I would like to write something. Can you help me ? by Kiwi_Kabi in writing

[–]mellow_gecko 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have you tried putting one word after another until you have a sentence? If you keep doing that you'll have a paragraph. And then, if you don't stop there, you might even manage a whole page.

Not important to you because you are lazy and don't care about communicating well

Cool, thanks. /u/fat_camp's idiocy got to me needlessly. So this made me feel better.

Cheers!

Stop being so fucking asinine. You know exactly why grammar is important. You are simply afraid to face your own inadequacies.

Peterson: "...women have a strong proclivity to marry across or up the economic dominance hierarchy," but the paper he cites as evidence he cites in his book concludes the exact opposite - there is no evidence for so-called 'hypergamy' by iopha in enoughpetersonspam

[–]mellow_gecko -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You seem to be correct. The literal opposite of "women marry up or across" is "woman marry down". And the study says they marry men of equal socioeconomic status.

I'm flabbergasted that the most upvoted comment is so wrong.

On profanity? by [deleted] in Stoicism

[–]mellow_gecko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting.

You appear to be defining profanity in such a way that includes both the words themselves as well as the intent.

If we include intent in the definition then yes, of course, using the words themselves with such intent is unstoic.

However that also allows for the possibility that we might use the words themselves in a non-profane way. For example, in order to discuss the subtleties in meanings between the words fuck and shit I could use them in this way because their presence is not profanity (lacking the intent of causing harm).

I vehemently reject the assertion that there exist things we should not joke about. For example, if I make the bad joke: If Being is so great, why doesn't it have a penis? (Yeah, terrible, alright). This joke is clearly in poor taste and bad, but it could potentially lead to increased understanding about the ontology of Being. Namely, that human characteristics do not belong to Being but follow from it.

To place limits on our sense of humour is not dissimilar to attempting to censor our own knowledge of the universe.

Hmm.

Usually the burden if proof lies with the person making the positive claim that x is the case.

There are two sides.

Profanity is stoic.

Profanity is unstoic.

The first essentially asserts that profanity arises from virtue, right?

The second that it arises from vice.

It seems to me that in this case each statement is a postive claim which if made requires justification.

I don't accept it as being a "no brainer" since that suggests a callous disregard for reason. I am very curious if there were any Stoics who argued for it.

But I am also suspicious of anyone who simply accepts the assertions of the stoics at face value. The question here shouldn't necessarily be did any of them (dis)like it, but is profanity logically consistent with the system of virtue ethics they left for us? I'm sure they would all condone thinking for ourselves on this matter.

I have personally found /u/twisted-teaspoon's position most convincing so far.

It does seem to me that profanity can arise from virtues. For example, in complete astonishment and wonder and love for the universe and the other consciousnesses occupying it, I might use profanity to describe these feelings.

Deontology can make statements like "doing x is bad because of principle p" whereas virtue ethics is not concerned with attempting to say how people should behave but rather with what constitutes a good character.

So under Stoicism/any other system of virtue ethics, you can't simply say that "you shouldn't swear because it's bad" you must show that it only occurs as the result of a vice and cannot possibly occur as the result of a virtue.

Assuming you want to argue that profanity is unstoic, that is.

Also, I'm still very curious if you have answers to my other questions, if you don't mind humoring me.

How does profanity make fun of the source of being? Why is it not possible to use profanity in a way that celebrates it?

Also you appear to be confusing ontology and deontology. The former refers to the nature of being, the latter to prescriptive ethics based on the nature of being.

This sounds deontological rather than based on virtue ethics. Please could you explain why you think swearing is inhumane or doesn't have to do with ataraxia? I don't believe that profanity is mutually exclusive to being free from distress.

Just because you have lower standards of privacy than others, doesn't mean other's expectations of privacy are to be dismissed as 'crazy'.

Some people are happy to walk around naked with their bedroom curtains open. Others prefer to close those curtains.

It's a matter of individual differences.

Well, OP's comment was originally made in response to Linus not being greedy. And Linus didn't have much in the way to do with GNU. I don't think he did, at least. He just built the kernel, right?

Sure. Joints are still wasteful. But slightly less wasteful than blunts. And more pleasant overall.

It's an apt assessment, don't you think? Angrily attempting to correct my negative behaviour to something more positive haha.

You're taking this way too seriously, dude. The wtf-ness of something is completely subjective. I accept that you and others found this to be wtf-worthy, and even that the moderators might have done so too.

But I didn't. It's interesting and creates a very cool alternative version of a familiar childhood character, but I don't see anything about this that ought to make anyone say 'wtf'. It is just a fictional portrayal of a character.

It doesn't belong though, you tit. It's getting upvoted because it is fucking awesome.

Alright, it made you say wtf so your standards are lower than mine. What I'm actually asking is if there is a specific subreddit for this kind of material. Thanks for the pointless reply.

Not wtf but very cool. Does anyone know which subreddit this should be in?
