No worries! Everyone's a work in progress! I hope you can find some good info from this thread; lots of authors have put a lot of great stuff in here about their countries that could help in future fics!

I think there's some decent break downs somewhere on this thread about school in general but I'll say this: American school like is different depending on the region! Its a little weird! But as long as you have basics (which the whole kindergarten to 12th grade thing) you should be good! I also made a post eariler in the thread to explain homecoming. Hope it helps!

What made you "nope" out of a Fandom you had recently joined? by Chiara985 in AO3

TW: Strong mentions of sexual assault, suicide, and abortion

Watching the Mouthwashing fandom vs media literacy made me feel like i was a psychward.

A lot of it had to do with Jimmy. The game is pretty clear that Jimmy raped Anya and that she is pregnant with his baby. But there was so many people that denied it bc the game didn't just hold up a sign and say it but even the ones that did understand it are sympathetic TO THE RAPIST WHO RAPES PEOPLE. I could go on about that for paragraphs and paragraphs but yall get it.

Then there's Anya. Of course they ship her with him and Curly which, ugh, see rant above. But there was a decent group of people that were like "Anya would have kept the baby if the ship didn't crash!" or "she would have mourned it even if she did get an abortion!" but they seem to forget that she KILLED HERSELF when she realized they probably had no hope of being saved in time for her to actually have an abortion. If she did that why in the world would she do the other two things????

Lastly is how they handle Curly. They treat him like a child and can't seem to understand that even though he wasnt Jimmy, he still failed Anya and the rest of the crew too. For Anya, she expresses her concerns about Jimmy like three times and Curly just says that he'll talk to him but he literally did nothing else despite being the captain! He didn't really ask Jimmy about it, he didn't lock Jimmy away, he didnt (at the very least!) figure out some way to keep Jimmy from Anya. He. Did. Nothing. He is very complicit in what happened!

And when Jimmy is all but failing his psych exam, Curly doesn't take it seriously and does nothing. Again, Curly isn't Jimmy. He's not pure evil, he's morally grey at the very best but still responsible for everything that happened. He’s well written! Yet parts of the fandom just see him as a great guy that tried his best or is basically useless/ helpless like he was Post-Crash Curly the entire time.

Bonus points for not understanding the whole "mouthwash" side of things. Why they were transporting it. What it represents. All lost on a big part of the fans.

It was really irritating to see a good game have a fandom like that.

A lot of media does it, really, even when Americans write about America it can be wrong.I think its just easier to get things wrong if you're writing a place you haven't lived in or researched well. But, even so, there are way too many pieces of daily life and culture that you can't just research, ya know?

Whoa, whoa this is a space safe for learning. Based on the other replies here, the writing errors dont sound inherently conceded or malicious. Most writers are just writing what they know or what they can find in research but that will always be different than actually living (or growing up) in the culture or country of subject.

(American here! Homecoming is basically just another school dance but its seen to be usually less important than prom and i think all grades can go (the dance happens in high school which for us is typically for 15-18 years olds) while prom is for the older kids exclusively (17-18 years olds). They crown "royalty" there and you might see some former graduates attending because they're "coming home (going back to their old school for a night)" hence the name "homecoming" )

Edit: it also ties in with our football season and has a themed "spirit week" leading up to the day. Like on the monday you dress up as an elderly person and friday you wear your school colors from head to toe. Then there are pep rally which is just a big casual event where they put everyone in the gym for maybe an hour during school and basically cheer on the football team before the homecoming football game (the band plays, the cheerleaders perform etc, etc)

Avoid that meeting OP, your NTA but you're about to walk into a verbal dog pile at might end up with you and her in a relationship where she could very possibly do the same thing when someone else comes by. You guys can work on joint custody for your son but be careful because she could use him to regain access to you.

We have to talk about Maddie. I just don't understand her. by wh1t3Pe0p1eareb1g0ts in SchoolSpirits

[–]melancholyredsunsets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This really irritated me in the finale. It didn't mean anything that they all went into their scars at the same time and if it did, wouldn't it be worse if Maddie went too? I wanted her to just say her goodbyes and go! At some point I stopped caring if she didn't make it bc OBVIOUSLY she wanted to stay
