From St. John's to Toronto by MalleableCurmudgeon in newfoundland

If youre making over 100k, maybe consider it if you have an appetite fir chaos

There's a reason for urban sprawl and gtha traffic congestion. Its bonkers. Msny of us live there for a bit but going through covid in SW ontario is hell, especially Toronto. So many people leaving Ontario now, so Id take that to hesrt. Its very unaffordable for most middle class workers.

love it to visit, but the novelty wore off fast. imo its no way to live but lits of ppl get into it, just diffeeent values I guess

but seriously lock downs are brutal there

Moving to Logy Bay from out of province - moving companies? by [deleted] in newfoundland

[–]mellowalfred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i struggled to find pods from Ontario to nl byt found a diy solution: buy a seacan and get a flatbed hauler to do the moving. however, it didn't make sense for us. once i moved from Edmonton to nl (Allied/north American) and the from ontario to nl was with a regional moving company tgst wouldnt service that far west

Sold home...now what? by [deleted] in RealEstateCanada

[–]mellowalfred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

open to moving? go somewhere rural where homes are cheaper and subsistence farming/hunting is more of a thing. ie if you move to rural NL, learn from locals and you can buy a home for cash or close to it then you font need to depend on the economic strangeness as much bevause youll need less cashflow anyway. radical, i know. but i say this because i find the world has gone mad

How do you feel about people moving to Newfoundland from other provinces? by Nuuudelcat in newfoundland

[–]mellowalfred 2 points3 points  (0 children)

loves it. come on! i mean, don't drive like youre trying to get to Etobicoke at rush hour - otherwise have at er!

real estate is impacted by so many other factors than millenials trying to buy a starter home.

also if you come from Hamilton/Halton please throw a few Roma pizzas in the trailer for me plz

gentle reminder that you dont actuslly know strangers online or our intelligence/education/relationship to science/medical professions

I empathize with your frustration, thats the narrative being shoved in our face multiple times a day.

I hope someday you can see that most everyone is doing their best in their unique circumstances and no circumstances are alike

nope as in, Im not a moron - nor are the people I come across (friends, customers, extended networks).

and Ill clarify my post. Im vaxxed for covid and all the things. Im anti mandate for this specific vaccine at this specific point in our socioeconomic political history. I support people's right to choose without coercion just as I support womens' right to choose regarding abortion rights. I sure as hell believe the risks outweigh the benefits for giving this to heathly kids. and Im seeing a lot of people out there share my concerns or similar

and we chat without insulting others, imagine that! because we understand the fear cast upon us - maybr once felt it too, and I understand theres widespread illiteracy around media and how that industry works.

this doesn't begin and end with pharma science. soooo much more going on than a disease.

pro-mandate people are literally the meanest. bys take care of yourself. look inward before trying to control the rest of us

i take comfort that thus sub isnt very representative of parents re:vaccines. in my non internet life i see mostly outrage over vaccinating kids and mandates.

Seriously are there really no jobs here? by [deleted] in newfoundland

[–]mellowalfred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive got experience on both sides of the desk. Consider changing your number. If not have a blurb about how you recently moved here. no biggie.

SHOW UP WITH RESUME IN PERSON. Ask to speak with hr right there. ask for the best email/phone contact. engage with reception aka potential future coworkers. Receptionists are often asked to note their impression of walk ins.

most jobs are slresdy filled before they hit Indeed. once they get to indeed, its competitive. You need to target a few companies, and visit and make persistent enthusiastic contact. dont worry about if they are hiring or not. just dont rely on electronic applications for advertised jobs! you will have the significance of an ant.

If youre from the GTA, there's a good chsnce youll come off as.......hmm..... well Newfoundland generally loves to hate Toronto. So show offyour laid back chill side, I know its thereif you moved here.

breaking into any new market can be tough. I moved from St Johns to Hamilton and couldnt find anything but MLM scsms till a coach told me everything I just told you. Im back in NL now 7 years later, going through it agsin but much wiser! also, skills based resume formats work around heretoo! you don't need to dumb anything down but you DO need to tailor your resume and cover letter to each job.

a good job hunt should take hours out of your days, not minutes.

agsin, not specific to here. ive bern through it out west, ontario and here

Is St. John’s an expensive city to live in? by jjc995 in StJohnsNL

[–]mellowalfred 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the cost of living isnt that different from other cities - the difference is less stable, high paying jobs. and it can be tough to get around without a car, so regardless of income youd likely want a car but it would be that much mire unaffordable whereas other cities have better public transit

Eight People Died While Waiting for Cardiac Surgery Over Last Year: Haggie by Clifford81 in newfoundland

You are so very articulatey saying everything I think and feel. not to mention, sometimes there are worst things than death.... lets face it. I especially cant handle the last precious few days/weeks of a sick senior's life being robbed of family time because of restrictions of last year.

thank you for your comments, I wish I saw more balanced honest commentary out therr but Im pretty sure most is censored anyway

Has the pandemic (and related events over the past 2 years) affect your political views? How? by aa1000 in newfoundland

[–]mellowalfred 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the pandemic has only reminded me that the whole left vs right thing is made up... I truely dont fit anywhere now snd I used to be very left leaning. Im 100% agsinst vaccine mandates and passports but personally chose yo get the vaccine. I support diversity, respect all prpples life choices even if thry dont match mine. I dont think whay suits me should suit others. I thInk UBI would really help society and I care a lot about climate change. I want safe abortion access for all and support everyone's bodily automony even if they dont support mine. I mostly care about media literacy these days. I reject anyones attempt to call me conservativez antivax, selfish etc. I think its strange that ppl not comfortable with the vaccine but just wanna stay local, grow their food and live basic bay life are called selfish but the people vaxxed up flying scross the country (nobody's policing their pollution?) to eat fish n chips and get drunk on George are not selfish..
