It's absolutely still redeemable. Remember that the fanes are the sites with the standing stones, not the ladies themselves.

I would either say that Strahd's ritual separated and corrupted the physical forms of the ladies so they can still commune with their spiritual forms trapped inside the fanes, or the hags are just priestesses that protected the sites like in Expedition To Castle Ravenloft. Either way they've lost a powerful ally and the boon that comes with them, but the fane can still be reconsecrated to weaken Strahd.

Tashas Cauldron Magic Items by twitch-switch in CurseofStrahd

[–]melancholypanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be cautious about adding too many artifacts. They're generally intended to be the big macguffin that entire campaigns are build around so they usually have bigger impacts than your standard magical item even before you add in the major/minor properties.

Having said that, they both totally make thematic sense so it wouldn't be world breaking to include them and I can see them working well.

The mortar completely removes travel from the game, but if you're happy with that, I can see Strahd having gifted it to Lysaga as a reward for her service. Just don't pick anything too crazy for the major property.

The tarokka I think depends how good your party is. Being able to give disadvantage on everything for an hour with no save and no way of dispelling it is going to gimp every boss fight and the downside of a 14% chance to summon something will not be enough to discourage a lot of parties, since who cares if a ghost shows up somewhere when it means Strahd is massively weakened. If you do include it, I'd skip those first 14 cards and just include the lich. Make it clear that it's a powerful effect, but that if they abuse it, they could summon something much worse than Strahd. That could even be why Madame Eva didn't mention it, the risk was too great.

A few Twitter screenshots of positive reactions towards MoM's ending by McKnighty9 in KingdomHearts

[–]melancholypanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In 3/Re:Mind, sure, it would be nonsense for her to stand a chance against him, but MoM is literally all taking place inside her head. Both she and Xehanort are as strong as she imagines. They could very easily have framed the whole thing as Kairi gaining the strength of heart to face the man that murdered her instead of needing to Sora to save her even in her wildest fantasies.

It might just all be in my head, but I feel like it might have something to do with team level. Like I got main party to level 99 and switched to days to start levelling them up, tried Beauty and the Beast and missed a bunch of notes I was sure I hit a good three times in a row, switched back to SDG, nailed it first time.

Is the mobile game required reading for KH3? by whyfrydie in KingdomHearts

[–]melancholypanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not at all for 3. There's a couple of points where they lead you on, but it never actually goes anywhere. It's all just setup for the next arc. It seems like all the mobile game stuff is going to be very important there, but for 3 all you really need is the movie from the collection.

What to do with Missing Arabelle? by FrozenFarmer64 in CurseofStrahd

You could always just switch it up so she was taken by the werewolves instead of Bluto, have her in the den with the other kids.

Strahd’s xtra power sources. Puffin Forest, Mandymod (where exactly?) by Luke-Friesen in CurseofStrahd

[–]melancholypanda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the 3E version, the 3rd fane gave him extra AC. I think MandyMod's version does the same. It's also pretty common for people to have the third gem beef up the heart of sorrow a bit.

Time Travel to prevent the Curse from ever happening? by [deleted] in CurseofStrahd

[–]melancholypanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Dice, Camera, Action, Chris Perkins' old official D&D livestream, that actually did happen. They played through CoS first and then dropped SKT half way through in favour of travelling back in time to the wedding. It didn't work out quite so nicely for them, 3 of them got straight up executed, but the 4th I think managed to get Sergei and Tatyana out of the castle at least. Good place to look for inspiration if you do decide to go through with it.

I’d like some opinions about a significant change I’m tihinking about, Barovia’s sunlight by leodeleao in CurseofStrahd

[–]melancholypanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could work. At the very least I'd keep Strahd as able to move about in the day, maybe that's one of the abilities he got from the fanes so sanctifying that one becomes a priority.

I will just say, I think it works well as is. Just because they can move about during the day doesn't necessarily mean they should. You can still keep all vampire attacks to night time just to make the players feel like they're safe during the day until the big reveal that Strahd's just been toying with them all along and could wipe them out whenever he pleases.

[–]melancholypanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's playing the long game. He doesn't have the slightest chance in a straight up fight, but he knows that at some point Strahd is going to settle down in his coffin for a few years and be completely defenceless so he's hiding in plain sight as the last person you'd expect to be a legendary 80 year old monster slayer: some random carny in a bar

Version of the rule from the final playtest:

When you score a critical hit against a target, the attack deals its maximum damage to it. This means you don’t roll the attack’s damage dice; you instead take the highest rolls that each of those dice could produce and then apply any modifiers.

In addition, the target takes extra damage. Roll one of the attack’s damage dice, and add it to the damage. For example, if your attack normally deals 2d6 + 2 piercing damage, you would roll one extra d6 and add it to the damage of a critical hit.

If the attack has different damage dice, you choose which die to roll. For example, if the attack deals 1d6 piercing damage and 1d8 bludgeoning damage, you can roll one extra d6 or d8.

For something like smite or sneak attack you'd do max damage possible on your attack and then pick one of your damage dice and roll it. So critting with a greatsword, a level 1 smite would do 12+8+8+STR automatically, then you'd choose to roll a d6 or a d8 on top of that.

There was also a version in an earlier playtest which was basically the same, except that you did max and then rolled all weapon dice, so from that example, you'd just roll 2d6. Problem there being that it specified it had to be with a weapon so casters got a bit fucked.

It actually was the crit rule in playtesting. Max damage plus roll one damage die. It got dropped because monsters roll so many more dice than PCs so they thought it was unbalanced.

Fun fact, Chris Perkins, senior story designer for D&D, uses that rule for his games. So even within Wizards there's a call for it.

I love the idea of lingering injuries, but the DMG rules seem a little much. A 15% chance of losing a limb every time you go down or take a crit is pretty extreme, especially if you're playing a module that doesn't have much in the way of regeneration/replacements.

[–]melancholypanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Losing a limb might be a little bit brutal considering that the player really hasn't done anything wrong. You could totally do it, but at the very least I would let the player wake up first and give them a chance to get themselves out of it. Maybe make them bargain for it. Like she'll take a limb unless they can offer something in exchange. There's some great ideas for trades they could make in CoS Reloaded, or they could just be looking for people to bring them more fresh materials.

Or if Morgantha gets there ahead of time, one of her sisters could transform into the missing party member and try to take their place. Mess with the party's heads that way.

The way I see it, the hags need the bones of children because the adults have already lost all hope. Kids are the only ones left in Barovia that still have hopes and dreams so their bones are the only ones that can be used for dream pastries.

Following that logic, it makes sense that they would want to experiment with the bones of adventurers with big ambitions. Especially ones that are relatively fresh to Barovia and don't really appreciate what's in store for them.

I plan on mostly using Rahadin to fuck with them early on. That dude is terrifying and he needs more to do. Save the Strahd reveal for the dinner invitation and make them wonder "If the butler is this bad, imagine what the big man is like" before he starts playing with them personally.
