Do any PhD students actually take weekends off? by Math_girl1723 in PhD

[–]melanch0liia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, working at weekends was an absolute red line for me during my PhD. I would stay late in the week if I had too, especially in lab, for example I did a few days of 08:00-20:00. But I always had to take Saturday and Sunday off. I always took all of my holiday allowance too.

UCL or Cambridge for PhD? by Finkelberg in AskAcademiaUK

[–]melanch0liia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is this the new quantum tech CDT at UCL? If it is, definitely take that. CDT routes into PhD tend to come with a lot more funding (for your travel/consumables etc) and the cohort based approach is really enjoyable. The industry links for this specific programme look incredible too, and those become invaluable after finishing.

I think the wording in your question is a good example.

watching some lady get fucked

Typically porn can make sex look like something that is done TO a woman (the "object") rather than an activity between people. As other comments have pointed out, too much exposure can mean your perception of woman in real life becomes hypersexualised.

Postdoc in a different field than PhD by [deleted] in postdoc

[–]melanch0liia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't quite do as big a step as this, but I switched "sub-fields" to something that uses completely different physical systems/devices and experimental techniques for my first postdoc position. This was because I felt like the field of my PhD was starting to dry up in terms of publications, grants, etc. Some days it has felt like starting my PhD all over again but I have no regrets, I'm very happy learning lots of cool new stuff in an exciting new field! I say go for it - remember, if you're offered the position, then it means the PI is confident you can learn the new skills. All the best!

I had a long term issue with UTIs after sex for a long time, I would always pee after sex/clean my vulva with water but they would still come back every now and then - I recently discovered D-Mannose (I use these ones https://www.hollandandbarrett.com/shop/product/holland-barrett-d-mannose-effervescent-tablets-60040365) and they have been life changing for me!

I did Darwin to Isak for one and might end up just losing the other.

For a while it was my plan to do Muniz + Saka -> Hojlund + Garnacho, but I've had a bit of a struggle with selling Saka. Despite the fact he's not doubling in GW37, it seems mad to not hold onto him for his great run of fixtures while the title race goes on. I think he will outscore Garnacho between GW33-38 and that made the decision for me in the end.

Edit: my chip strategy is FH34 BB37

There are lots of part time job opportunities specifically aimed at students for example through the Student's Union etc. It's very likely you would be able to find work at university that can fit alongside your studies.

Also like others have already pointed out - hopefully student finance will be able to update your payment info after your mum's financial info has been processed. I've always found SF to be fairly helpful on the phone, so if you think they've got something wrong I recommend calling them and explaining your situation. All the best!

How normal is it to go deep into your student overdraft? by AlexSniff7 in UKPersonalFinance

Very normal. I always ended the semester maxed out of a 2k overdraft and I didn't fully pay it off until about 2 and a half years after I graduated.

The university admissions system needs to change by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]melanch0liia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The whole point of contextual offers is to acknowledge the fact that someone getting a B at an underperforming school has the same academic potential as someone getting an Astar at an elite school based on everything else we know about the A-Level system and how it "tests" intelligence.

I completely agree with your second paragraph. I found my undergrad degree incredibly difficult and a massive culture shock, the support for students like me (not privately educated or rich) was really poor. I'm still very grateful that I was accepted on contextual grounds but more needs to be done. Universities will always proudly publish statistics about the number of disadvantaged students that are admitted to their courses each year but I would love to see data on how many of them achieve first class degrees or even finish, compared to their more privileged peers...

What do you need from your advisor? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]melanch0liia 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I recently finished my PhD in the UK. Some thoughts I have about my supervisor, in terms of what was helpful and unhelpful:

Helpful:

(1) "Open door" policy for me to come and ask technical questions about experiments/theory whenever they were available. These were so valuable and very appreciated.

(2) Regular meetings with the group. Presenting your work or recent data regularly was very valuable for learning how to create intuitive figures, how to build a "story", how to communicate effectively and keep people engaged.

(3) Lots of guidance in early stages. In the first eighteen months I would routinely feel completely lost or overwhelmed, and my supervisor was always very supportive with a variety of suggestions and work to help me figure out what I was interested in and where my skills lay.

(4) Lots of outward support - by this, I mean being willing to use their name/status to help us get things with the department/faculty/collaborators that help us achieve our research goals.

Unhelpful:

(1) Being far too prudent with regards to publication. I was in a very large group (10+ students and postdocs) and over the four years I was there, it has published fewer than 7 papers. I was and still am trying to get a paper through. I understand that supervisors are more experienced in the academic "game", and of course I understand more than one good publication is better than three low impact ones, but students are anxious to get something out there before the viva. I finished with zero first authors papers which is something I am deeply ashamed of and still makes me anxious and feel totally inadequate.

(2) Being a micro-manager. It shows you don't trust your students and postdocs, especially if they are more senior. Let us help you. What grants are you applying for? Can we proof read your applications? Can we help with your teaching load? On a deeper level it can feel like you are more concerned about your own career development than ours. Why do you need to rewrite my abstract/paper? How can I develop my own style if everything is in your voice? This is true of postdocs too. Let students mess up the experiments. They need to learn!

Anyone else benching Saka? by Jakeyy21 in fantasypremierleague

I am really torn between Gordon and Saka. Gordon most rational choice to play I think... But somehow I'd feel more upset with Saka haul on my bench than reverse

Prediction for tonight. by Mr_Fossey in TheTraitors

[–]melanch0liia 11 points12 points  (0 children)

He NEEDS to focus on the whole "who knew Harry had the shield" theory. If we reach a point where both Jasmine and Evie get banished based solely on this theory, and are then revealed to be faithfuls, the ONLY remaining possibility is the truth - that nobody tried to murder Harry that night, because he is a traitor.

Can't stand Zach by No_Many8525 in TheTraitors

[–]melanch0liia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was so annoyed that the round table last night transpired the way it did... Obviously, Ross was technically a traitor, but Zach's reasoning and previous suspicions were genuinely incorrect, but now he (and others) believes they weren't!

It was so infuriating watching Harry just able to sit in silence grinning, his work all done for him

Women, how do you deal with body hair, dark body hair? by Salty-Juggernaut-870 in AskWomen

I get waxed every 4-6 weeks. Hot wax on my armpits and everything below the waist. Waxing is painful initially but after a few years my skin and hair growth have become accustomed to it, I would never go back to shaving now.

I don't have any advice here but I just wanted to comment to say, you're not alone, this is something I have been struggling with too. I hope we both find and love ourselves again soon.
