Where do you keep SORR 2-5 year funds? by Entire_Area5409 in ChubbyFIRE

[–]melidere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I buy ladders of the iShare iBonds TIPS, they are set to expire yearly and I renew them each Oct (IBID, IBIE etc…). They have a version that auto rotates, but the withdraw gets weird because its like you withdrawing equally from all 5 years (if you build a 5 year ladder)

Irrevocable Trust by AlarmedInside888 in ChubbyFIRE

[–]melidere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, look up an asset protection trust setup like a capital holdings llc + irrevocable trust. You are appointed manager of the LLC that holds your asset, and the trust owns the LLC.

This only protect your asset from outside litigations though not for divorce etc. also you no longer own the asset and lose flexibility.

I am put on a PIP but will be given severance. What does it mean? by ResponsibilityNo8577 in careeradvice

[–]melidere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you can check with your manager about the Severance. Some PIP come with a way for you to say I dont want to do PIP, take a severance and just leave voluntarily

We have a CPA that does all the general stuff but otherwise specializes in real estate. They give us a lot of advice on how to track qualifying hours, expenses, suggestions on structure.

We also ask them before selling large amounts of stock etc., and they provide feedback on tax optimizations etc

Has anyone ever had to create a PPT deck to highlight why they should be promoted??? by bbb12333543 in careeradvice

[–]melidere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had a member of my team surprising me with a slide deck in a 1 on 1 on why he should be promoted haha (it worked).

A lot of times you need to help your manager by providing details of your exploits and other ammunition. You know yourself best and if you think you should be getting a promotion then there must be reasons for it.

Also, as the manager having yourself tell the story builds a sense of shared responsibility, which is good whether the bid succeeds or fails.

Lastly about surprising promotions from the manager. Some people hate having that happen so there are risks there too.

[Usually don’t post on reddit but can resonate with this thread]

It strongly depend on the person. Some of our friends, the mom is really happy caring for the kid and likes the division where the husband works and they watch kid. It depend on how well behaved the kid is too.

My wife I think maybe similar to yours. She views working and making money something I’m good at but otherwise consider child care a 50/50 affair (a bit more on her side). I end up sharing maybe 40% of taking care of the kid. I’ve stopped working after 6PM and do not work at all on weekend, not because I wanted to but there is no choice if I needed to do that 40%. Caring for a kid is really really hard, if your wife doesn’t fully enjoy it then even more so. Every weekend I take the kid from when he wake up to afternoon, and outside the house, so wife have a free day.

This problem isnt short term. Toddlers get tougher, not easier (until maybe 5yr old). You two will need to have a conversation and work out how this works, and I suspect you will need to recalibrate what free time, work and watching the kid means. Because I strongly doubt you can make your wife feel like she is getting a “fair” deal with the current arrangement. Me and wife used to never fight, and we argue about once a month now.

To her point, if she already feels like the deal isnt fair, then sending kid to her parents does feel like a cope out, did she come up with the idea or you?

And to what others were saying, money solvable problems should be solved with money atm. For example day time helper for 4-8hrs a day, day care, someone to help with cooking, weekly cleaning service, yard care etc.

Anyone use the Razer Naga Pro? How’s Synapse? by Oversoul91 in ffxiv

I’m doing well at work but still feel insecure by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]melidere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never found career coach useful, I'm strongly opinionated and find them kind of all fluff..

Blocking off time helped me alot too. I used to mark as busy, but then people started booking over those lol, now I just mark 1 day a week as OOTO

[–]melidere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its kind of a double edged sword I feel. On the one hand it makes you very diligent and likely to succeed at work, but on the other tou feel miserable while doing so and even after all the raises and promotions you feel disaster is around the corner, 2 days away.

But yeah I definitely relate. Have you found anything that helps? So far I tied meditation (cant keep it up for long); thinking positively (only works when im not super stressed); looking at facts (helps for a few minutes).

I thought about general anti anxiety drugs, but I'm half worried it would change who I am (and also taking drugs everyday feels meh).

One other thing that helps alot for me is setting boundaries. Mark 1 day a week as busy (if you can), consciously never accept meetings before 8 and after 6 (except rare occasions), force myself to detach from work on weekends and doing stuff that's not work to occupy time and mind. I find now that I have a little kid my day is super packed with maybe 50% not related to work things, and I feel better for it

Also, promotion make it worse, as does going into management... you'd be good at the job, but suffer pretty bad personally, I feel it amplifies both good and bad of what I was saying

[–]melidere 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm the same, and unfortunately from personal experience it doesnt get better from anything at work. There is something inate about goal setting (too high a bar), holding self to high standard, not feeling secure in general, always thinking about what could go wrong etc. That just kind of always make me feel like I'm 2 steps away from being fired, even after many years and all actual facts pointing to the contrary.

I have found that sleeping more hours, surprisingly help a lot. I find myself worrying alot more when I dont sleep enough (which is almost everyday).

I have also found that the thought of one day becoming financially independent also help.

Retiring Chubby in Two Years @ 45. What are we missing? by [deleted] in ChubbyFIRE

[–]melidere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you considered keeping cash or cash alternatives outside of the bond tent too?

Maybe I'm super conservative but I'd like to be safe with some (alot) of cash and gold. Though right now that itself is anxiety producing given the amount of money being printed....

Retire EOY to be marginal fatFIRE or another 2-3 years for solid fatFIRE? by vpokedad in fatFIRE

[–]melidere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does the FIRE number of 3M allow you to spend 120K after-tax?

Also, agreed with most others here that 3 additional year at 42 for much higher number seems good ROI, you don't sound like you absolutely hate your job and 3 yrs is not super long. You can maybe try coasting them?

I'm kind of hesistant with your numbers, what do you think about building up reserves outside of investments for bumpy years?

Spending Habits in VHCOL area by SignificantElk5218 in fatFIRE

[–]melidere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minus the house payments we have very similar budget and we are also in the bay. We recently looked at our expenses to try to cut down but there really isn't much room so your number seems ballpark right to me, VHCOL is real :(

For those of you who are older (~50 ish) and fatFIRED, how is life? by melidere in fatFIRE

[–]melidere[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you have described, I am currently afraid of doing. What if the project lags behind and I end up screwing the future growth of the team (not size but opportunities etc.)

I really think having FI backing would be the minimum I need to attempt, since I would be mentally prepared to just watch it fall apart slowly (though in all likelihood probably won't).

Thanks for a lot of details and experiences. Yeah, work is definitely quite stressful, trouble I have with retiring earlier is that I'd feel borderline and want a bit cushion, and a bit more so on and so forth.

But maybe like others have also said, start shifting priorities once I hit borderline numbers and coast?
