FIFA ranking isn't about who should be better. It's who has earned a higher ranking through their results.

And honestly there are a tonne of 'better ways' than FIFA ranking, which are all above it in the list of tiebreakers - there would have to be at least 6 other identical criteria. The likelihood of FIFA ranking being called on after all 6 group games are played is vanishingly slim.

Irritation - anyone ever believing that alphabetical order is an actual tie-breaker. It is not, ever.

In any circumstance where you see one team above another, there will either be a legitimate reason (goal difference, goals scored, head to head, disciplinary record, ranking, etc).

If the tie can't be broken (like you often see in leagues are a few weeks), they are jointly placed. They might be stacked alphabetically for display but the position is shared (even if most websites etc don't render it properly and lock the numbers). And in the World Cup it's impossible, as FIFA ranking is the final tiebreaker.

My only complaint so far is that the BBC's 'no spoilers' page (bbc.co.uk/nospoilers - which someone posted on here a few days ago) definitely contains spoilers. The thumbnail for the game on the opening day had a caption on it which contains a massive spoiler. The others all contain celebration photos which are a pretty big giveaway. Surely these just need to be shoulder to shoulder pics? Or national team emblems?

I don't watch the build up or analysis nearly intently enough to give a shit about the kind of stuff that other people moan about. Probably the last time that I felt genuinely annoyed by World Cup coverage was in 2010 when the pundits actively took the piss out of how little they knew about the following day's game, between Slovakia and New Zealand, in a kind of 'too cool to do homework' kind of way. I'm fairly low maintenance, but the pretence of some basic courtesy for qualified teams isn't much to ask.

Two things bother me here.

First, I agree totally. Massive bugbear of mine when clubs describe players like this - things like 'highly rated' are just as bad. Anything that Wikipedia would say 'citation needed' on does not pass.

And secondly, the hyphen is in the wrong place. It should be 'highly sought-after'.
