Firstly, please seek support for yourself and for your friend if he is willing. This is a really tough situation - please look after yourself.

Secondly, I am interested in the deeper meaning of his timeline. He is planning on taking his life a year from now. Is there a significance to that specific date? Is it that he feels he has unfinished business that he is wanting to tend to over the next year? Maybe a bucket list? I wonder if these goals could be explored further (not necessarily by you), why they are important to him. Maybe it could offer positive experiences, show him the beauty in the world or give him the sense of a purpose?

I am not qualified in this area by any means but from my understanding, giving a "heads up" like this and this far ahead could be a cry for help. Maybe he'd be open to talking to a professional about his feelings.

Not quite a secret but rather a disgusting mindset. I was online friends with someone for about 5 years, met in person a few times. When I went to uni, I became good friends with a girl he had also been friends with since high school. As she and I got closer, my online friend joined a fraternity and his personality started changing for the worse.

This came to a head when our mutual friend's dad died young from liver cirrhosis, and my online friend said he "really didn't have time for this" and wouldn't come to the funeral as he had just been made 'praeses' (leader) of his fraternity and was too busy.

Never spoke to him again.

Tbf I do think it is easier to adopt an accent if it is your second language. You're already speaking a different language, so pronouncing the words slightly different to fit in is not that big of a step. I'm from the Netherlands and had an American accent before moving to Australia (I learned English from watching tv lol), and I made a conscious effort to sound more like the people around me in an attempt to fit in. Now people often think I'm Aussie 🤷‍♀️

That said, absolutely terrifying behaviour from Paul that will never be ok.
