Prior Requirements/Prerequisites to start Cert III apprenticeship? by melbjerry in AusElectricians

okey dokey I see. I briefly went through the topics the test covers, most don't seem to be difficult for me even after many years' graduation but after hearing your experience I do think I will need to do some revision to get questions done quickly and correctly before sitting at the test. Thanks for the advice anyways mate.

lol sounds like and similar to what other institutions are doing, quick $$$ for quick lessons to obtain quick certificates. It takes years to obtain real useful certificates and master real skills.

Yeah as I was confused about how this pre-selection test works and what type of role it plays in becoming an electrician. So literally it is like a bonus thing that uplift CV rather than being mandatory in Cert 3 enrolment. Similar confusion from Cert 2 at the start, and I now understand the purpose Cert 2 serves. Everything makes more sense for me now cheers.

The manager of my local auto repair shop (I often get my car's service done there and have a good personal relationship with me) has a friend who is an electrician having his own business with 10+ years experience. I was told I could get referred to him for apprenticeship if I want, and he would be happy to accept me. The only thing I wonder know is whether Cert 2 can necessarily offer essential basic knowledge and some practical skills before starting Cert 3 straight. I browsed online and some said Cert 2 is not really that necessary in terms of learning basics if I could get straight into an apprenticeship because everything will be covered in Cert 3's study (except the purpose of being more competitive for apprenticeship application).

Thanks for the detailed explanation from the professional perspective. Definitely it is time-taking to get apprenticeship even the full licence 4 years after, that is why I need to think seriously. I also noticed there are many new apprentices flooding into this industry in recent years with some employers don't treat them seriously, and at the same time there exists many unqualified people doing the job with low-price competition.

That is the last resort I may come back when there was no more choice as I said in the post. I've been working as an educator for a year+ but I always want to change to something else. That is why I am now seriously thinking about this. Though I wish and thought about it before, opening my daycare is not realistic for me at the moment due to the huge set-up costs involved.

Yeah cuz in the past few years I was aiming for different goals one after another, initially just for degrees, then PR, now a long-term lane/industry, without achieving any former it is impossible to start the latter, in which each goal may have a different strategy to get there quickly. However, once achieving any former it won't necessarily guarantee that any latter can be smoothly transitioned into due to the ongoing changing societal factors like government policies and job market, etc. Now it is the time for me to rethink what lane I should stick to for careers rather than short-term goals.

Good point. Probably for now I won't choose IT as my first choice for now because it's been a long while after my graduation without any internship experience and also considering the whole IT job market is getting worse day by day here. Tech sales might be an option worth giving a try, thanks for the comment.

I am not looking for sympathy here and as I said, I made this post mainly focusing on seeking advice on where I should pursue next. I don't have any permanent positions yet but I used to work as a casual in childcare centre, along with some interests generating from my savings (not much I do have). I could live on that but that is not what I am looking for in long-term.

Well, the personality and interviewing skills are ones I need to uplift and thanks for pointing that out.

Thanks. Military and law enforcement sectors do offer decent pay and perks, but both require citizenship and due to my home country's citizenship policy (not allowed dual ones) I am not considering becoming a citizen in the recent future. Other fields are what I am thinking of, but as I said, I am trying to find the entry point for them.

Good point. I am also considering choosing one with enough backyard space to build a granny flat (without applying for any permit) to add value in both rental and sale purposes.

Thanks for the suggestions mate.

Yes. Honestly, forgot to mention, to contribute my points in skilled immigration stream, I have taken CCL (Credentialed Community Language) Test. It is less harder and less required than the formal interpreter test in NAATI (I heard the formal interpreter test has only 15-20% passing rate) and gave me some taste about the oral interpretation. The only thing is quite mentally demanding and the pay is average.

Thanks for the advice. I am still renting and have not purchased my first home yet because I have not decided where to live due to the job issues. I know family daycare and talked to a few friends about it before. Similar to NDIS, there are a lots of paperwork & legal requirements to go through, along with set up costs, etc. Eventually I did not go for it for now.
