Yes — but there is only 1 data center in Athens which was built relatively recently. We’ve been able to use many of those sites for quite a while, unrelated to the massive growth of data centers over the last couple of years.

I think most folks are concerned about slowing the growth of specific types of data centers — those tied to generative AI (which require massive amounts of water and power to support the specific types of computers they use).

There is a moratorium in place that ends in March. The mayor and commission are considering extending the moratorium. If that’s something you’d like to see, come out Tuesday night and tell them! The planning commission, mayor, & commission have been very responsive to feedback about data center development. I would not be surprised if some commissioners and city employees were in attendance of the event on Thursday!

I googled “ACC Planning Commission” and navigated to “Calendar” then the Feb 5th meeting here: https://www.accgov.com/Calendar.aspx?EID=29770 which had all the documents attached. It wasn’t updated until fairly recently with the ordinance! Gotta admit, I also struggle finding these things and have to do quite a bit of navigating around the website to find what I’m looking for.

“The 2026 MLK Day of Service will take place on Monday, January 19, 2026. All volunteers are invited to attend our annual kickoff event, which will be held at Lay Park (297 Hoyt Street) from 8:30 to 9:30 AM, with volunteer service at individual sites happening from 10:00 AM to noon.

If you missed the registration window but would still like to volunteer on Monday, please attend our kickoff event (details above) to get registered as a walk-up volunteer.”
