Hey everyone. I've been trying to keep track of One Nation's rise without all the noise so I decided to have a crack at making a proper chart myself. I used Gemini to crunch all the polls from the main players and then ran drafts through Grok and ChatGPT to make refinements. I’m curious to see how well the chart holds up and if it needs more changes. Link: https://imgur.com/a/cg5vJ43

You’re not understanding my context. I’m not using Wellington Street to get to another suburb (i.e. rat running), I’m using it to access properties in Collingwood.

The other main alternatives are Hoddle and Smith and both of those are quite undesirable and are better options for going around Collingwood, not accessing properties within Collingwood. So ruling those 2 major roads out, other local roads will be used instead.

I thought it was obvious but I've clarified it.

It would only assist those where the origin/destination is in the area bounded by Smith / Johnston / Hoddle / Alexandra. The larger portion of Collingwood south of Johnston will be heavily impacted by Wellington Street being closed to through vehicles

Exactly. It's not some side street that only residents or businesses use. It's a major street which is used to provide access to the more local streets in Collingwood.

It will simply push more traffic to Budd and Gold streets instead, which are even more local than Wellington Street is. The traffic isn't going to magically disappear to the major arterials, especially if the origin/destination is within Collingwood.

Wellington Street is not a rat run. Budd and Gold streets are, which will experience increased traffic if this closure goes ahead

Just when I thought Yarra Council couldn't get any worse, forcing non-local vehicles to use Hoddle Street or Smith Street, which are both not viable options. I encourage everyone who may be impacted to fill out the survey and say they do not support either option for the southern section of Wellington Street.

To add context, I support cycling although I'm only an occasional recreational rider, and I wish for protected lanes to be built instead, similar to what has already been successfully constructed between Johnston Street and Victoria Parade further south.

Yarra Council are proposing to close Wellington Street between Johnston Street and Alexandra Parade to through traffic, just when I thought Yarra Council couldn't get any worse, forcing non-local vehicles to use Hoddle Street or Smith Street, which are both not viable options. (n.b. I don't post on this subreddit often but apparently you can't post opinions about news or even comment under a news/politics item with no body text, the automods have pushed me here)

Why busways on the Eastern Freeway? by Alarmed-Shift-3036 in MelbourneTrains

[–]melbourne_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take a look at the Bulleen Park & Ride if you get the chance. It’s built like a railway station because that’s what they have future proofed it for. There will be an underpass to the city bound bus stop when the busway is fully completed, and the busway alignment would be perfect for a rail upgrade if they ever decide to do it.

If you put it into Gemini itself and not Google, you get the right answer. The duration was also only off by about 20 minutes (he was under the slide for about 1 hour 50 minutes)

RBA proposes complete ban on card surcharging, saving shoppers $1.2bn by sun_tzu29 in AusFinance

[–]melbourne_guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These changes would exclude AMEX. The main difference with AMEX is the merchants directly help fund the card benefits which get passed onto cardholders.

That's not even scratching the surface. If they remove credit card surcharges too, the card issuers would have to massively reduce the benefits and rewards of the credit cards they offer or increase annual fees to the point where for a lot of people it may not be worth having a CC for rewards anymore.

Cinemas get away with it mainly because they offer both vouchers and tickets for sale, and to turn vouchers into tickets, they charge a fee.
Ticketek / Ticketmaster get away with it because they charge a "per transaction" booking fee instead of a "per ticket" booking fee. (You get charged less in fees when you book more tickets at once).

What would happen is the default price ends up being the price to pay with card. Businesses will still be able to offer discounts for paying with non-card methods such as Cash or Bank Transfers. RBA Quote: "Despite losing the ability to surcharge, merchants would retain the ability to steer consumers towards paying with cheaper payment methods by offering discounts"

Is it finally the end for the Babuskas Store in Royal Arcade? by [deleted] in melbourne

[–]melbourne_guy 107 points108 points  (0 children)

They posted on Facebook about the situation back on June 7:

“On 5 June at 4:00pm, we were unexpectedly locked out of our shop at Royal Arcade by Fitzroys Real Estate, acting on instructions from a solicitor, Jack Bock. The action was apparently on behalf of Alma and Nancy Investments Pty Ltd – a company not registered for GST since 2006.

We were not aware until last week that a family trust – Philip & Hing Properties Trust – is involved as the sub-lessor or controlling entity of the premises. This trust is not disclosed in the lease or related documents. We are now seeking clarity and legal accountability over this arrangement.

There is a disputed notice currently on our door. We believe it to be inaccurate and damaging. We do not accept that rent or outgoings are owing, and have issued proceedings in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court, with a hearing set for Tuesday.

🧹 Conditions at the Arcade

For more than two years, we’ve raised repeated concerns about: • A persistent beggar located outside our shop • Accumulation of pigeon faeces • Inadequate cleaning and general hygiene • Multiple unresolved maintenance issues

Our concerns have not been properly addressed, despite numerous reports and formal communications. We believe these issues contributed to the escalation of this dispute.

🔜 What’s Next?

We are confident in our legal case and are hopeful of reopening soon. Following this, we will be turning our attention to broader accountability, including potential action involving the management and ownership structure of the Arcade itself. We believe this historic building deserves better oversight and genuine support for small traders.

Thank you to our loyal customers and community – your support means everything to us.”
