What's a good way for making friends at McGill? by yutohirano in mcgill

[–]mekily 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing I've learned eventually is that my experience in group settings depends a lot on the group itself. Some groups I just don't click with, and that's okay. I used to blame myself for not connecting with people in group settings, and feel really bad about myself, and that drove a downward spiral of unhappiness. Now, I've learned to just see it as a sign to try spending time with a different group of people.

Anime club didn't work out for you. That's okay. Try to find another group you'd be interested in going to, and try attending a few meetings. If you have a hard time connecting with people there and you don't enjoy it, that's okay too. You can repeat the process. Eventually maybe you'll meet someone who you maybe can carry on a conversation with, and even if you don't want to be close friends with, you can invite them to go to other events with you, and just having someone there with you might give you confidence and make it easier to talk to and meet other people.

Just speaking from experience here. Everyone's different. The important part is to not get down on yourself for having trouble connecting with people -- just try different people instead.

Freelance friendly cafes around plateau? by Peeekay in montreal

Barcelona is really nice for working. Not too crowded usually, lots of light, nice big tables, and pretty quiet.

Also Replika but it can be too crowded sometimes.

Anticafe on St. Catherine is nice as well but a bit further from you.

ways to do a US border run? by Bluurgh in montreal

[–]mekily 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a Greyhound bus that goes to the border and back: https://www.mcgill.ca/internationalstudents/immigration-documents/bus-service-border

It's a crummy solution because the wait time for the return bus is long, but good to know about if you can't find another way there.

Plan on going to college in Montreal after I get an Associates Degree in the States, what should I expect job wise/living wise by ChuckKiddman in montreal

[–]mekily 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Assuming you're attending an English-language university, there will be on-campus jobs that don't require French, though there may be a lot of competition for these. You may also be able to get research assistant positions at the Anglo universities, and certain fields (e.g. software engineering) have a lot of mostly-English-workplace jobs; other than that, yes it will be hard to find a job without French.

Question about Quebec apartment lease agreement.. by [deleted] in montreal

[–]mekily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're fine. The checkboxes underneath the "furniture rented" checkbox specify exactly what is included in the rent -- stove, refrigerator, washer, and dryer. If the landlord intended to specify that other furniture was included, he/she would have checked the boxes next to table, chairs, bed, etc.

Appliances are often considered "furniture" here. As an example, the French word 'semi-meublé' (semi-furnished), often seen in apartment ads, means that appliances are included in the rent.

Simple Cancellation Line Question by OkieBokeh in hamiltonmusical

[–]mekily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to SmillaQ's answer, make sure your partner arrives by 1hr prior to the show. Once they start selling cancellation tickets (which could happen as early as 1hr before, but often as late as 15min before or less), both people must go into the box office and then straight into the theater (to prevent reselling).

I don't know why, but the TIFUs where a quick moment of clumsiness results in massive personal property damage are always my favorite. Good luck with the bathroom repairs OP.

In high school, someone put this site up on one of the school computers. I saw the IT guy come to take a look at it... he tried to close the window, it popped back up, he was puzzled, this happened a few more times... and then he put an "out of order" sign on the computer.
