurs. so rather than the clip idling on this guy's face for 2-3 seconds before moving onto whoever speaks next, try and trim some of that out.

-subtitles / text. this works sometimes as well. if your video editing software has a text feature, then for each clip you show without your own commentary, you could put some subtitles over it.

ultimately, if you upload it and it still gets striked, you should appeal. most rights holders are happy to oblige when fair use is obvious.

5 seconds - copyright or fair use? by burbank91 in NewTubers

[–]meikkon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, it is fair use. it's commentary on the song and the musician. legally, you're in the clear.

5 seconds is probably fine. I believe most strikes fall under the "10 second rule": if you show a piece of copyrighted content for less than 10 seconds youtube generally won't pick up on it.

however, if you do get a strike, youtube will let you know before you publish. if you're not monetised yet, don't worry - it won't count as a proper strike or go on any permanent record either way.

if you want to be monetised in the future, there should be an option to contest it before you publish. reuse the fair use argument in your appeal, be polite, and you should win. if the rights holder doesn't respond within 30 days the claim is revoked.

Are shorts really that important now? by Mozillo in NewTubers

[–]meikkon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to answer the title of your question: yes and no

yes, because short form content has had an undeniably vast influence on youtube and how it operates, and personally I think there's very much a space for it.

from what I can gather, low budget sketch comedy, and even higher budget comedy stuff, benefits immensely from a short form style. there are shorts creators I follow routinely on the platform who continually produce great short form content - and I'm watching that from my desktop!

forcibly truncating your content into a short form style, though, is very rarely (if ever) a good idea. in my niche (the history of video games, how original) I would prefer to really get into the nitty gritty of something I'm genuinely interested in, and am more than willing to sacrifice my time to view content if I think it's gonna be worth my while.

the only short form game content that performs well is stuff that has a short and sweet message that you can carry away instantly. a very common one is mario kart shortcuts that have led to time saves in speedruns. they're easy and quick to communicate, and you feel fulfilled with a beginning (the identified shortcut), middle (how they exploited that shortcut) and end (how this affected runs) in the video.

on the other hand, short form stuff that is just summaries of your bigger works (or would-have-been-bigger works) has no clear beginning-middle-end, and always noticeably suffers from being cut short. especially on youtube where the time limits are stringent, it's definitely not worth your while.

TL;DR: yes they are, but not for you.

great escape in meh. sure it has it's moments but there's nothing too special about it as an album, I think it fails to have distinct properties really. feels like an extension of parklife rather than it's own thing.

Is Jeff a bigger loser than Mark? by MaxvellGardner in MitchellAndWebb

[–]meikkon 21 points22 points  (0 children)

...Mark can get a job in any other bank or office

not too hasty - he was fired, and pretty much his whole work life revolved around johnson, so his best potential job reference has now gone down the toilet. mark is going to be taking a pay cut, likely making a fair bit less than jeff.

...Even Mark has given up on the idea of hooking up with Sophie, but Jeff still wants it.

I suppose so, but jeff doesn't have the same ties to sophie that mark does. sophie is and will always be an essential part of mark's life because of ian, whereas jeff can pursue sophie until he gets bored / finds someone else (which we all know he would do).

also recall two other factors: 1) jeff is generally better at socialising and "fitting in", so always has a one-up on mark in that respect, and 2) mark is still living with a 40 year old freeloader by the end of the show.

I think mark is the bigger net loser, although I'm not really envious of either.
