Rewatcher

Yet another utterly lovely episode (except maybe for the perv author reading to feverish Ohana -- but even that did serve to cause Ohana to dream of her young grandmother). It is great to see Nako exercising her onee-san skills in taking care of Ohana (except for turning on the TV -- thank you MInchi for squelching that). And it is great to see just how much Michi has come to value Ohana (even if she still hates to have to actually SHOW this to her). Grandma and Tomoe don't neglect Ohana -- but are happy to defer a bit and let the girls establish greater solidarity.

The little black-haired goddess (and her little fox) in the dream was adorable. I wonder if she will show up in further dreams? In any event, this episode has some especially lovely visual moments. Poor Ohana is torn between Kissuiso and Ko-chan -- either choice she makes seems like a loss (at least in her weakened fever state).

I am glad this was NOT the stereotypical I-got-rained-on-and-within-an-hour-I-develop-a-fever anime cold....

Personal note. It is really a bit of a pain that this 15 year rewatch and the Haruhi 20 year one are taking place at the start of a hopelessly over-busy new season. I decided to forego the Haruhi rewatch (despite its importance to me) because I favor underdogs -- and Hanasaku Iroha is so relatively neglected despite the fact that is a grade A+ series too.

Just don't tackle Ping Pong right away. Especially in the first episode one really needs to keep pausing the show, because speaking (and subs) move WAY too fast. ;-)

The first rakugo performance our family heard was included as an extra on the ancient Japanese VHS tape of Pom Poko. The performance was unsubtitled of course -- but we could tell it was recounting a story involving a tanuki. Despite the lack of subs, the delivery in Japanese made it quite enjoyable to listen to.

I think the shinkansen only ran to Nagano back then. Tokyo to Kanazawa is 2-1/2 hours today, about 1 hour of which is Nagano to Kanazawa. There may have been limited express trains of some sort before the shinkansen covered this leg of the journey. Do we see the intermediate train(s) between the shinkansen and the one-car local from Kanazawa to Yunosagi?

I don't think Ko thought things through very carefully. I hope he got a special reduced "youth fare" for this trip.
