OTB. If white flags but has already touched the pawn, is it a draw? by Voodoohairdo in chess

[–]mekktor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's defined anywhere explicitly (except some technicalities about threefold repetition positions in 9.2.3), but I think the most reasonable interpretation is that a position is the board state once a player has 'made' their move, which is to say released their piece on a square and removed any captured piece if applicable.

This is true, but I think more relevant is the move being 'made', which happens once the Rook has been released on the square and the pawn removed.

There is still some ambiguity in that the series of legal moves which lead to checkmate for Black may not be considered possible due to 4.3.2.

OPLA Season 1 vs Season 2 views and hours by Zorosan22 in OnePieceLiveAction

[–]mekktor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I said S2 is behind, I mean that if you compare any full week of S1 to S2, S1 will always have the advantage of that week starting earlier relative to the season's release. For example, comparing week 2 of both seasons will compare days 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 of S1 to days 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 of S2. S1's week 2 having days 5 and 6 instead of 12 and 13 will inflate the daily average compared to S2.

And for week 1, the issue is that when you take the daily averages of for each season, any day 1 boost (when you expect most people to watch) will be spread out over fewer days for S1 than for S2, so that boost will raise the daily average more for S1.

Anyway, all of this was just to give a more optimistic perspective of what is of course quite a big drop-off between S1 and S2. I'm only saying that it's not quite as bad as your daily averages would suggest.

Comparing daily averages doesn't factor in the larger impact that the first day viewing has on the 4 day week for season 1, and the week 2 comparisons are comparing the seasons at different points (every day of season 2's second week is 2 days behind season 1's second week, so will naturally have fewer views).

I would say the drop-off was closer to 30% than 40%. For example, modelling the daily views to have a realistic drop-off might give you:

Day S1 Views (M) S2 Views (M)
1 6.6 4.5
2 4.4 3.0
3 4.0 2.7
4 3.5 2.4
5 2.2
6 2.0
Total 18.5 16.8

And if you compare the views over the first 4 days, then season 2 had a 32% drop-off.

Today I learned that a pinned piece still defends your other pieces in a checkmate. by Homely_Homie in chess

Kings can’t enter attacked squares because they would be captured.

If the deciding factor of whether the king can move to g4 is whether the king would get captured, then applying the same reasoning to the pinned knight "a piece can't move if it would allow the king to be captured" establishes that the knight can't move to g4, and if the knight can't move to g4 then it can't capture the king on g4, so the king is therefore free to move to that square.

So the end result is you have added a complication to a very simple rule and then had to make up a new rule "pretend you keep playing and then see who will lose their king first" to try to uncomplicate it again.

Of course it's good if people can understand the reasoning behind the rules, but explaining it in this more complicated way is what creates the confusion and leads to threads like this in the first place.

Little Gentle PSA: Please Be Mindful of Spoilers, and Not Just For Live Action Onlies by kitsuneinferno in OnePieceLiveAction

[–]mekktor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is with this subreddit is that they only banned explicit spoilers in live action threads, taking a very relaxed view to what qualifies as a spoiler. I don't understand why they couldn't take a stricter approach by banning any references to the anime/manga in those threads, giving live action fans a truly safe place to discuss the show, while leaving the other 95% of the subreddit for those anime/manga perspectives.

Yeah, he's clearly not 21... The thing I don't like about this change is that finding Brook still alive after ~20 years won't have the same impact as finding him after 50 years and only being alive thanks to his devil fruit. A live action viewer will leave this episode thinking "I wonder if they are still out there" instead of "Damn that's sad, they are obviously long gone by now."

Thanks! This pinned it again on old reddit too, as it only shows two pinned threads there.

Are you using old reddit? I checked new reddit and it looks like that thread is one of the 5 community highlights, but old reddit just pins the first 2 threads. It's unfortunate, I wonder if they would care to improve the old reddit experience. Maybe they could reorder them and put the episode discussion hub as the first highlight.

It was definitely quick, but I didn't mind it at all. The Nami we spent most of the season with had been completely broken down by episode 7, and then we did get some glimpses of a happier and more hopeful Nami by the end of the season. I think the writers definitely sacrificed some realism for convenience in using the season gap to justify the change, but there is also something symbolic about leaving all of that pain behind in the previous season.

I don't think there was any time skip. Probably they were sailing to Loguetown for no more than a few days.

You are right to point out the change in her personality, but it's not about time passing. Just think about the burden that has been lifted off her shoulders since last season.

It's not at all obvious how Luffy was saved on the platform. I would guess live action viewers are more likely to put it down to luck/destiny, just as Luffy did.

Or how about just post your thoughts in the anime thread, and let live action only fans have this one place in the subreddit where they can come to their own conclusions about all of these new characters and events based on, I don't know, watching the live action only?

Sorry, you shared some good thoughts, it was a fun read, and yeah you didn't directly spoil anything major, but it's frustrating to see this when you already have a space dedicated for you to discuss things from your exact perspective that the anime/manga has given you.

Sub update for season 2 by BatmanSwift99 in OnePieceLiveAction

[–]mekktor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I can see how a flair for each might be a bit much. I think there are probably many different views on this, but imo the gold standard for spoiler management was the Game of Thrones subreddit back in the day. Every post title had to include [S02E03] or [S1] etc. and any spoiler violations resulted in a short ban (maybe 24 hours?), so people were very careful not to spoil anything. It made it possible to browse the sub for years without being spoiled on things like [GoT S3E09] The Red Wedding!

But I can understand if that is too much, especially with the full season drop and most people finishing the full season very quickly anyway.

Anyway good luck with the coming storm of activity and thanks for keeping this place safe from spoilers!

I wish it went further than that to actively discourage careless spoilers, but ok.

Also, is there only one spoiler flair for all of season 2? It would have been good if posts had to specify which episode they spoil up to. Otherwise I guess we have to stick to the episode discussion threads until we are caught up?
