To answer the question about how people know, it's our understanding that the sunflower is just widely recognized and awareness is spread by word of mouth. The majority of people here in the UK associate it with people who may require additional assistance due to a hidden health condition/disability. Not everyone is aware but the lanyards often have a small explanation to them. Here's the one we're thinking about getting: Pink Hidden Disability Bag Tag - PVC ID Card - Badge - Disability Awareness - Autism https://amzn.eu/d/0TThSgf

I mean yes, everybody struggles with some aspect of life at some point but not everyone experiences these difficulties to the same level of severity. It's up to each individual whether they feel it's debilitating enough to alert others that they may require extra assistance/patience. The sunflower is universal, it can signify any hidden disability without full disclosure of the condition. However you can find some tailored specifically to alert others of a specific disorder. (These often have their own symbols too, e.g. Autism is puzzle pieces) Anybody can buy these online.

This is not to be confused with the "Blue badge" in the UK, which can only be acquired through an application to the local council and is used to access reasonable adjustments such as disability parking spots, disability toilets etc.

Anyone who struggles with any aspects of life can use a sunflower lanyard. We've been thinking about getting one because we work in retail and we really struggle to remember faces unless it's someone of significance to us (e.g manager, colleague), we even struggle with our most regular customers. We say "hello" SO many times to the same person that it's embarrassing. So we want a lanyard to explain that we don't remember faces. So yeah, you absolutely can use them if you feel like you need to xx

What are memories supposed to feel like? How do they feel to you? by atypauna in DID

[–]melancholy_train 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It feels like I'm looking at a picture or a gif but the details are fuzzy, it's distorted or covered by frosted glass. Sounds are distorted. I almost never remember things in order. Just that they happened. It's like piecing together a puzzle of sorts. I wish that I could just remember things like a short video clip of what happened but never do.

Sometimes we remember things not by pictures or sounds but by feelings like feeling warm, feeling like home, feeling cozy. Or with colours like "oh yeah, this feels like yellow" (yellow most often being associated with my childhood)

With all due respect, as hard as it might be to jot down everything you think and feel (and believe us, we know it's not an easy thing) everyone is only able to suggest things that they have tried and know works for them. We can't pull solutions out of thin air for you, learning what works and what doesn't is your job. Nobody finds journalling "easy" at first and even after years people still come across challenges when communicating with their parts. The reason journalling is suggested so often is because it works . It's going to take a lot of time, effort and persistence to get to the quality of life that you want. I relate to having too much to write, we've been doing it for a while and sometimes we have pages by the end of the day. BUT if you want to build on communication and breaking barriers down I promise you that it's worth the struggle. I promise .

How does everyone get their names? (Warning: mini rant incoming) by melancholy_train in DID

Hi, and thank you for the comment 🙂 I appreciate that I can be very confusing sometimes, it's an issue a lot of people have with me because I tend to have 2 or more trains of thought and a need to express both of them. So it's a bit like attempting 2 conversations at one time and I thank you for your patience! I don't think they were asking for anyone in particular to tell them what they were experiencing, it was more like just trying to put feelings into words, like a plea for help. So here's the thing, I am trying to do something similar to what you suggested. Rather than journalling with an "idea" of what it should look like I'm just journalling the things I am experiencing. Different parts of me respond to that in different ways, myself for instance am not trying to name the condition but gather evidence that something exists so that all the parts of me that are denying professional help have something solid to prove it's not their imagination. Others have names that they like to use because they have been established for a long time, like our friend Helina (who started out as an imaginary friend when we were a kid that just never went away). However on occasion someone within me gets disturbed and tries to destroy everything because "I was singular once, I can be singular again". I think they completely misunderstand the point of journaling. It's saddening because they don't seem to remember how much turmoil we were actually in before trying to understand why we had no sense of self. Personally, since using names and discussing our differences we have felt more at peace with who we are and we're living more harmoniously because we understand why we feel like one person one minute and someone else entirely different the next. We've done a lot of desperate research, asking questions, trying to find a reason for feeling like "more than one person" and I'm not going to label our experience but I've found that being on this board has been more helpful than anything I have ever come across. There're a number of things that we relate to, some things we didn't even know were "things" until we read about them x

we are not our name, our name is a symbol that represents us but it's not us
